OpenSUSE Network :: Manually Changing DNS Settings?

Jan 8, 2011

once upon a time i manually entered my ISP's DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf Now i have changed ISP, my old DNS setting are still present even though i have edited my resolv.conf file to my new ISP's DNS servers. Internet still works fine, i just want to use my new ISP's DNS as my old ISP will be closing its doors very soon. Am i doing something wrong, or better put.forgot to edit another file..? I did do this a while ago, so i apologise in advance for my incompetence. I'm stilling running 11.1 / Router has DHCP configured. my resolv.conf file is below

Code:
cat /etc/resolv.conf
### /etc/resolv.conf file autogenerated by netconfig!
#
# Before you change this file manually, consider to define the
# static DNS configuration using the following variables in the
# /etc/sysconfig/network/config file:
# NETCONFIG_DNS_STATIC_SEARCHLIST

Fedora Networking :: Manually Configuring The Network Settings?

Mar 12, 2009

Does anyone havea good tutorial on Fedora's network scripts, how to edit them, in what order they are called, etc. What I want to do seems simple, but something in the bootup keeps changing it. Right now, I have an image of Fedora Core 7 created in a server with 2 Ethernet cards. I need to specify static IP addresses for each card. Thats simple, and I did that. Now, heres the tricky part, I need to be able to clone this image and place it onto other exact duplicates of the hardware, and have all of the settings stay the same.

What happens here, is that eth0 and eth1 are stored somewhere as devices, and upon boot on a different machine, the Fedora will mount new network cards(different MAC addresses) as eth1 and eth2. It then mvoes my ifcfg-eth0/1 to a backup, and creates two brand new network setting's files, which initialize to DHCP. This creates an issue, becuase these machines do not have monitors nor keyboards attached, nor is their a DHCP server, so its a pain when I swap the machine out, to have to go in with a keyboard/mouse/monitor and reconfigure the network settings before I can connect to it over the LAN.

So does anyone have any advice on how to do this? No matter what i tried, booting the image in a new PC caused Fedora to create two new devices and create brand new network settigns for them, both initialized to DHCP. Hell, I wouldn't care if it created brand new devices, if it would initialize them to static IP addresses that I am expecting.

Slackware :: Changing Network Settings In Slack 12.1?

Sep 9, 2010

I got a Slackware 12.1 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop which is a multi boot system along with Vista and Ubuntu Hardy. I tried using Slackware after several months. The last time I used Slackware, I was at university where the Network settings were Manual - Static IP, Gateway, DNS all specified according to location (dorm room). I moved out of univ and now have a network connection with DHCP. Basically I connect to a server, login with the info the service provider has given me.

Problem is I can't change the Network settings through Control Center in KDE. It just doesn't register any changes even if I reboot. Through Konsole and as root, I could change the settings using netconfig. But then I need a reboot to register the changes. Why is this so? Anyway to avoid a reboot? In my Ubuntu Hardy, there is no need for a reboot when I change the settings. Thats quite convenient.

OpenSUSE Network :: No DNS Caching Until Manually Restart Dnsmasq?

May 29, 2010

My upstream DNS server is a bit slow, so I've installed the dnsmasq cacher locally. I have the service starting on runlevels 2, 3, and 5. But I can tell by Firefox's behavior that dnsmasq does not work upon boot. Firefox lets its own DNS cache expire after 60 seconds. When I do my second Google search five minutes after my first, the second DNS lookup for www.google.com is just as slow as the first. If I manually restart the dnsmasq service, I get the fast name resolutions I expect.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 With LXDE: Manually Defined Ports Are Not Getting Through The Firewall?

Sep 21, 2010

I'm using opensuse 11.3 32bit with LXDE. I have configured an apache tomcat server listening on port 8080. Yast was used to open udp 8080 and tcp 8080 in the firewall by manual entry under the advanced button of 'allowed services' menu.Another system was used to access the tomcat server via a firefox webbrowser. The attempt was unsuccessful. The url used was [URL]. firefox webbrowser keeps showing'connecting ...' until timeout. I'm assuming that inspite of the specified port openings in the firewall, it is somehow ignored. If I were to disable the firewall, then I can access the tomcat server with the firefox webbrowser.

OpenSUSE Network :: No Network Connection After Firwall Settings Changed / Get It To Work?

Nov 17, 2010

I deleted the firewall files "K09SuSEfirewall2_init", "K01SuSEfirewall2_setup", "S11SuSEfirewall2_setup" and "S01SuSEfirewall2_init" from "/etc/rc.d/rc5.d" in order to disable the firewall when rebooting.

As a consequence all network services are not working. I can't connect to any other machine nor to the internet.

I rebuilt the symbolic files based on the ones for runlevel 3, but still no network services are available.

Any suggestions how to make it work again? I'm using Suse 11.3.

OpenSUSE Network :: Two Network Cards With Different Settings For Internet Access

Feb 9, 2010

I have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.

Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Assigned IPV4 Settings Manually - No Internet Connectivity

Jun 20, 2011

I am new to UBUNTU. I installed the latest one alongside windows 7. I am having problem with the internet connectivity. I configured the static ip settings right I guess. Edited the Auto eth1 and assigned ipv4 settings manually and entered everything correctly.

Address 192.168.xx.xx
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.xx.xxx
DNS Server xxx.xxx.xx.x, xxx.xxx.xx.x

Do I have to put MAC Address as well? Which is addressed as 'Network address' in Windows where I put this MAC. I have on board Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) Network adapter. Do I have to install the driver?

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.4 Subversion Proxy Settings ?

Sep 16, 2011

I installed openSuse 11.4 (KDE). It was excellent - everything was working great except for Subversion which use to work fine on 11.3 (command line is broken on 11.4, Eclipse/Subclipse works fine on both).

Subversion kept going to the proxy server instead of going directly to our internal Subversion server. I tried (1.) setting the proxy settings in Yast with excluding for our Subversion server, (2.) tried adding the usual settings in ~/.subversion/servers (which worked fine in 11.3). I could not check out on the command line from the local server, I can check out from external servers, eg: Google.

(I installed from the live CD download. I think this is using something some plasma widget thing for the network management.) Why is Subversion not using the usual ~/.subversion/servers file for its settings in 11.4 (KDE)? What is it using and how can I make it not use the proxy server? (Someone else mentioned his Subversion only started working after he used some Chrome plug-in to change the proxy settings but had no idea why?)
