OpenSUSE Network :: Changing Hostname Via DHCP?
Jan 29, 2011I cannot uncheck the "Change Hostname via DHCP" box because it is disabled. Next to it says "No interface with dhcp". How can I fix it? I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3/KDE4

OpenSUSE :: Hostname Keeps Changing On Reboot?
Apr 14, 2011This isn't really a problem or an issue but I'm kinda curious about it. I thought openSUSE generate a hostname like "linux-xxxx" when you install it and that was it. But for me it generates a new host name every time I turn on my computer. For example, right now it's "oseiler-linux" yesterday it was "mac-sophia". I'm wondering how it generates these kinds of hostnames.

Jun 13, 2010I setup the hostname for my linux machine to Linux. If I try ping Linux from the same computer it works. If I try from another computer inside my network the host can not be resolved. If I ping the IP from another computer it works.
I take a look in my router at DHCP client list and my linux machine doesn't have the Hostname set up.
How to broadcast the hostname to the entire network?

I only notice the way to change it is in yast2 -> network devices -> network settings -> Hostnames. I am looking for where it is stored because I want to write a script to update it (apart of a server deployment process).

OpenSUSE Network :: Using As A Network Gateway - Renew DHCP Lease
Jul 15, 2010Why trying to avoid ranting about my Linksys router, I'll try and keep things short. I have a Linksys router in which the default firmware was terrible and would not correctly renew its DHCP lease. After getting feed up with that I flashed dd-wrt on the router and now it works better but randomly DNS queries would stop being resolved. To rule out the chances that it is my ISPs DNS servers I switched my DNS to openDNS, same problem happens (although I have to admit openDNS is a lot better than what my ISP has).
Anyways I'm about feed up with it and about an inch away from drop kicking the thing out my window. To avoid that I figured I will give it one more change and instead of using my Linksys as my network gateway I'll move all of that to my home server, and make the Linksys just an wireless AP. Besides setting up DHCP, DNS, and iptables on the server is there anything else I will need to know and setup on the server to make this work?
Side note anyone using openSUSE for DHCP know if setting up reserved IPs for certain MAC address is possible?

Nov 17, 2010Just completed a fresh netinstall of OpenSUSE. This machine previously had a Ubuntu install on it, but I was having all sorts of issues and decided I required a fresh start. The install itself went acceptably, although I ended up manually fixing GRUB.Now the system is running, I've got a ridiculous problem, in that I'm still seeing the old hostname- It used to be ubuntu-server, but should now be unimatrix-001.Checked both the obvious places (/etc/HOSTNAME & YaST), but the correct hostname is in both of them.

I use opensus 11.3. I used YAST2 for crating my CA and certificates.

Aug 24, 2011I went into Yast and disabled the SYSLOG service, ignoring the warning of which services would be affected, I went ahead anyway and stopped it. Sure enough, a handful of other services stopped as well.Now I have almost recovered the PC from this foolish mistake of mine, the only problem I seem to be stuck with is I am now unable to locate the computer on my LAN by hostname ... does anyone know which service I should restart please (if it helps, the computer can resolve DNS names such as Google.com OK)?

Apr 1, 2011I installed openSUSE on my notebook with an usb drive using openSUSE 11.4 KDE LIVE iso. The installation process set the name to "linux-ygrl" which I don't really like. (I probably just missed the setting during the installation.). I tried to change it through YaST -> Network -> Hostnames and I set everything where needed to the new name and restarted but the changed weren't applied. I searched the web and found out about the /etc/HOSTNAME file which still contains "linux-ygrl". Now I could change it manually but I was wondering if there is a GUI for it? (I mean, openSUSE has for alsmost everything a GUI.

May 14, 2010I just have a simple question. When I installed Lucid a few weeks ago, I didnt feel very inspired, and thus left the host name at default. I just changed the hostname today, and I discovered that I can no longer resolve the host for ssh connections to the computer. When I changed the hostname files, I followed this guide: [URL].. Is there a file that I need to change regarding SSH that has a hostname in it?
Specifically, Im trying to ssh and VNC connect to the Ubuntu box from my iPhone. I have a PuTTY client installed on it (from the app store, called iSSH) and up until now, it worked.

Jan 20, 2011During Slackware 13.1 setup, I chose the hostname stella-sl2. This hostname is also the one that the system is displaying before I configured network access. After configuring wired network access to my Apple Time Capsule, my hostname suddenly changed to INTERFACE='eth0'. As a result I'm noticing some very strange things, like the login prompt which has become "INTERFACE='eth0' login: ".
After configuring wireless network access to the Time Capsule, the hostname changed to "INTERFACE='wlan0'". Note that, during boot, wlan0 is brought up AFTER eth0.
Also strange is this:

Until now, it was only a minor annoyance, it didn't prevent anything from happening, internet connection was not affected. But now I'm configuring sendmail which needs to talk to a relay SMTP server, and sendmail "HELO"'s itself using the bogus hostname:

Probably this is caused by the Time Capsule not adhering to standards. However, the Time Capsule's firmware is the latest version, so I cannot fix this. Is there a way to prevent dhcp from changing the hostname? How can I make sure that the hostname that I configured during setup remains active?

Jul 23, 2010I am new to Ubuntu 10.04 and so far I love it! I recently created a LiveUSB and I am running Ubuntu from my USB drive with preserve mode.
I changed the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files with my new hostname and everytime I reboot those files are going back to original state and change the hostname back to ubuntu...
The rest of my installed applications and settings are preserved... Is there a way to permanently change the host name?

Jun 3, 2010I had 200 workstation with both Windows XP and SuSe Enterprise Linux. Sometime, a few clients can't get IP address from DHCP with SuSe OS. With the same computer, if I reboot and chose Windows XP, it work fine. The log message or the boot message was "No IP Address yet ...backgrounding". I tried to reconfig network device, restart services, change another port, change another line LAN, set static IP Address .... but there's no luck for me.

Fedora Networking :: Changing Hostname Disables Autoconnect?
Feb 13, 2009After installation, I changed the hostname of my computer, using system-config-network. However, after every reboot, it no longer wants to automatically connect to the network. The only way I could fix this was to remove NetworkManager-gnome and install knetworkmanager and use it to create a new connection. There was a flag there to autoconnect.
The other problem is that the hostname never shows on my network. My other PCs all have visible hostnames. One is an Ubuntu box and the other Windows XP. These machines can be pinged by hostname. The Fedora box can only be reached from the other PCs by specifying the numeric IP address.
I've checked the usual places and the hostname is correctly specified. Entering the 'hostname' command returns the correct hostname on the Fedora box. I am running Fedora 10.

During the installation, it has got the IP via DHCP without any problem, and I has downloaded all the needed packets without problems... But when the installation finish.I have no network connection It's strange, because I have IP address, I get the IP from the DHCP server, and I can see the IP addreess if I do "ifconfig", the default route and even the DNS servers in the resolv.conf file; but I cannot ping my gateway (that is the DHCP server as well!!), I cannot ping anything in my network and either anything in internet. I see a network error at the start, but it finally gets the ip address. In the dmesg, the last message repeats over and over. The machine is a Hyper-V virtual machine, but as I said... I worked very well during the installation, I don't know what is going on. I've tried to reinstall, but it doesn't make any difference

I can access the shares from windows if I type the server Ip (ej. \192.168.0.1), however if if write the address (ej. \dbaserver) I cannot access them.If I type ping dbaserver on a command prompt, it returns 127.0.0.2 not 192.168.0.1, what could be wrong. I asume because of this I cannot join the domain also.

Apr 3, 2010I'm maintaining a very modest network at home, with OpenSUSE as OS on the server. I got the DHCP and routing working by following the instructions in the wiki. However, every time I run dhclient on the server/router, it appears my own DHCP server assigns an address to the internal network card despite the fact I specifically assigned it to be static using Yast. The situation resolves itself when I restart the network services with the command /etc/init.d/network restart. Otherwise no problem, but it also seems the internal network card gets a "new" IP from my server every time the external card requests one from the ISP. This is more of an issue.
