Ubuntu :: Manually Setting Display Settings In Gnome?

hen it loads up ubuntu, it automatically detects the settings and resets, but my tv says it can't display the video. I have an old CRT monitor I hook it up to to be able to change settings, but it won't let me change the settings in gnome for the TV. I think the settings it will need to have for the video card hooked up RGB and television would be 1336x768, is there a way that I can program that to where it doesn't automatically detect the monitor?

How would I go about manually making the IP V4 settings? I can view these in System >> administration >> network settings. But there is no way to edit it :S

i was using GDE in my ubuntu system. But yesterday i did some thing so my ubuntu system has changed as debian. My login screen changed and i cant access "system->administration->Login window"when i do this i am getting this error message"GDM (GNOME Display Manager) is not running.You might be using a different display manager, such as KDM (KDE Display Manager), CDE login (dtlogin), or xdm. If you wish to use this feature, then your system will need to be configured to use GDM instead."How to come back to my normal original ubuntu with GNOME.

I'd like to solve a little problem that I have connecting my notebook with an external VGA monitor.Everything seems to work fine, but when I close the laptop monitor, also the external monitor shuts down.I've tried to find different energy-saving setting for laptop display and external monitor. with no luck...My video card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. On the ATI website there is no catalist control center for linux. (It would be very useful). So, for now, I can only use the display options on the panel.

Despite having the Gnome Power Manager set to put the display to seep after 30 minutes, it always happens after 5 minutes. The display will go blank but still lit, and then it powers off after the 30 minutes. Surely, if I set it to 30 minutes, the display should power off then, and not just blank after 5? I have no screensaver packages installed so it's nothing to do with that.

once upon a time i manually entered my ISP's DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf Now i have changed ISP, my old DNS setting are still present even though i have edited my resolv.conf file to my new ISP's DNS servers. Internet still works fine, i just want to use my new ISP's DNS as my old ISP will be closing its doors very soon. Am i doing something wrong, or better put.forgot to edit another file..? I did do this a while ago, so i apologise in advance for my incompetence. I'm stilling running 11.1 / Router has DHCP configured. my resolv.conf file is below

I have a file server that just has some samba shares. What would be some good files to back up off of their for disaster recovery purposes. I already have the smb.conf file from /etc/samba. I'm not familiar with Samba so not sure what else would be useful for if I had to get this reconfigured on another server identically, in a pinch.

I am new to UBUNTU. I installed the latest one alongside windows 7. I am having problem with the internet connectivity. I configured the static ip settings right I guess. Edited the Auto eth1 and assigned ipv4 settings manually and entered everything correctly.
Address 192.168.xx.xx
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.xx.xxx
DNS Server xxx.xxx.xx.x, xxx.xxx.xx.x
Do I have to put MAC Address as well? Which is addressed as 'Network address' in Windows where I put this MAC. I have on board Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) Network adapter. Do I have to install the driver?

Does anyone havea good tutorial on Fedora's network scripts, how to edit them, in what order they are called, etc. What I want to do seems simple, but something in the bootup keeps changing it. Right now, I have an image of Fedora Core 7 created in a server with 2 Ethernet cards. I need to specify static IP addresses for each card. Thats simple, and I did that. Now, heres the tricky part, I need to be able to clone this image and place it onto other exact duplicates of the hardware, and have all of the settings stay the same.
What happens here, is that eth0 and eth1 are stored somewhere as devices, and upon boot on a different machine, the Fedora will mount new network cards(different MAC addresses) as eth1 and eth2. It then mvoes my ifcfg-eth0/1 to a backup, and creates two brand new network setting's files, which initialize to DHCP. This creates an issue, becuase these machines do not have monitors nor keyboards attached, nor is their a DHCP server, so its a pain when I swap the machine out, to have to go in with a keyboard/mouse/monitor and reconfigure the network settings before I can connect to it over the LAN.
So does anyone have any advice on how to do this? No matter what i tried, booting the image in a new PC caused Fedora to create two new devices and create brand new network settigns for them, both initialized to DHCP. Hell, I wouldn't care if it created brand new devices, if it would initialize them to static IP addresses that I am expecting.

I have figured out manually setting the swap partition and setting "/" as the mount point for the primary partition during install. If during install, I want to create another partition to keep the OS separate from installed programs and such, to be able to do a clean install every 6 months and not loose everything (or anything) I have done prior.

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

Well, the problem is that according to the steps that the person who posted the code, I should type this code after executing Terminal before computer boots. and the way to execute Terminal is to have the key: escape holded Well, I do hold the key: escape. but I see no terminal! I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?
Because I have 2 operating systems I get a screen like this (except mine is ubuntu 10.10) If I do it from the recovery mode.... would the code works?

I'm using Xubuntu 8.10, and Xfce 4, which a very clever friend installed for me.
Problem is, my screen display keeps shwoing windows, task bars and icons aligned so far to the left, they go off the screen.

I'd like to do something, but I don't seem to find the solution. Here is my problem: I have a laptop and I plugged in another monitor to it. What I want to do is when UserA logs in, both of the monitor is used, but when UserB logs in, only one of the monitor is used. When I change the display settings it applies to the other user too. My display settings seem to have been corrupted after I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. I can only view my screen in 1280 x 1024 - no other resolutions work. Ubuntu is also not detecting my monitor, a Dell E193FP (19"). In reading some other posts, I see that the first question will be to post my xorg file, which follows.

I'm sure this is a very simple task but I don't have a lot of experience with Linux. I need to view what my display adapters settings are, specifically the refresh rate. I have found plenty on how to change the settings but not how show its current setup. I am troubleshooting an vga splitter/extender issue on a digital signage unit where the master screen syncs up but the remote screen does not, I think it has to do with H-Sync V-Sync or refresh rate.

I have never used Linux always windows so heres the problem the display only has 2 settings 640x480 and a smaller one and it say unknown monitor. I installed the drivers in hardware driver in systems I'm running Ubuntu v 9.10 if that matters and the video card is a Nvida mx440.

Basically I got Windows 7 installed on my laptop and it's been doing nothing but slowing down more and more even though it isn't used for much more than basic internet use and I realized the hard drive was the cause, I did a bunch of stuff to try to fix it that I won't get into here, and in basic I'm to the point I'm just going to reinstall Windows 7, but this time with the help of Ubuntu's partitioning utilities.
I've already had the first ~5GB of the drive overwritten with zero's (thanks to DBAN) and now I'm booted on the Ubuntu LiveCD and trying to learn the command line stuff for formatting a drive. What I want to achieve is use the smallest amount of space possible for the MBR and that's also a point I don't quite understand.
After some research on Google I read that the MBR is on one sector only the very first one, yet the first partition on a hard drive starts anywhere from 63 to 4096. Why are they so far apart? And can I force the partition to be moved closer? I know I know their is pretty much no purpose to this but it bugs me knowing that their might be 31MB (64 512byte sectors minus 1 (MBR) and 64 (beginning of partition)) just going to waste when I could put the NTFS MFT there. Then the second and last part I want to understand is I want to make the NTFS partition have a 512byte allocation unit size and have it lined with the 512sectors on the hard drive so it can have the max performance. Does anyone know how to do this stuff or could find better info than I have on the internet?

I have observer that in the newer distros they dont use xorg.conf anymore and have steered toward xrandr. My question is:
1 - If after an initial install you have no video and you know what hardware you have, how would you use xrandr to configure the machine to boot with the correct resolution and setting? 2 - I also read that you can still use the xorg.conf, would this still be the standard method of setup?

When I plugin a 2nd monitor, the display settings in Configure Desktop allows me to change the display mode to single expanded screen versus duplicate desktop. However, after restart the computer, I have to do that again. I can understand that if I un-plug the 2nd monitor, it should intelligently switch to a single screen mode. But if I don't, it should remember it.
Make the matter worse, if I am in single span screen mode (1 desktop on 2 monitors) and I unplug the monitor while the computer is running, it would not know how to switch back, even in the Display settings of Configure Desktop saying it's in the single monitor mode. This means application and mouse can freely be pushed way over that area of the screen (hidden). I write free software too, and I don't let obvious bugs like this creep into a major distribution like OpenSuse 11.2. It just gives a bad image for OpenSuse and open source in general.

i have debian squeeze installed on an old computer to use as a file/web server. i had an extra monitor laying around and wanted to use it with the server. after about half an hour or so, it turns off and i have to press a key on the keyboard to get it to turn back on. i'm not sure how to keep it from doing this without installing a gui. does anyone know how to do this?
