View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm on opensuse 11.4 (11.3 won't work with my monitor).
My computer gets internet through wireless and I want to share that internet through its ethernet port. So far I've tried using Knetworkmanager to create a network bridge between my wireless and wired connections. I created a new wired connection and shared it using the ip address settings. I was able to get both connections active, but the device hooked up via ethernet had no internet connectivity.
I also tried this command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
but another test resulted in the same fashion (no internet on wired). I believe anything I add to /proc should have an immediate effect, correct?
I had Kubuntu 64-bit installed and decided to try OpenSUSE instead as I was having problems getting the audio to work on Skype. After installing OpenSUSE 11.3 (64-bit), I do not have network connectivity (Ethernet or Wireless)? Neither adapter can be detected? I thought the install would be fairly straightforward as Kubuntu 64-bit detected all the hardware.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI cannot seem to create a tun device using ifconfig, even though the module is loaded, and the node tun is present in /dev/net and appears to have correct access permissions, trying to use nstx which requires the tun device. Only thing I can think of is adding an alias, but not sure where, since there is no /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modules.conf in SUSE 11.3.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have created my own distribution with susestudio.com , based on jeOS template and it works well But I have some problems with network configuration. I make a default configuration with susestudio ( configuration -> General -> network ) and I put for example 172.16.0.185 address. I also put a script which configures IP address with different informations coming from for example a serial port to make my own IP address. This script make the new address and call the ifconfig system program. For example, the script calls "ifconfig eth0 172.16.0.182". And now, I can ping the two addresses, 172.16.0.185 and 172.16.0.182. Is this normal ? I thought the new command "ifconfig eth0 172.16.0.182" would overwrite the old value ( 172.16.0.185 ). It works as this on other distribs ( like ubuntu ) but not on opensuse.
I know that I can have 2 addresses but using the following syntax : "ifconfig eth0:1 A.B.C.D" (if kernel supports aliases ) , and I don't know if it is normally possible to have 2 address from the same subnet. How can I overwrite the default config , and not to have the first address available ?
I have been noticing a trend on boxes running 11.4 getting RX dropped packets where prior to 11.4 they did not get them. Basically every box running 11.4 now logs dropped RX packets. Have tried changing cables, and in one case replaced the NIC with a different brand (and driver) nic. Also played with receive buffers and yet the counters still increment. In addition to OpenSUSE, I run several operating systems to include Centos, Scientific Linux, Debian, OpenIndiana, HP-UX, VMS and so forth. So far this anomaly has only shown up on machines running OpenSUSE 11.4. Any one else noticing this on your OS 11.4 machines? If so, were you able to resolve?

I am experimenting with Xen with the standard kernel (kernel-xen package) and utilities. I already got bridged setup to work with a single domU, but found out that because of my wireless card I cannot expect bridging to work when connected wirelessly. Now I am trying a NAT setup but I cannot seem to get any network connection from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa. Comparing the network devices and routing tables of others, I cannot see any problem.
The domU runs with IP 10.0.0.1 and the dom0 has a vif with IP 10.0.0.128 with a default gateway of 10.0.0.254. Pinging from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa does not show any traffic at all when I use tcpdump to monitor eth0 in the domU or the vif interface in dom0. It seems that basic connectivity of the vif interface and eth0 in the domU does not work. Any tips on how to debug this problem?
I have a laptop running 11.2 with an internal Broadcom-based Wi-Fi card that's working fine. I'm trying to get 802.11n going with the WUSB600N. The USB ID on this device is 1737:0079. I believe this means it's a "V2" with an RT3572 chip.
No driver loads for this device when it's plugged in. If I do a "modprobe rt2870sta", a driver loads, and syslog shows "rtusb init" and "usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2870". But ifconfig -a doesn't show a new network interface. I've also tried building the RT3572 driver from the manufacturer's web site. It builds fine, and modprobe will load it, but I get the same results as the rt2870sta driver.
I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.
I'm using 11.2 with KDE.
I can connect to the Internet on my WLAN just fine (using Opera) and can dload torrent files (using the same).
However, I have had trouble accessing some community repositories in the past, cannot synchronise with an NTP server (annoying since my battery is low and time and date are reset most reboots) and cannot use the lyrics function or Wikipedia function in Amarok. Nor can I connect to the net using Firefox (though conqueror works just fine...) I cannot download torrents on KTorrent either.
It seems that there is some sort of 'permission'/connectivity issue.
The internet has been working happily on my Mythbuntu machine for many months but stopped working overnight.If I try to do "sudo start networking" I get a "Job failed to start" message.There's also a solid orange light on the ethernet socket.As it's been working for months, I don't think my interfaces config needs updating.Looking at what's been updated recently on the system:
1) I've configured the machine to wake from USB. It was working for a couple of days so I don't believe this is the issue.
2) I set up wake-on-lan with ethtool. Again, this was working (although it did seem to disable wake-on-usb and required a reboot to fix)
3) Update to 11.04 - I said no to this, as 10.10 was working very nicely indeed.
I've disabled wake on lan and rebooted. No joy.
ethtool detects the ethernet controller ok and it's listed in lshw.
I was having trouble with some software detecting ports so i removed ufw and now have no internet

On one of my F10 boxes yesterday, I installed several NM packages with yum update after being advised of their availability. Today, (the first reboot since installation) I no longer have network access on that box.

Now I have upgraded to Karmic, and when I try to attach the virtual machine to the USB scanner I see its line (and all other lines) greyed out, see the screenshot below:
Thus I have lost USB connectivity after upgrade to Karmic. Also in the yellow status box "Unavailable" appears. how to use my scanner and other USB devices again?
Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on dual boot computer. Each OS is on separate hard drive with GNOME selection between Ubuntu and Windows 7 Ultimate. Firefox was working fine yesterday when I went to use today, nothing. Email through Thunderbird is down as well.

A network client computer gets ip address from dhcp server, loads initrd and failed on Loading Istallation System stage 4 or 5. If I try to continue installation in manual mode I get an error net_activate: ifconfig eth0 up failed I tryed network cards from different vendors it did not help. Ubuntu linux installs successfully in current environment.
Last night while setting up wired & wireless connection in openSuse 11.2 Gnome version via YAST's ifup, I got wireless but lost wired connection (interface eth0). Dmesg shows that eth0 became eth1. I cannot get eth0 back. Is there any way to remedy this situation, eg. get info from the Ubuntu partition in my triple-boot laptop, without having to re-install openSUSE?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite L305-SP6944C, Pentium Dual Core 2.16, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, DVD-RAM UJ880AS, display 15.6 TFT widescreen, ethernet Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express, WLAN Realtek RLT8187, Opensuse 11.2 and KDE 4.3.1. Installation was OK and finally the wireless card is working... but I don't have conectivity bacause in the browser (Firefox) appears a message saying "the server can't be found"
I follow the howto write by Swerdna. With ndiswrapper I install the XP driver for RLT8187, KnetworkManager is in charge of connections showing both eth0 and wlan0, the wireless sign of router Dlink DIR-280 is OK, in the dialog box of network connection I put the mac address of the wlan card but I think that is not the problem.
Other thing that I missed is that I don't find boot.ini at any directory to add modprobe ndiswrapper in the boot sequence, in etc/init.d/ appears a "boot" file, is this file that I have to change to modprobe ndiswrapper??
I played with the Network Settings section in YaST, because I wanted to use the wireless network card I installed into the PCI port. OpenSUSE recognised the type of card and its MAC number, and told me that I needed to install a firmware (fwcutter something). I tried some changes on the cable internet connection (like activate on plugged) while I tried to change the wireless connection (like activate on boot).
What I have now is that my cable internet connection is not working at all (it was working just 3 days ago), my wireless internet connection is, as always, not working either. I managed to work the wireless card on Windows XP by finding its drivers.
Since the problem is with my office computer, I cannot answer the exact brand names of the ethernet card and wireless card. Shall I reinstall OpenSUSE 11.3 from the DVD I have?
Second problem: OpenSUSE does not recognise my external harddisk, it gives an error about mounting the device.

once upon a time i manually entered my ISP's DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf Now i have changed ISP, my old DNS setting are still present even though i have edited my resolv.conf file to my new ISP's DNS servers. Internet still works fine, i just want to use my new ISP's DNS as my old ISP will be closing its doors very soon. Am i doing something wrong, or better put.forgot to edit another file..? I did do this a while ago, so i apologise in advance for my incompetence. I'm stilling running 11.1 / Router has DHCP configured. my resolv.conf file is below

I cannot uncheck the "Change Hostname via DHCP" box because it is disabled. Next to it says "No interface with dhcp". How can I fix it? I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3/KDE4
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the network. Worth two network cards and Ian wan. Do not take the ip. When the system boots not included until you do the command ifconfig eth0 up. The network card is connected to a router, he does not see it. Router working, tested. Network card is working well, tested on Windows. RX RT packages go, withheld support for ipv6 and packages no longer go.
View 14 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately I haven't been able to figure out yet how to share specific directories only, so I set up my Samba server to share users' home directories (which is not a security issue here since the only possible client is my other machine). My user's home directory contains a symlinked directory on another hard drive partition, which I had to explicitly share to be able to access it from the other machine. This setup has been working for months now, but for a reason that escapes me at the moment it stopped working today, presumably after samba got updated from 3.4.2-1.1.3.1 to 3.4.3-3.2.1.
The error message on the client (Windows XP/SP3) for this one above mentioned directory, and for this directory alone, is "Access denied"; I can access all other directories fine.
After having updated unconditionally all packages in Kde-desktop-factory-repository to get the latest version 4.4.4, I can no longer connect to the Internet through Knetworkmanager. I receive the the following message from a pop-up window when clicking on the Knetworkmanager icon

I just upgraded from Suse 10.x to 11.2. Unfortunately, I didn't use 10.2 much and I('m a bit overwhelmed by the upgrade. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
After my upgrade, I lost Internet access. I don't really know my way around too well, but I did try to ping my router, but had no success. (Although I can ping 127.0.0.1).
I'm guessing that this means network access is not configured, although it looks OK to me.
