Ubuntu :: Failsafe Terminal - Session Only Lasted Less Than 10 Seconds

Aug 8, 2010

when i did that, I turned it back on, and well I had this huge huge problem, i've made a few threads about it. So I had to go through a manual FSCK. I did all that and I do have the cd, although when I try to boot off of the live cd, it gives me a bunch of buffer errors, I have a thread or two about that problem too. So i can't boot off a live cd and fix it through that.

Now i've gotton to the point where I can get to the login screen, it looks normal and everything but when I log into a normal session it greets me with this Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. View details (~/.xsession-errors file)

Code: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US. Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default. mkdtemp: private socket dir: Permission denied

So i have no idea what that all means but i did understand failsafe terminal. So when I go to the failsafe terminal to try and fix things, I'm completely lost. I don't know what to type at all. I'm a windows user most of the time.

Install :: Display Fails In Opensuse 11.4 / What To Do?

Mar 25, 2011

I have been with opensuse from 10, and I currently run 11.3 on my desktops. My attempt to install 11.4 failed. It produced a display with many tiny rectangles instead of a gui. I guess there is a discrepancy between the times produced by the x and the y display drivers and the times expected by the display hardware. I can't blame it on the display hardware, though, because I switched to another monitor and got the same error. I did the usual tests from the install screen, and there are no errors. If I run the program in fail-safe mode, the display is text only. In this case there is no x-server. I have not observed that in 11.3 fail-safe.

OpenSUSE :: Gtk-WARNING **: Cannot Open Display: :0

May 29, 2011

For example, the gparted application menu item doesn't work; using it means that there is almost no filesystem support. The only way to get it to work is to open a terminal, run 'su -', and then open it from there. As another example, I tried creating a nautilus script to open files as root with a command like this:

Code:

for uri in $NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_URIS; do
gnomesu -c "gnome-open '$uri'"
done

When I try using it, it just fails. Typing out the command in the terminal gives this (tested on a text file):

Code:

No protocol specified
(gedit:13672): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

I'm pretty sure the problem is that it's granting privileges, but not using the full root environment, or something along those lines.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu V9.1 Fails To Boot After Fresh Install And Display Anomalies At The Desktop

Mar 22, 2010

The last version a Linux I had was Mandrake v9.1. However, in looking to get the latest/greatest Linux I downloaded Ubuntu and Kubuntu. After installing Kubuntu the system reboots and fails to boot into the OS. After the P.O.S.T all I get a the word "GRUB". There is no response to any keys with the exception of Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am temporarily able to get passed the boot problem if I boot from the CD and choose boot from primary hard menu option. I'm not sure how to fix the boot up problem and could use some advice. However, using the CD to boot up the hard drives installation leads me to my next problem.

While in a desktop session I am unable to drag windows by their title bar. When attempting to drag a window, the desktop becomes covered with parts of the original window spreading all over the screen in multiple directions. It looks like a kaleidoscope or bad acid trip image. I suspect the video anomalies might be configuration related or improper driver. Again guidance would be greatly appreciated here.

I have a good 'ole Matrox MGA Millenium card installed into a P4 1.8ghz system, with 512 MB ram. The hard drive originally had an old install of Mandrake v9.1, but all of the partitions were wiped and I created 3 new partitions:

- /dev/sda1 20GB Bootable/Primary Partition EXT4 (Unbuntu mounted at /)
- /dev/sda2 18GB Primary EXT4 (Kubuntu mounted at /mnt/Ubuntu_dsktop_91)
- /dev/sda3 2GB Swap space

My intent was to install Ubuntu on the 2nd primary partition and be able to switch between them. However, I tried installed Ubuntu on the first partition (reformatted of course) and I encounter the same boot problem and display problem.

General :: Firefox Freezes For About 10 Seconds At Startup?

Sep 7, 2011

Every time I launch Firefox and go visiting some websites, I notice it freezes for about 10 seconds. Not always in the same websites, but it always happens sometime in the first 2 or 3 minutes of running. I can see the hard disk led is ON all the time the browser is hung.

My operating system is Linux and I don't currently have any extension/plugin installed here.

I have no form completion, no history and have no more than 20-30 bookmarks.

Has somebody noticed something similar, or know how can I debug this to find out what Firefox is doing or trying to do?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Display Would Sometimes Go Black For A Few Seconds

Oct 7, 2010

I installed Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite about a month ago. It worked for about three hours. I installed Wine, and it still worked but the display would sometimes go black for a few seconds. Later that day I rebooted and that was it, no more Ubuntu. It goes through all of the process of booting but then the screen just goes black before I even get to the purple Ubuntu screen. I'm running this on a drive in an enclosure so I simply plugged the drive into another machine ( actually two other machines ), and it works perfectly. I have an old Vista drive that I put in the Toshiba and that works just fine, so it's not a pure hardware issue. Just to be sure I wiped the Ubuntu drive and re-installed, this time without installing wine. No Toshiba love. Just the black screen. I even made a flash drive with the loader and iso from the Ubuntu site. Same deal. It starts to boot from the flash and then just goes black where you would normally expect the purple Ubuntu screen. This thing is driving me nuts and I am at a point where I really need this machine working and will be faced with simply wiping the Ubuntu drive and installing Windows.

Hardware :: Display Goes Black After A Couple Of Seconds?

Oct 4, 2010

I had my system running fine on Debian for about a month and a half. Then tonight the display suddenly went black. The system was still running, but my screen was black (though the monitor didn't indicate that it had lost signal). I restarted the computer; it booted through the BIOS and showed me my GRUB menu, but then the display went black again. Shorting the jumper pins to clear CMOS data didn't help; in fact, that made the display go black even sooner. Now, I see my motherboard's BIOS splash screen for a couple of seconds, and the display goes black. I know the system is still booting okay, because I hear the usually noises from the internal speaker. But I now have no visual output.

Could this be an issue with the motherboard or the video card? The board doesn't have onboard video, or else I'd try that. And I don't have any spare boards, video cards, or monitors available to me here. I did try using a D-sub cable instead of DVI-D (my monitor and video card support both), but that was no better. What can I do to try to fix this problem?

Motherboard: MSI 870A-G54
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 250 (at 3.0 GHz, not overclocked)
Video card: Sapphire 100252HDMI Radeon HD 4550
Monitor: Asus VW195T

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded To 11.3, System Hangs Every 10 Seconds For Half A Second?

Jul 20, 2010

I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenVPN Woes - TLS Handshake Fails To Complete Within 60 Seconds?

Oct 19, 2010

I have OpenVPN set up on my server at home to allow me into my home network when I'm away from home. When I set it up, I tested it using my friend's wifi so I know it works on a local geographic scale. Now I'm away from home, the TLS handshake fails to complete within 60 seconds. I assume it's timing out, as I can tracepath to the server on port 1194 successfully. From reading the OpenVPN documentation, I thought that adding "tls-timeout=120" to the client's config file would double the time allowed, but the handshake still fails with the same error message:

Code:
Tue Oct 19 10:45:17 2010 us=930956 TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds (check your network connectivity)
Tue Oct 19 10:45:17 2010 us=931012 TLS Error: TLS handshake failed

Why is the option not being read correctly from the file - does it need to be in the server's config file also?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Keeps Freezing - Getting Black Screen And After 30 Seconds The DVD Player Stops Running

Jan 17, 2010

I am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.

I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.
