OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Alsa Based Software Multi-band Graphic Audio Frequency Equalizer That Works With 11.x?
May 15, 2010
Does anyone know of an alsa based software multi-band (10 or more) graphic audio frequency equalizer that works with Suse 11.x? To be clear, I don't mean an equalizer within an audio or video player. One that can be used with any sound application, that works between the output of the player and the output plugs on a motherboard or sound card.

I spent a few days trying to make audio work on my TV connected via HDMI to a PC. The speaker test used by the sound preferences was dead, as was MPlayer. I managed to find a solution for MPlayer, giving the option "-ao alsa:device=hdmi", as specified in this article:So, basically ALSA can see all my devices. This is the output of aplay -l:Quote:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1

This is a fresh install of 10.10 (although I had the problem on 10.04 as well). I have installed MythTV on here (via apt-get, its not MythBuntu), and use the system primarily for that. Myth works great, sound in everything, no problems.
However, not much else can play sound. Firefox (.....), totem, mplayer, all nothing. Either just no sound or crash. If I can set them to use Alsa (eg: VLC), then they work.
System is an Asus P5B and on-board sound. I've also got an Nvidia GT210 and would like to use the HDMI out, but can't get anything at all to go through this. Don't know if thats related or not. Sound problems existed before adding the GT210.
One strange thing is, I can go into Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware and click "Test Speakers". Of course nothing plays. However, if I then set the onboard card to "Off", and then back to "Analogue Stereo Duplex", then click "Test Speakers", the left speaker works (right is still silent). But from then on, Pulse apps can play sound, until next reboot. Having FF open on a ..... video or something similar prevents Myth from playing sounds however.
What can I do to get sound working sanely? I don't need optical out, surround or anything. Simple stereo will be fine at this point, via either the onboard or the GT210.

I've got some source code that loads and plays WAV files through the OSS drivers (and USB audio). The code works even under 2.6.34. Is there any benefit to rewriting the code using the ALSA system?

I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Before that (and seems after a fatal upgrade of my graphic driver) I could only start the graphic surface (sax2?/xorg?) in the save modus of suse 11.1. helps others (with intel onboard graphic controller in their notebook) also.

As you may, not that long time ago, Amarok 2* got an equalizer. Amarok 2.3 equalizer behaves differently than equalizers in all other players I used (including Amarok 1.4). I just cannot make Amarok 2 sound right. I set equalizer to Full Bass + Treble preset. It is somewhat better than "Zero" preset, but it sounds too blunt (flat) nonetheless, while in Amarok 1.4 (and in Clementine) this preset sound just right for me.
Details (Amarok 2.3.0):The most obvious difference what I see is preamp (pre-amp), which is set to 0 dB in Amarok 1.4 preset and to -4.9 dB in Amarok 2. When I try to move it up to 0 dB, while Full Bass + Treble preset is active, I get unbearable high pitch distortions already with pre-amp set to -2 dB. I tried playing creating my own preset, but I cannot get the same sound as in Amarok 1.4.
In other words:is there any way to make Full Bass + Treble preset Amarok 2.3.0 sound like Amarok 1.4 preset?I am not an audio expert of any kind, but Amarok 2.3.0 just sounds different (in a bad way) for me. Maybe I am missing something?

For some reason my sound stops working in KDE4. I can't trace it to any particular event, it seems to happen randomly. I think the problem started when I tried installing ktts (the text to speech engine) but I cannot be sure. I've now removed ktts but my problem persists. The strange thing is that if I go to the sound configuration in yast and play the test sound it works fine. But if I try play the test sound in multimedia settings from within systemsettings then I get an error saying "The audio playback device HDA Intel (AD198x Analog) does not work." Also that error message window is titled phonon.
I didn't install phonon but notice that it's installed. I assume it was installed with the default install because trying to remove it brings up over a 100 dependencies. The left speaker / right speak test from the konsole works but only as su and not as me. I get permission errors. Is that normal?
Code:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
speaker-test 1.0.21
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
[code]....
I also notice that sometimes when I boot up, after I login at the graphic login screen it kicks me out to the command prompt asking me to log in again. When I log in and "startx" KDE starts up but without sound and no kmix. Trying to start kmix manually doesn't start it. I just get an empty window.Again the sound works from the yast sound test.I've tried removing the kmix config files from /.kde4/config/ but that doesn't help. The logs don't show anything obvious to me and the problem appears to occur randomly in so much I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it yet.I also noticed during a session that I have this sound problem and after I've fixed it by resetting the sound card in yast that kde doesn't shutdown when trying to shut the laptop down.
I get the kde logging off chime but the desktop remains and is fully functional. After that any attempt to log-off or shutdowm is ignored. I'm forced to run the shutdown command from the konsole to shut the laptop down. I'm not sure how it's related but it only happens after the sound problem occurs. I'm using KDE4.4.1 but this started in KDE4.4.0 so the update didn't help any. When I upgraded to KDE4.4.0 I started with a fresh .kde4 directory.

I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. Both playback and record were working using only ALSA. Karmic installed PulseAudio. Looking around the forums I found a post on how to update to the latest ALSA driver (+ lib + utils) and remove pulse to take it out of the equation. With or without pulse I cannot get record working. For work I need to use my laptop as a softphone. I've tested my headset on another machine - headphones and mic both work. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. I have a Thinkpad T61P. Below is the output of some hopefully useful commands ...uname -aLinux moes 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 16:20:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

i just installed ubuntu yesterday, first time trying linux, and i like it a lot. The only problem i'm having is that some screens move really slow on the browser, like if it still needs a video/graphic drive to be installed. For the sound i was trying to play some mp3s, and i downloaded all the drives online like it asked me to and now when it plays sometimes it's normal and sometimes it sounds weird, and sometimes it lags. Sorry if that's a noob question, but i was wondering if there's and easy solution to that.

The problem is that banshee mutes sound for other apps like flash, the solution is to select alsa for the devices in audio preferences... but don't have that in the list, only "internal audio analog stereo".
This wasn't a problem until i made some updates and got broken sound, to fix it i used the AlsaUpgrade script. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 by the way.

I've recently encountered a sound issue and I recently installed the nvidia gt220 in my box and was thrilled at how well it worked with hdmi until I tried to use the audio. I updated my alsa and went into the alsamixer and it does detect my gt220. I unmuted all spdif and tested the sound and with success the sound test works. I know the card and device numbers that work with the audio but now sure where to make changes so it will default to that device instead of the onboard audio that it seems to try to use now. I am running lucid 10.04.

I have alsa 1.0.22 on my system. I can plug in my pcmcia card into my laptop, and my computer register's it, but when I plug in my microdock, alsa still thinks it's an EMU 1010, which is just the basic one, and I have a 1616, so none of my inputs register anything at all, so I can't record audio. The only thing that seems to be working perfectly or at all, are the audio jack on the pc card, the headphone jack on the microdock, and the stereo mini out for speakers on the microdock. I think it's odd that the headphone and stereo outs work on the microdock, but I can't input any audio. how to get the rest of my microdock to work?

I posted my question on Linx.com, but have not received an answer after 75 viewers to my question:
Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I really need a replacement for Audacity, cause Free Sound Recorder is made for Windows Platform......I need a Linux sound Guru for the answer.I am not doing this to pirate music....I have over 3,450 music track inside my Rhapsody subscription and I like to record music for personal listening on my portable CD player and at 0.99 per track charge to do this in Rhapsody, I might as well by a recording studio and hire the singing artist.Basically in short..I need to know if there is a setting I can engage in my Alsa Mixer panel that will allow me to record directly from my sound card without using my microphone as a default. When I mute the microphone in my Alsa control panel, my Audacity program will not record using the microphone, which I do not want to use anyway. I just want to record straight from my sound card, as this eliminates all hiss, distortion that is inherited with using a microphone.

When using Skype, the sound suddenly stops working, both ways (about 4-5 min into the communication). The message "connection failed: connection terminated" is displayed and when I click OK, Pulse Audio closes and Skype freezes. Actually, and I just realized this, the sound suddenly stops working on Firefox as well. (The Alsa plugin in Pulse Audio 'Playback' just disappears). However this occurs after a long period of use. I've just watched about 30 continuous minutes of live soccer through Espn3, before the audio stopped working. No message was displayed though, and just refreshing the page fixed it.
All this makes me think this is some type of Alsa-Pulse Audio problem. I really don't understand well what they are, although I believe Alsa is a driver and Pulse Audio a sound server? Sorry, I started using Linux very recently. I am using Ubuntu-Studio 10.04 and the rt Kernel (2.6.33-29-realtime). Sometimes I use Pulse Audio in Jack and vice-versa, using pactl load-module module-jack-sink and source respectively, but my problem seems to occur even if I unload the modules before using Skype. I believe all this started happening after I started using the rt kernel and/or the module-jack-sink/source.

I'm trying to get mplayer to recognize ALSA and/or pulse audio server, preferably both. On my laptop, mplayer works fine -- mplayer -ao help lists oss, alsa, pulse, and jack, among others. But here's the output of mplayer -ao help on the computer I'm trying to set up:
[Code].....
ALSA and pulse are both installed, and pulse is running -- ps -A | grep pulse gives: 3627? 00:00:00 pulseaudio Yet, mplayer fails to realize this. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's really simple...but what?

I'm having some issues with audio crackling/buzzing when turning up the volume, or on songs that have overclipped / overdriven parts, which doesn't happen on Windows (on it those sections are just "dampened"). Is there some certain settings in ALSA that are used to deal with this? Or is it something specific to the driver for the hardware? Speaking of which I'm using some integrated audio which goes by the name of Intel ICH7, and the chip itself is Analog Devices AD1981B.
I'm only using ALSA, without PulseAudio, and I've made sure the volumes both in the media players and under alsamixer aren't turned too high (PCM is at 47% and "Headphones" -- what is "Master" on Windows and on other soundcards under Linux -- is on 22%), so it isn't an issue with the software mixer being turned up too high. Also I'm using a pair of quality headphones (Sony MDRV55) so it's not an issue with the analog audio output either. I've also tried multiple other headphones and the result is the same.

I have some microphone problems. I can't record anything. (I'm using openSUSE 11.3)
My sound card was detected almost correctly (at least the chip-set was i think). I have an Asrock motherboard (k7upgrade880, with a Southbridge: VIA 8237 | Audio: CMedia CMI9761 6 channel AC'97.
I ran these commands so far with these results - while i was following the audio troubleshooting guide (SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE
But i have NO audio playback problems - movies, games, music all play well. And the Microphone guid has a broken link
I tried to change my 50-sound.conf file (i read it on a forum, I'm new to linux troubleshooting) from this:
options snd slots=snd-via82xx to this: options snd slots=snd-via82xx position_fix=1
But that did not work either. I did not get any sound with the last line.

Is there a Ubuntu distribution in which sound "just works"? I'm booting into Windows 7 far too much.I am running both Jaunty (on an old P4V533-MX desktop) where for some reason my sound went away, and Lucid, on a new Dell laptop (all-Intel Studio 14). I thought a new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on modern hardware would give me rhythmbox back, but I get no sound of any kind from the Dell laptop after installation, although everything works Ok if I boot into a W7 (came with the purchase) partition.
I don't want to fiddle with configuration files any more - just wondering if there is a "most-dependable" Ubuntu with respect to audio. Which I will install. Frustrated and impatient after weeks of this.I am an old (hairy eared) Unix fan but IMO if Linux continues to complicate itself so freely (i.e. Pulseaudio - I don't know an audio mixer from a can opener and would prefer to remain that way), then the small market share it has will slip away rather than grow.
