I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and I've just gotten round to updating the sound. The ALSA built in is too old to have support for the X-Fi chip used in the Forte so I built and installed ALSA 10.0.22.1. On reboot, it detects the card as X-Fi Titanium series (as expected), but when I run the test

speaker-test -D surround51 -c6 -twav I only get output from Center, Rear Left, Rear Right and LFE - i.e. the front channel is missing. I'm not sure if there are any ALSA configuration files left lying around from my old sound card (Intel HDA audio) and I've forgotton what they might be called or where they would be.
Can someone tell me the locations of the various ALSA configuration files? Or is this a known thing about the Forte? (Maybe the card has the front two channels wired differently or something) Or maybe there's a configuration option I've missed.
I'm using a Realtek alc888 sound chipset (integrated on GA-P965-DS3 mobo) which is capable of 8-channel output (front, side, rear, center/sub). The front-out jack on my mobo is disfunctional and thus can't be used (aweful distortions and such dueo faulty connection), thus it needs to be reassigned to another jack, but simulating a 'front-out' jack. I was able to do this in windows using the Realtek HD Audio application that comes with the drivers (reassigning jacks) and need to do something similar in ubuntu.I've searched through a lot of ALSA documentation, tried to take examples of switching channels using asound.conf and modify them to my needs, but nothing has come of it. As such I've resorted to asking here.Another less important issue is doing something similar but duplicating front-out and mapping it onto the side-out jack, for headphones.

I found many threads with oddly similar complaints, but their solutions haven't worked for me.Last week I upgraded my system, basically a complete overhaul (in the old case). The new system is based on an ASUS MB which comes with VIA VT1708B audio onboard. I installed the latest 32-bit Linux Mint on it. The case's front audio jack doesn't work, the rear audio works but is too quiet.
Things I have tried that have not worked:Different combinations of settings in the basic sound preferences dialog, the GNOME ALSA mixer, and the PulseAudio volume control (I've probably played around with these so much that I've tried every combination)
I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
Getting sound out of the back ports just fine. Using an ASUS P5N73-AM motherboard and a fresh install of 10.04. Everything else works perfectly except the blasted front panel headphone port.

I know something that I will have to change the model of my module to make the front audio jack works but I couldn't find a model related line in my ALSA configuration file - /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (I was able to get to that point in Ubuntu 10.04, may be something has changed).
After a recent hardware upgrade, I'm no longer able to use the front panel audio ports on my Antec P180 case. They worked fine before with my old ASUS motherboard, but with my new MSI 870-G45 motherboard I can't get them to work for some reason.
I checked out this thread, [URL] but didn't see much in the way of problems/solutions with front panel audio ports, but it's a lengthy thread so maybe I missed it.
now half of the speakers plug is stuck in the back of my PC. cant get it out, because it's very deep. i decided to use the front jack for sound but it wont work.already tried alsa mixer and upgraded my kernel.i think the problem is that i need to somehow kill the jack in the back of PC because its still alive and sending signals to that half-dead jack

I tried for weeks to get it to work, but eventually I just pulled a cheap Dynex DX-SC51 card from another machine and turns out it works, but now I can't use the inputs and headphone jack on the front of the case without going into system>preferences>sound and changing "output" back to "internal analog audio stereo"
Is there any way to activate these two audio devices at the same time?
I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE version (64-bit) on a desktop PC. My sound card is ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 (PCI-E). I am brand-new to the Linux experience. I get audio out to my speakers which are connected to the jacks of the rear I/O panel of my PC. I do not however get audio out to my headphones which are connected to the jack in the front panel. I know that the headphones work fine because they do so when I boot up in Windows XP. Here is what I discovered so far: KMix does not show that I have a front panel audio channel. But when I run AlsaMixer it does show that I have such channel and, upon manually turning the volume on, I do have sound out to the headphones.
Therefore, I deduct that I have some sort of configuration problem with KMix and would like to fix it as I prefer to use the GUI interface instead of the AlsaMixer one. It's just a matter of preference! I would like to troubleshoot things using the Audio Troubleshooting guide (SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE) but I notice that openSUSE's version 11.4 is not mentioned in it. Should I follow the instructions for version 11.3 or wait for an updated guide?
i am using ubuntu 10.04 lts "lucid lynx", and has been encountering problems with audio recently.
i found out for some reason that my system fails to produce sound through pulseaudio, especially when an application is using it (e.g audacious).
the details of the problem:
1. i am using the pulseaudio equalizer from the repository, and i set a program (e.g. audacious) to use pulseaudio so that i can activate the equalizer.
2. while playing, all of my other applications lose the ability to produce any sound, and changing back to alsa during playback (which is using pulseaudio) in audacious indicates that the device is busy. examples include the loss of sound while playing a video from videos.
rough breakdown of what i want to (be able to) do: have sound for all applications using it, for example being able to play a video in videos from my browser and play music in audacious simultaneously.
is there a workaround for this? i'd like to think that there is, but so far my search returned nil.

The problem is that banshee mutes sound for other apps like flash, the solution is to select alsa for the devices in audio preferences... but don't have that in the list, only "internal audio analog stereo".
This wasn't a problem until i made some updates and got broken sound, to fix it i used the AlsaUpgrade script. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 by the way.
I've recently encountered a sound issue and I recently installed the nvidia gt220 in my box and was thrilled at how well it worked with hdmi until I tried to use the audio. I updated my alsa and went into the alsamixer and it does detect my gt220. I unmuted all spdif and tested the sound and with success the sound test works. I know the card and device numbers that work with the audio but now sure where to make changes so it will default to that device instead of the onboard audio that it seems to try to use now. I am running lucid 10.04.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just had a phone call from an 8.04/win xp duel boot user who has lost the boot entry to xp after a 8.04 update. I guessed at a system upgrade but she checked and is still on Hardy. They write and only have the xp for printing as there is no Linux support for the cannon printer. Using the printer is important. I've said I'll pop round and try to sort it out. Any ideas how I can do this. Update grub in recovery mode maybe or if I need the command line what should I try? I'd like to know before calling as though I'm not quite a novice this isn't a problem I've had to cope with since grub 2 beta ( didn't solve it then either an am still using 9.04 ). Hacking legacy will be new to me. As this is a writers machine with all her work on it I'd regard it as a critical pc, don't want to mess things up for her.

I can plug in my pcmcia card into my laptop, and my computer register's it, but when I plug in my microdock, alsa still thinks it's an EMU 1010, which is just the basic one, and I have a 1616, so none of my inputs register anything at all, so I can't record audio. The only thing that seems to be working perfectly or at all, are the audio jack on the pc card, the headphone jack on the microdock, and the stereo mini out for speakers on the microdock. I think it's odd that the headphone and stereo outs work on the microdock, but I can't input any audio. how to get the rest of my microdock to work?

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I spent a few days trying to make audio work on my TV connected via HDMI to a PC. The speaker test used by the sound preferences was dead, as was MPlayer. When using Skype, the sound suddenly stops working, both ways (about 4-5 min into the communication). The message "connection failed: connection terminated" is displayed and when I click OK, Pulse Audio closes and Skype freezes. Actually, and I just realized this, the sound suddenly stops working on Firefox as well. (The Alsa plugin in Pulse Audio 'Playback' just disappears). However this occurs after a long period of use. I've just watched about 30 continuous minutes of live soccer through Espn3, before the audio stopped working. No message was displayed though, and just refreshing the page fixed it.
All this makes me think this is some type of Alsa-Pulse Audio problem. I really don't understand well what they are, although I believe Alsa is a driver and Pulse Audio a sound server? Sorry, I started using Linux very recently. I am using Ubuntu-Studio 10.04 and the rt Kernel (2.6.33-29-realtime). Sometimes I use Pulse Audio in Jack and vice-versa, using pactl load-module module-jack-sink and source respectively, but my problem seems to occur even if I unload the modules before using Skype. I believe all this started happening after I started using the rt kernel and/or the module-jack-sink/source.

After my upgrade, I lost Internet access. I don't really know my way around too well, but I did try to ping my router, but had no success. (Although I can ping 127.0.0.1).
I'm guessing that this means network access is not configured, although it looks OK to me.
I'm trying to get mplayer to recognize ALSA and/or pulse audio server, preferably both. On my laptop, mplayer works fine -- mplayer -ao help lists oss, alsa, pulse, and jack, among others. But here's the output of mplayer -ao help on the computer I'm trying to set up:

ALSA and pulse are both installed, and pulse is running -- ps -A | grep pulse gives: 3627? 00:00:00 pulseaudio Yet, mplayer fails to realize this. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's really simple...but what?

During the process I was asked "do you want to replace this alsa* file" I said Yes After the migration I had alsa 1.0.23 and the aplay -l showed the proper sounds cards. using "aplay -Dplughw:X,Y -fcd /mySound.wav" When X, Y was 0,0 I had sound though analog When X was 1 and Y was 3, 7, 8, 9 had no sound though hdmi.

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) a few days ago (without backing up any data first). At first everything seemed fine but yesterday three things happened:
1. All my emails and address book have disappeared in Thunderbird. When I started Thunderbird, it took me through the wizard and seems to have overwritten my profile with a new one. There is only one profile in the Thunderbird folder and it seems to contain no emails and only a new, blank address book (the small size of the folder backs this up. I searched the hard drive but found no other emails or address book files.
2. My bookmarks have disappeared from Google Chrome. Again, it seems to have created a new, blank bookmark file. The bookmark.bak file is similarly blank and when I search I can find no other bookmark files.
3. The Pictures folder (in the home folder) is now empty; suggesting that ubuntu has either overwritten the Pictures folder with a new blank folder or deleted all the files in it. Again, when I search the hard drive for jpg files, it doesn't find any of the pictures that were in the Pictures folder.
I have just upgraded to Fedora 14, with some hope that a F13 kernel crash issue would be resolved. Alas, not, and I have lost audio in one of my sound cards. I am using 2 sound cards in my computer. The first one (VT 1708 on the M2V MX SE motherboard) is used for FLDIGI (ham radio program). The other one (Creative Labs SB Live!) is tied to a speaker/microphone. At some point in mid 2010, I started getting kernel crash reports (not sure which kernel version this started), and the VIA VT 1708 audio controller stopped working. The SB Live! card works fine.

So it seems to know it's there. How to get my sound back (and get rid of this kernel crash every time I start my computer)?
I'm having some issues with audio crackling/buzzing when turning up the volume, or on songs that have overclipped / overdriven parts, which doesn't happen on Windows (on it those sections are just "dampened"). Is there some certain settings in ALSA that are used to deal with this? Or is it something specific to the driver for the hardware? Speaking of which I'm using some integrated audio which goes by the name of Intel ICH7, and the chip itself is Analog Devices AD1981B.
I'm only using ALSA, without PulseAudio, and I've made sure the volumes both in the media players and under alsamixer aren't turned too high (PCM is at 47% and "Headphones" -- what is "Master" on Windows and on other soundcards under Linux -- is on 22%), so it isn't an issue with the software mixer being turned up too high. Also I'm using a pair of quality headphones (Sony MDRV55) so it's not an issue with the analog audio output either. I've also tried multiple other headphones and the result is the same.
