Software :: Benefit To Rewrite OSS-based Code To ALSA-based?
Aug 12, 2010
I've got some source code that loads and plays WAV files through the OSS drivers (and USB audio). The code works even under 2.6.34. Is there any benefit to rewriting the code using the ALSA system?

I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?

I am working on a set up, and I like to be able to toggle compiz on and off, or toggle dualscreen on and off. The thing is, I also have conky on my desktop as well as a terminal window embedded in my desktop (that requires compiz). So, when I turn comiz off, or resize my desktop, I want to be able to reposition conky/embedded-terminal and the terminals position is relative to my conky position and the size of my virtual desktop.
I can do this all fine, except that to reposition the terminal I need to kill it then reopen it. But if I kill gnome-terminal it kills ALL gnome-terminals instead of just my embedded one. How can I specifically close my embedded one and leave any others untouched? Lets say that the title of my embedded terminal is "trans777"Also, the trans777 titled gnome-terminal will be killed when compiz is not running.

Does anyone know of an alsa based software multi-band (10 or more) graphic audio frequency equalizer that works with Suse 11.x? To be clear, I don't mean an equalizer within an audio or video player. One that can be used with any sound application, that works between the output of the player and the output plugs on a motherboard or sound card.

I'm writing a bash shell script that among various other things will traverse through a directory with hundreds of files and rename those who match a pattern found in a config file. It's expected that only about one in ten files will actually match, and those who don't, will simply just be ignored for this purpose.
This should for instance cause the file "dBase program file December 1987.prg" to be renamed "Clipper source code December 1987.prg", and conversely "C++ source August 1996.cpp" to be renamed "C source code August 1996.cpp" etc.A sample file such as "Random Data File.dat" should not be renamed here since it's not mentioned in the config file..What is the quickest, most elegant way to do this in bash?I am thinking of using bash's built-in regex matching combined with the /bin/rename utility, but don't quite know how to get started to catch this..I guess there are plenty ways of doing this in perl and elsewhere as well, but since this has to integrate into a pre-existing bash script, that's what I'm looking for.Anyone out there with a spare moment to offer a hint in the right direction?

I have been scripting (or programming) in Bash shell for around 2+ years now. I have heard that ksh and zsh are better shells than bash. Are there any differences on the scripting side too, I mean is it easier to write a script in ksh or zsh rather than bash? Is there any benefit to code in ksh or zsh instead of bash.

Ive been looking for a Debian based distro that is as close to Debian as can be with all the codecs and stuff already in it, also wireless. I would go with Debian, but TBH, I am not wanting to toy around with setting it up. Yes, there is Ubuntu which I have used for a while now, but I am wanting something closer to the source, as it were. Also, from what I understand, Ubuntu also changes things and they arent straight DEB anymore. Am I crazy? Is there anything like this? Or am I stuck with either Debian or Ubuntu?

I wish to install an older version of HandBrake, and it's saying something about how the newer version isn't available because of issues with the new versions of GNOME. I've still got Mint 8. So my question is, which version of Ubuntu is Mint 8 based off of? I think it's 9.10, but I just want to be sure.

I'd like to learn more about the VoIP protocol SIP. I read that Wireshark can be configured to filter stuff so that only SIP packets are shown, but the SIP server runs on a server with no GUI. Does someone know of a text-based packet sniffer that supports SIP?

I am not well versed in networks, I want to understand whether broadcasting is possible through a TCP based Server? If yes, then what are the complications? I searched Google and found this: [URL] It said
Quote:
The types of broadcasting uses on TCP/IP that I know about are:
1. ARP on IP
2. DHCP on IP
3. Routing table updates.

I work for a auto dealership, and they have a proxy server that is provided by toyota that does nothing other than route traffic some specific sites they use in the dealership. We are looking to put a local proxy server in place to filter web traffic of virus/inappropriate content. What I am looking to do is set everyone's proxy settings to point to our server but when someone puts in the toyota sites it will redirect them to toyota's proxy server and out. I am not sure if this is possible or not.

I have been using Linux for quite a while and have gotten pretty good at it, but recently I started using Backtrack in a VM and realized I have no idea what it is based on. Then I got to thinking I have no idea what that even means. For example, OSX is based on Darwin right, but what does that mean? Ubuntu is another that is based on Debian, but I don't know what that means.
The reason I'm asking is because in order to get my screen resolution and networking right in Backtrack I need to know what it is based on so I can download the proper packages to install the VirtualBox guest additions, and I have no idea. Is there a way to get this information from the operating system? Maybe uname -a is giving me the info and I just don't know where to look in the output?

This incident happened after I try to encrypt this partition and then an error message appears. If not mistaken, it contains an error number (I forget) and a warning which reads that can not remove the LABEL on the devices.
