Ubuntu Multimedia :: Alsa Works - But Not Pulse
Jan 27, 2011
This is a fresh install of 10.10 (although I had the problem on 10.04 as well). I have installed MythTV on here (via apt-get, its not MythBuntu), and use the system primarily for that. Myth works great, sound in everything, no problems.
However, not much else can play sound. Firefox (.....), totem, mplayer, all nothing. Either just no sound or crash. If I can set them to use Alsa (eg: VLC), then they work.
System is an Asus P5B and on-board sound. I've also got an Nvidia GT210 and would like to use the HDMI out, but can't get anything at all to go through this. Don't know if thats related or not. Sound problems existed before adding the GT210.
One strange thing is, I can go into Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware and click "Test Speakers". Of course nothing plays. However, if I then set the onboard card to "Off", and then back to "Analogue Stereo Duplex", then click "Test Speakers", the left speaker works (right is still silent). But from then on, Pulse apps can play sound, until next reboot. Having FF open on a ..... video or something similar prevents Myth from playing sounds however.
What can I do to get sound working sanely? I don't need optical out, surround or anything. Simple stereo will be fine at this point, via either the onboard or the GT210.

I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. Both playback and record were working using only ALSA. Karmic installed PulseAudio. Looking around the forums I found a post on how to update to the latest ALSA driver (+ lib + utils) and remove pulse to take it out of the equation. With or without pulse I cannot get record working. For work I need to use my laptop as a softphone. I've tested my headset on another machine - headphones and mic both work. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. I have a Thinkpad T61P. Below is the output of some hopefully useful commands ...uname -aLinux moes 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 16:20:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

When using Skype, the sound suddenly stops working, both ways (about 4-5 min into the communication). The message "connection failed: connection terminated" is displayed and when I click OK, Pulse Audio closes and Skype freezes. Actually, and I just realized this, the sound suddenly stops working on Firefox as well. (The Alsa plugin in Pulse Audio 'Playback' just disappears). However this occurs after a long period of use. I've just watched about 30 continuous minutes of live soccer through Espn3, before the audio stopped working. No message was displayed though, and just refreshing the page fixed it.
All this makes me think this is some type of Alsa-Pulse Audio problem. I really don't understand well what they are, although I believe Alsa is a driver and Pulse Audio a sound server? Sorry, I started using Linux very recently. I am using Ubuntu-Studio 10.04 and the rt Kernel (2.6.33-29-realtime). Sometimes I use Pulse Audio in Jack and vice-versa, using pactl load-module module-jack-sink and source respectively, but my problem seems to occur even if I unload the modules before using Skype. I believe all this started happening after I started using the rt kernel and/or the module-jack-sink/source.

I'm trying to get mplayer to recognize ALSA and/or pulse audio server, preferably both. On my laptop, mplayer works fine -- mplayer -ao help lists oss, alsa, pulse, and jack, among others. But here's the output of mplayer -ao help on the computer I'm trying to set up:
[Code].....
ALSA and pulse are both installed, and pulse is running -- ps -A | grep pulse gives: 3627? 00:00:00 pulseaudio Yet, mplayer fails to realize this. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's really simple...but what?

I have made a pretty sizable mistake. I was trying to figure out why my game was having sound issues when I was told to update my sound drivers. After a bit of searching, I came across this website. I downloaded and ran the script in the first link. Minor problem: I was using PulseAudio, not ALSA. Needless to say, the script didn't work. After the machine rebooted, I had no sound at all. I was planning on switching to ALSA anyway, so I found this thread and ran the following commands:

I want to remove pulse and install alsa instead but I can't seem to be able to do it. I tried to search for all packages with "pulse" in their names and purging them but it didn't work because aptitude wanted to remove all of the packages that used pulse with along with pulse.

Is it possible to install XBMC onto Ubuntu Lucid and still have passthrough audio to a connected receiver (i.e. a workaround with Pulse)? I have an Acer Aspire Revo R1600 connected via HDMI to my Onkyo reciever. I am able to get desktop sounds and play MP3 files from XBMC, but passthrough has been a bear. If I tell Pulse that my sound device is analog, for some reason I can get XBMC to pass through audio. However, I would like to keep system sounds and have the passthrough ability if it's possible. As I understand it (from about two weeks of fidgeting) this is a limitation of Pulse and it's lack of pass through support. It seems so simple. I've tried multiple different .asoundrc configirations none of which have gotten me there. I've upgraded Alsa. I'd rather not run XBMC live if I dont have to. I'd like to have the ability to have a workstation for when I need it. I've upgraded to the latest NVIDIA driver available from their website - 195.36.31.

I was just wondering if there was a way to use ALSA without PULSE, PULSE AUDIO is causing my Skype to crash continually.
I entered the following command into terminal- sudo apt-get remove --purge pulse-audio
Now my system has no sound at all, soundcards are detected in aplay -l, but unfortunately when i go to sound properties it just says waiting for sound system to respond.

I spent a few days trying to make audio work on my TV connected via HDMI to a PC. The speaker test used by the sound preferences was dead, as was MPlayer. I managed to find a solution for MPlayer, giving the option "-ao alsa:device=hdmi", as specified in this article:So, basically ALSA can see all my devices. This is the output of aplay -l:Quote:

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog]

I have some microphone problems. I can't record anything. (I'm using openSUSE 11.3)
My sound card was detected almost correctly (at least the chip-set was i think). I have an Asrock motherboard (k7upgrade880, with a Southbridge: VIA 8237 | Audio: CMedia CMI9761 6 channel AC'97.
I ran these commands so far with these results - while i was following the audio troubleshooting guide (SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE
But i have NO audio playback problems - movies, games, music all play well. And the Microphone guid has a broken link
I tried to change my 50-sound.conf file (i read it on a forum, I'm new to linux troubleshooting) from this:
options snd slots=snd-via82xx to this: options snd slots=snd-via82xx position_fix=1
But that did not work either. I did not get any sound with the last line.

Does anyone know of an alsa based software multi-band (10 or more) graphic audio frequency equalizer that works with Suse 11.x? To be clear, I don't mean an equalizer within an audio or video player. One that can be used with any sound application, that works between the output of the player and the output plugs on a motherboard or sound card.

I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

For some reason my sound stops working in KDE4. I can't trace it to any particular event, it seems to happen randomly. I think the problem started when I tried installing ktts (the text to speech engine) but I cannot be sure. I've now removed ktts but my problem persists. The strange thing is that if I go to the sound configuration in yast and play the test sound it works fine. But if I try play the test sound in multimedia settings from within systemsettings then I get an error saying "The audio playback device HDA Intel (AD198x Analog) does not work." Also that error message window is titled phonon.
I didn't install phonon but notice that it's installed. I assume it was installed with the default install because trying to remove it brings up over a 100 dependencies. The left speaker / right speak test from the konsole works but only as su and not as me. I get permission errors. Is that normal?
Code:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
speaker-test 1.0.21
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
[code]....
I also notice that sometimes when I boot up, after I login at the graphic login screen it kicks me out to the command prompt asking me to log in again. When I log in and "startx" KDE starts up but without sound and no kmix. Trying to start kmix manually doesn't start it. I just get an empty window.Again the sound works from the yast sound test.I've tried removing the kmix config files from /.kde4/config/ but that doesn't help. The logs don't show anything obvious to me and the problem appears to occur randomly in so much I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it yet.I also noticed during a session that I have this sound problem and after I've fixed it by resetting the sound card in yast that kde doesn't shutdown when trying to shut the laptop down.
I get the kde logging off chime but the desktop remains and is fully functional. After that any attempt to log-off or shutdowm is ignored. I'm forced to run the shutdown command from the konsole to shut the laptop down. I'm not sure how it's related but it only happens after the sound problem occurs. I'm using KDE4.4.1 but this started in KDE4.4.0 so the update didn't help any. When I upgraded to KDE4.4.0 I started with a fresh .kde4 directory.

I have Intel core 2 duo machine running Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit.
Whenever I play a mp3 on rythmbox and use the "top" command, the pulse audio is at top at 100%.
Is it trying to break my system just by running a mp3?
Is my system not able to detect two cores? or Whatever?
It's just unbearable.
Here is the output of top command:

I would like to redirect pulseaudio sound through ssh to a local client while seeing content through a vnc connection. Something like this:
Client: ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 user@server.net
Client: vncviewer localhost:5901
Server: Run a web browser with flash content on the server through vnc, but sound is redirected to the client.
A good example is Facebook flash games, most flash games require flash player 10 but my local client only supports up to version 9 because of the architechture.
Why? A number of reasons:
- The local client is not powerful enough to run flash content
- The local client has an architechture that flash does not support, eg ARM, PowerPC, etc.
- Save battery power - use the resources of a server instead of the client.
Environment:
Both the client and server have pulse audio installed and working. The server does not have a physical sound card installed but the client does.
Server: Ubuntu 10.04
Client: Ubuntu 10.10
I have tried these links so far: [URL]

After upgrading to 10.04 I get the following pulse error in mplayer before it starts.
Code:
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
[code]....
Not a biggie since I get both sound and video, but it takes a bit longer to start the file then before. Also Kde tells me that the sound card "pulse audio" is no longer connected although pulse seem to live just fine.

Just noticed that during calls skype uses ~30-50% cpu, + pulseaudio uses ~20%. I found some old threads on this like [URL] Or [URL]. The former suggests to purge pulse and use alsa/oss instead. The latter suggests changing mic in skype to DeviceXX and tweak the pulse.conf
There's also a launchpad bug on that with status Confirmed->invalid (due to "problem fixed in skype 2.1 beta") but looks like it's not (I am using 2.1 beta)
1. Does any1 has this problem?
2. I can't try 2nd link's approach as my skype has only PulseAudio in the settings, so I can't select Device or anything else!
3. Should I try to remove pulse in favor of ALSA? I'm pretty happy with pulse otherwise that this issue, I use it to record sound out of my sound card and I'm not sure if I can do this with alsa/os.

I'm still working on ubuntu 9.10 with an acer aspire 1810tz. To use my microphone I found out that I have to change my microphone settings because it's mono and the default setting is thinking it's stereo: With the Volume Controller I setup one chancel to 5 and the other to 90 and the mic is working fine. Starting Skype and using it I see that the setting is reducing the volume for the mic below 20, so nobody can hear me. I tried closing first Volume Controller and then starting Skype, no matter the volume of the mic is reduced. How do I stop this behavior?

So i have read some howtos for PulseAudio. They say i should starte PulseAudio Volume Control. ok.. Now i should go to the tab "Recording". This tab doesnt exist on my pc. I upgraded to the latest version of this volume control. It still doesnt exist.
I am using OpenSuse 11.0 with KDE4.3
Here are some screenshots:
