OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.5 Hangs Up While Logging In
Aug 29, 2010
I have an ACER TravelMate 6003LMI with openSUSE 11.3 and I updated now to KDE 4.5. So far, the update went fine, but now I cannot login anymore. openSUSE 11.3 boots up to the login prompt, I'm logging in, the KDE progress bar reaches about 75% and then it hangs up.

I've been using Jaunty since its launch. And i've installed Ubuntu 9.04 on dual boot with XP.Since the past week i am facing this problem, after i enter my username and password , Ubuntu proceeds to load the account. But hangs in midway...i.e the appln bar on the top and task bar at the bottom appear, and that's it..hangs up,the cursor also freezes.I've tried the recovery mode,by fixing broken packages and dpkg. Also The terminal appears with ctrl+alt+f2 at the login screen...I've also tried autoclean and configure -a during this...with no success.

Kde 4.3.1 started booting slow, real slow, real slow.. and logging out real slow. I tried un-instsalling everything since my last update. I then tried moving to the kde 4.3.5. Same problem. Any clues or should I just do reinstall? I am running a ACCER laptop Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 550 @ 2.00GHz. I have been using Linux for 10yrs.

I'm a recent convert to SUSE (well, linux generally), been running it happily on my desktop for about eight months now. So when I learned about KDE plasma netbook I jumped at the opportunity to put it on my laptop too.I have an Acer Aspire One, with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card. I'm not having any luck with knetworkmanager so I did my config in YaST. I can't get on my home wireless network, and I think the problem has something to do with the fact that it doesn't broadcast SSID. Connection works when I set my router to broadcast - I can ping, browse the web, etc. I can't even ping it when it's not broadcasting.
I have checked, and the AR5001 is supported natively (so sayth the web).I'm not lacking any firmware, per the stickied checklist. I can even scan and find my neighbor's (broadcasting SSID) setup. Where do I go next?

slash page comes up fine. KDM greeting page and username selector come up. I can choose a session.
If I choose anything other than 'failsafe' (KDE failsafe, KDE, TWM, IceWM, etc), it accepts my password and then just sits there
If I login via failsafe, then type 'startkde', KDE starts up fine and I get all my windows, virtual desktops, etc.
I also just noticed these installed as well:
Nothing in .xsession-errors
The only thing I could find in /var/log/messages that looked close was this:

I've noticed on other Linux distributions that after boot up and logging off the console screen clears and provides basic information like the Linux distribution and then under it the login prompt. How can I do this for openSUSE 11.3?After I install or reboot I still have all the boot up stuff shown and when I logout after performing some work my commands are still shown. I boot the system to runlevel 3 and barely use the GUI but would like the screen to clear everything after boot up and logging out.

My install of 11.4 has been running perfectly for for several weeks now. But- (always a but) today it started acting up. I cannot log in to any user account including Root after logging out. After a cold boot I can log in again anywhere but after logging out I have to reboot again then I can get back in to any account once. After logging out any attempted log in causes the splash screen to blank for a few seconds and then it comes back with the previous successful user name log in but typing in the password blanks the screen a few seconds again. Clicking on a user account also blanks the screen a few seconds and then it again comes back with the previous log in users name.

I have Open Suse 11.3. I normally use GNOME or KDE sessions. Yesterday I was just thought of trying other Desktop Environments. so I logged out to choose a different session. I tried LXDE and logged back out. After that I found "metacity" in the sessions list and tried it. But no desktop appeared. All I got is black screen a with the mouse pointer/cursor. I waited for quite some time but no desktop, panel, etc loaded or was visible.
I could not figure out how to log off so I hit the start button. After reboot the system automatically chose the same session (It always reuses the last used session) and I was in the same sticky situation. I tried starting in Safe mode as well but still I get the same black screen with just the mouse pointer.

I just recently switched to openSUSE 11.4 from Ubuntu 10.10 so I am very new to this distro and Linux in general. My question is this.Is there a way to make it so that I don't have to keep entering my root password in order for the OS to connect to my wireless?Every time I login the KDE Wallet Service pops up and asks for my passwordI know that it is there for security and what not but it'd be nice if I could just login and the laptop connects to the point without needing a password every time

One very specific issue regarding KDE in OpenSuse 11.3
- when I close the lid of my laptop or get into a screen saver mode, sometimes when the xserver comes back to life it basically goes back to the KDE login menu (log out) without any warning...
I have looked at the detailed settings and power performance management but nothing there.... I am in fact in "don't do anything" mode (power management) but this does not seem to do much.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I've been using OpenSUSE (11.2) and ssh to access my Ubuntu Server (8.04). The problem is that when I give the shutdown command to turn off the server (sudo shutdown -P now), OpenSUSE hangs and I can't close bash and the computer locks up. I then need to turn my OpenSUSE box off by pushing the power button. Any idea what might be causig this?I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question because I don't think this is a bash problem but I wasn't really sure where to ask this question.

Here's a silly question: suppose I want to "grep" an entire directory. Real life example: we reconfigured our mail server to a different IP address, so I needed to search for each occurrence of the original to make sure they'd all been changed.
A simple
Code:
grep -i -l -r "192.168.1.200" *
... works great until it hits a socket. This particular mail server has sockets scattered at random through the directory. When grep hits one of these, it hangs.
I've tried every command line option I can think of it to force it to ignore these sockets, but to no avail. Any of you Grep Gurus out there want to give me a hand?

I have a server which is located in the basement. The server exports a few directories which I mount on my desktop using NFS. From time to time, the connection gets lost. The server is also not always on. I can't change that part, so I worked out a script which notifies me when it's going down, and when it's back up again. It also mounts everything back. However, As soon as I loose the connection, my desktop seems to be gone. KDE doesn't work, but I can use a few applications like Konsole, google-chrome, firefox, stuff like that. But the plasma-desktop around it hangs. As soon as the connection gets back again, everything works. I have this issue only when my desktop is running while I loose the connection to the server. If it's down when I start my desktop, everything works properly. Unless the server comes alive, the nfs directories are mounted and the connection is lost again.

Midnight Commander startup is usually instantaneous, but when the network (eth0) is down, mct takes over a minute to start. This is a known problem. See:#40 (savannah: MC doesn't open if network gateway inaccessible.) (07 Jan 2007)for example. The problem seems to be caused by mc's use of samba. Is there a known solution or circumvention? The above file advises me to "comment out the eth0 interface from the smb.conf "; however, my /etc/samba/smb.conf seems to have no eth0 interface. The "man mc" file mentions that "smbfs" is one of the virtual file systems used internally by mc. I tried reducing the "vfs" timeout in the ".mc/ini" file from 60 to 5, but this had no effect on the startup time.

I have been having a problem with the computer I'm using were it keeps freezing (mouse works, however nothing else does). Usually to get out of it I have to use REISUB signal for a forced reboot. This only used to happen once in a while, but was still annoying. Tried a new video card, new motherboard... neither helped. Other Linux OS had the same issue, Windows XP works ok.Yesterday after running a full update it got worse (first since I installed OpenSuse 11.3 64 last weekend). It appears that Firefox will crash X completely. Rendering got slower and Compiz disabled (not a big deal). Opera also crashes and just by resizing a window or scrolling down on gedit also do the same. I found a few errors on my /var/log/messages log, looks like it's related to the driver that I'm using (noveau). I'm pretty good with Linux, but when it comes to X is the same as speaking another language to me! :-S

I recently downloaded 11.2 to a flash drive and while updating it from online the updates hangs at 48% and the last line reads:
Installing ./rpm/x86_64/libexpat1-32bit-2.0.1-92.4.1.x86_64.rpm: "XML Parser Toolkit"
This fist loading bar is at 100% and total is at 48%.
Is there a way to safely exit this program it appears to be frozen.

I've looked around the threads and can't find this exact problem. I'm on a Compaq Presario F700 running openSUSE 11.3. During boot it hangs in three different places, all of which I can clear up by clicking the mouse buttons or moving my finger on the pad.
The first place it hangs is after: doing fast boot ^[^[^[creating device nodes with udev
The second place is INIT version 2.88 booting
The third place is copying static /dev content.
Like I said, I can get through all three and everything else works great, I just hate having to watch my machine boot to catch these.

Running openSuse 11.3 32 bit clean default KDE install.
When opening documents(Write, Calc, Impress?) in OpenOffice 3.2.1 there is a 7 to 10 second pause between when the document is displayed on screen and when any mouse action takes effect. This is not a document size issue, these are small documents with minimal formatting; one or two pages. Also, the system has ample horsepower and is not resource constrained.
Clicking on a writer.odt file, from within Dolphin, results in the following events: Open Office.Org(ooo) splash screen displays with progress bar zipping across for a couple of seconds. The document appears on screen. For the next 7 - 10 seconds, clicking in the document or clicking ooo menu items or anything else results in nothing happening. Actions outside of ooo work fine. ooo simply freezes for the 7 or so seconds and then everything returns to normal operation.
As a test I tried opening Writer with the default blank document. I started typing immediately after the blank document was displayed. I typed Te and then it froze for several seconds before displaying the final two characters st As before, once past this first few seconds, everything is fine.

Hi,
i have opensuse 11.3 and i am using gnome.
occasionally my firefox hangs. this is sometimes without any reason i see.
the only times i can nearly reproduce this, is when i directly open a PDF with evince. in this case a dialog-window opens, asking whether to download or open using evince. if i choose opening directly with evince, evince opens normally. however, then i am unable to close the dialog window of firefox witch makes firefox unuseable.
when firefox freezes like this, it has a child process called "pxgconf" open (seen in gnome-system-monitor). if i kill this pxgconf, firefox is usable again.
pxgconf seems to be in /usr/lib/libproxy and thus part of libproxy1-config-gnome-0.4.3-1.3.x86_64 package (i've validated all packages using rpm):
Code:
$ rpm -qa | grep libproxy
python-libproxy-0.4.3-1.5.noarch
libproxy1-networkmanager-0.4.3-1.3.x86_64
libproxy1-0.4.3-1.5.x86_64
libproxy1-config-gnome-0.4.3-1.3.x86_64
libproxy1-config-kde4-0.4.3-1.3.x86_64
libproxy1-pacrunner-mozjs-0.4.3-1.3.i586
libproxy1-networkmanager-32bit-0.4.3-1.3.x86_64
libproxy1-32bit-0.4.3-1.5.x86_64
(i don't know how to show package info with rpm, but the package-manager reports they all all from openSUSE-11.3-Oss)
my repos:
Code:
$ zypper lr

I had a problem where my system momentarily hanged for a few seconds. Sometimes when opened a window like Dolphin or when I made a window full screen, sometimes when clicking on the screen while watching a DVD or sometimes when I clicked on a button it just froze for a few seconds and responded.
I have fixed the problem by disabling "Processor Power Managament" in the Bios.
this happenend on my desktop computer. See specs in my signature
