OpenSUSE Install :: Update Hangs At 48% (64 Bit)
Feb 5, 2010
I recently downloaded 11.2 to a flash drive and while updating it from online the updates hangs at 48% and the last line reads:
Installing ./rpm/x86_64/libexpat1-32bit-2.0.1-92.4.1.x86_64.rpm: "XML Parser Toolkit"
This fist loading bar is at 100% and total is at 48%.
Is there a way to safely exit this program it appears to be frozen.

I have managed to install SUSE 11.1 linux on an old ACER laptop. Everything works great unless I use the automatic install update tool. As soon as I do this the computer refuses to boot, it just gets stuck even on safe boot. What is going on ?

Performed:
zypper refresh
zypper update -d
zypper update
[Code].....
After that both systems hang with a black screen, running high CPU as I could hear the CPU fans running at max speed. Waited on both systems, but had to hard reset both.
#1 (using ext3, but mounted as ext2) tried to reboot, but had a LOT of file system issues that had to be resolved (fsck). After that the Video driver had to be reinstalled. Finally the system did reboot, but all icons on all GNOME desktops (~/Desktop) are white and have the ".desktop" extension in their name.
#2 (using ext4) came backup fine, but also required the video driver to be reinstalled. After that the system worked fine.
Still wondering how to resolve the GNOME Desktop Icon issue with #1. Tried to create a new user, but that had the same effect for the icons (launchers) in ~/Desktop. Icons for "Home", "Trash" and connected networks do display the normal names and have a normal image.

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:
SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE
I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?

Ran the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

I've looked around the threads and can't find this exact problem. I'm on a Compaq Presario F700 running openSUSE 11.3. During boot it hangs in three different places, all of which I can clear up by clicking the mouse buttons or moving my finger on the pad.
The first place it hangs is after: doing fast boot ^[^[^[creating device nodes with udev
The second place is INIT version 2.88 booting
The third place is copying static /dev content.
Like I said, I can get through all three and everything else works great, I just hate having to watch my machine boot to catch these.

Have openSUSE 11.1 and (AFAIK) KDE 4 on an older notebook; worked OK for weeks, then booting became a problem and the OS seemed to go to sleep between keystrokes: now the cursor stops blinking, the clock stops running, and nothing happens after clicking a radio button until the mouse moves. Am now 25 minutes into a reboot, hung at "Unmounting file systems" but it also hung for a while when changing run levels. Is this related to the stability problems with 11.1 I've read about? Possibly KDE? Where would I adjust a config to use kde 3.5 rather than 4?

I'm trying to install opensuse using the internet install feature. After the loading linux kernel screen, I see a black screen with a lot of commands/steps. It keeps hanging at the line: [2.202543] [<c0804db73>] kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10And at the same time, caps-lock and scroll lock lights on my keyboard are blinking. What does this mean? what i see is this:

Here's my problem:
New HP Mini 110. Atom N270. 2Gb RAM. 160Gb HDD
I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 Gnome Live from a USB stick. The installation worked well, but after the first reboot, the graphical loader just hangs with the progress bar having moved only a couple of pixels. Only way to recover is to power-off - CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing.
When I press 'Esc' on boot, to display the boot messages, I see the boot hangs at the following point:
"Loading drivers, configuring devices:"
trying again, this time adding the boot option "acpi=off" as recommended in another thread, gets me a little further, but the boot now fails at the following point:
"Set System Time to the current Hardware Clock"
Finally, booting in Failsafe mode gets all the way to a text mode login, but this is hardly a long-term work-around.
Has anyone got openSUSE 11.2 working on an HP Mini 110, or at least seen and solved this problem on another system? I can confirm openSUSE 11.2 works fine on my old Acer Aspire One A150, so I assume this is a specific issue on the HP.

I want to get into the Linux world and trying to install openSuse 11.3 on a separate partition, so I can start getting familiar with it. Installation started and PREPARATION was OK. INSTALLATION WAS OK. While doing Automatic Configuration after a little while the program stops (it hangs). I have to restart the computers by pushing the hdw reset button.
At next reboot, at the partition menu I choose openSUSE option; the program starts and after a while it says that previous installation failed and ask me if I want to retry. I do choose yes, but than again same thing happens - hangs and does not complete automatic configration (which by the way seems to be the last step of the installation). PC is a 2,8GHz, 1GB RAM, Windows OS XPHome and Service PAck3, and now partially loaded openSUSE11.3. OS

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I installed openSUSE 11.4 today and I have a problem. After login, KDE Plasma hangs for about 30sec and I can't do anything. The keyboard and the mouse are working, but if I click, I don't get any response only after about 30sec.
This is a fresh install, 32bit, I'm using only the Oss, Non-Oss and update repositories and the system is up to date.
I have an nvidia 9500M GS graphics card, first I thought it is a driver bug, but I tried both the stable 260.19.44 and the latest 270.41.03 drivers, and was no difference.
I made an another user to try with a clean kde, but the same happened.
I have nothing in my Autostart directory, and I cleaned also the /etc/xdg/autostart dir, leaving there only the pulseaudio related files.

I just upgraded my OpenSuSE 11.2 system to 11.3 and have experienced the following problem:
My hard drive was encrypted beforehand, and after the upgrade(which went smoothly) will no longer decrypt. I type in my passphrase at the prompt, press enter and the start up process never resumes. I am able to access the filesystem from the Rescue System option in the install disk. What's strange is that this worked smoothly on another laptop of mine.

At the end, a message was displayed at the terminal asking me if I want to see the notifications. I pressed "Y" and the system hanged there and then. I had to do a hard reboot. After reboot the system booted fine but hanged at the desktop with no response from the keyboard, mouse, touchpad, etc. The situation's same after many reboots. System boots fine but hangs at the desktop. Screen resolution changed to 800x600.Only power button works! I use it to log off and then do a reboot.

I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.3, everything went fine untill last step : configuring hardware. So my install hangs up at the point "starting sound card" (well it is in french, but it should be this translation in english). My sound card is a classical realtek hd audio card (from a laptop toshiba x200). In the terminal(/dev/tty1) I can see that it is hanging at Starting Yast2. I had no pb with my previous installs regarding the sound card (with openSuse 11.2 and earlier). what to do to have this step working, or at least have the sound card not started at this point.

I got a new ASUS EeePC 1015PEM with Windows 7 with the intention to install OpenSuse 11.3 onto it for having a dual booting netbook with enough disk space.I'm installing from an external DVD drive, the checksums of the ISO were ok as well. However, the OpenSuse installer fails at starting up after selecting the action. It hangs, no matter what menu entry I chose, at "loading basic drivers", forever.Because this isn't necessarily an unknown problem I've tried some of the predefined kernel options of the main installer menu. Then I tried some manually entered kernel boot options that helped me in some other installations:
acpi=off, apm=off, CPUFreq=noNone of them seem to have an effect on the installers behaviorI hope that there is people who managed to solve this problem with an actual EeePC model... because I really don't know what I could any more. It's kind of frustrating to not even get past the kernel launch I haven't tried any other distros installation discs, but I don't even intend to. I want OpenSuse because I'm running it on our firms machines as well and don't like shifting between systems.

I have an old laptop (asus M6 ca. 6 year old) with dual boot linux windows. Untill Saturday linux=suse 11.0, Saturday I have made an upgrade to opensuse11.4.
I have boot up/down many times almot everything was working properly except the battery status ... I have thought .. "I'll think about it later".
Then out of the blue on sunday my laptop does not boot anymore, the boot hangs. I then have realized taht the failsafe boot was working properly.... ok I have remembered the wrong battery signal and tried the normal boot + acpi=off .. and .. it boots!
OK, the acpi is the problem. I have never made an update of my BIOS (this means it is now old), but I do not really want to update it now. with suse 11.0 the acpi was working properly, I have never have touched the acpi boot option and I had all acpi functionality working (battery, suspend .. etc)
how to let acpi work (at least for the main features .. batetry, fan speed, HT ... etc)?
It can be that the old kernel boot was using some "specific flags", (an installation is cleverer than an upgrade ..?!?!) but unfortunatelly it looks to me that nothing has remained from the old installation .. so I do not know ...
