View 9 RepliesAbout 40% of the time when I try to open Dolphin (clicking the widget on the taskbar) I get launch feedback but it never opens Dolphin. If I then click it again, this time it will open. Where can I look in some log to find what error might be happening?

But it hangs on opening PDF files (Import of picture from PDF works fine, but that's not what I need). I tried with a lot of PDF from a lot of different sources.
I added the line "resolution = 200" in the .gscan2pdf file to solve the issue where scanned PDF won't save.
I tried to reinstall the package with Synaptic without more success.
Here the output with debug flag :
I'm using xarchive and I have unrar-3.7.8.pet installed. Normal rar files open without problem. Tried opening a password-encrypted rar file and it hangs everytime.

When opening documents(Write, Calc, Impress?) in OpenOffice 3.2.1 there is a 7 to 10 second pause between when the document is displayed on screen and when any mouse action takes effect. This is not a document size issue, these are small documents with minimal formatting; one or two pages. Also, the system has ample horsepower and is not resource constrained.
Clicking on a writer.odt file, from within Dolphin, results in the following events: Open Office.Org(ooo) splash screen displays with progress bar zipping across for a couple of seconds. The document appears on screen. For the next 7 - 10 seconds, clicking in the document or clicking ooo menu items or anything else results in nothing happening. Actions outside of ooo work fine. ooo simply freezes for the 7 or so seconds and then everything returns to normal operation.
As a test I tried opening Writer with the default blank document. I started typing immediately after the blank document was displayed. I typed Te and then it froze for several seconds before displaying the final two characters st As before, once past this first few seconds, everything is fine.
I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.
I am having KDE and also gnome desktops. DOlphin file manager was working properly but suddenly now it stopped working in KDE. If I click the icon it just swings near the mouse for some time and nothing comes. Previously immediately after I click it used to come. But in gnome it still opens.

Does anyone know the cause - and how to stop it before it fills my HDD?
How do I edit a file (config file, etc.) in KWrite (instead of VI) from the bash shell?I can't seem to "see" certain files using Dolphin and the only way I can locate/see them is using the shell but I'm a complete VI newb and would rather use KWrite for the moment.

Is there any way to stop Dolphin from creating .directory files in all my directories when I am viewing hidden files?
I am pressing Alt+. to view hidden files in a directory.
Other file managers seem to do it fine.
In Dolphin i have build an ssh-Connection to my homeserver. Now when I edit an file, the save to the remote location occures only when the editor is closing. This is for webdevelopment etc. not practical.Which alternatives are possible?(under Windows i love WinSCP )

View 9 Replies View RelatedI did a clean installation of KDE 4.4 Alien bob`s packages and when I open the dolphin, for example, appears this error:
The icons and directories are all on blank...
Whenever I go into the folders they're stored in and try to open them. They close so fast, in fact, that it's only after switching over to Konqueror that I found the files simply will not open. VLC/Kaffeine appears to load for a few seconds and then closes again without any indication of a bug or problem - it just doesn't work.
Been trying to sort this out for the last two days now, but I'm a complete simpleton with computers/linux and don't know anything about using the terminal, etc. (I can't even install stuff without using webpins) but now I'm stuck and searching around for people with similar problems really hasn't turned up anything that is familiar or understandable.
All of a sudden, Dolphin is identifying .xls files as "OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)." I searched for xls in Configure desktop, file associations and it still appears as application-vnd.ms-excel. It does not appear as x-ole-storage.
Other spreadsheets (ods, xlsx) are still identified correctly and open automatically in the proper program. This is a new behavior, and I'm assuming it has to do with something I updated in Yast. I'm using KDE 4.6.2 under 11.4.
As a workaround, I added the .xls extension to the file association for x-ole-storage, which allows Dolphin to open the file automatically, but it still asks me to install software to handle the file type. I answer no and then the file opens in Libre Office.
Before adding .xls to the file association, I tried to get this to happen automatically by going through the open with other application menu and checking always use this application. This had no effect.
So I have a large collection of VCDs (they used to be very popular and cheap here before DVDs became popular - basically just Data CD with a specific file structure) which I was transferring to my harddrive for easier viewing.
I stopped a few months ago and wanted to do some more today, but find that I can't access them anymore. The VCD is mounted ok, and I can see the root folder, but when I try and go into any folders, Dolphin hangs, the message log shows this over and over again:
Code:
I have tried with 2 different DVD drives (both IDE, on different channels), and confirmed the disk works fine when accessed from Windows on the same hardware, so the problem must be with Fedora.

I cannot open .xls of .ods documents. Something I have altered recently may have done this. If I right click open with options I cannot find Open office. pdf files are opening with Okular as default. When opening some .doc files LibreOffices starts and directly closes . The same problem occurs (for the same files) with LibreOffice from the unstable repository. When I go back to the LibreOffice version (3.3.1) shiped with 11.4. everything works fine. Hence, if you have problems with some .doc files downgrade to 3.3.1.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.l0 installed on my laptop. I recently install the KDE desktop from the Software Center. Today, I noticed something strange. I tried to move a file to the trash when I got this error message: "The trash has reached its maximum size! Cleanup the trash manually." I don't have any files in the trash. I went back to Gnome, and was able to delete the file. I opened up Dolphin while still in Gnome, and couldn't delete anything, so I know that this isn't a KDE problem

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust wondering why Kubuntu 10.10 has a file manager that by default doesn't show the previews of video files? Or did I do something wrong during the install? Does extra software need to be installed to view video files as thumbnails in Dolphin? Or, am I doing something wrong and everyone else who uses Dolphin after installing Kubuntu gets thumbnail previews of their video files? See the attached picture showing a preview of a graphics file. Maybe I'm expecting too much because Nautilus (in Ubuntu), Thunar (in Xubuntu) and Windows Explorer (Win XP/Vista/7) all show thumbnail previews of video files by default.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I am copying from DVD to my comp - Dolphin copies some files and directories and some did not. I have to check what was copied and what was ommited and fix the bad copying by copying again. The DVD is okay, it is perfectly readable. There is also plenty of memory around (8 GB). The behavior is new in Jessie, Dolphin in Wheezy used to work flawlessly.
I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?

1. Server with ldap for authentication and autofs maps
2. Client machines have home directories on this server (nfs3) these machines also have some 'shared' directories on the same server (nfs4)
Now if I use a terminal I can always create files in the shared directories (subject to the relevant permissions) - I can also always save files in OO and the like. The problem is that Dophin sometimes has the create greyed out and sometimes it doesn't. So now I am at a loss as to why. This is 11.2 with kde 4.4.3 btw
Trying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..
Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.
I just moved from Ubuntu to Debian, managed to get the WiFi printer working, installed flash player etc. Just seemed to have trouble opening files over the LAN, is there a firewall setting I need to set. Files work fine if i copy them to the desktop and open them from there but not over the LAN. I have looked on the web with no luck.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running 9.04 jaunty. I made a file in gimp and saved it as .xcf. I want it to be a pdf file, so I try opening it with open office drawing, but it keeps opening it with the word processor instead. The word processor starts the file if I do a right-click 'open with' on the file on my desktop, and even if I use open from the file menu in drawing itself. I'm wondering what to do to get drawing to open this file. Is it that .xcf is not supported by drawing?
