Kde 4.3.1 started booting slow, real slow, real slow.. and logging out real slow. I tried un-instsalling everything since my last update. I then tried moving to the kde 4.3.5. Same problem. Any clues or should I just do reinstall? I am running a ACCER laptop Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 550 @ 2.00GHz. I have been using Linux for 10yrs.
View 5 RepliesI've noticed on other Linux distributions that after boot up and logging off the console screen clears and provides basic information like the Linux distribution and then under it the login prompt. How can I do this for openSUSE 11.3?After I install or reboot I still have all the boot up stuff shown and when I logout after performing some work my commands are still shown. I boot the system to runlevel 3 and barely use the GUI but would like the screen to clear everything after boot up and logging out.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have 2 machines (quad core intel i5) running suse 11.2. They were clean installs and both suffer from this problem on around 50% of boot-ups. Other times, the system boots quickly and is fine.
Basically, one of the CPU's gets hammered to 100% (according to KDE system monitor) for around 10 minutes after boot up. Although the other three CPU's seem mostly idle, the system is very slow, to the point of being unusable until suddenly the system recovers and runs normally.
I've looked at 'top' and the KDE system monitor and both show no process taking more than a few % of the CPU. So it is a mystery as to what is taking up so much CPU and why it does it some days and not others !
One other thing, if you try to run virtualbox during this time, it (eventually) says that the kernel drives are not loaded - so possibly the kernel is stuck loading drivers. Infact, from dmesg, I can see that the system is still booting but other than the extended time stamps, the only obvious difference between a good boot and a bad one seems to be the line :

Im trying to install ubuntu studio 11.04on my new dell. it finishes and boot,just incredibly slow. maybe 10 min to load after login. im able to update, i thought maybe it would fix it with driver updates. still nothing. the only thing i did so far was "pci=noacpi". and that did nothing.

dell support thread was a damn joke, i m trying to put ubuntu on a new dell inspiron m5010 using wubi. everything was going great untill after the install on reboot the login screen takes 5 min to fully load. after i log in, it takes another like 5-10 min to fully load. i already tried pci=noacpi that did nothing. i tried loading in ubuntu classic (with no effects) that helped some, but still slow. any thoughts?

I've been searching the forums for any posts that cover my problem, but most of the booting problems I've found are different from mine.Anywho, the situation:ell laptop, 2 partitions, first is Windows XP, second is Ubuntu Karmic.Whenever I turn on my computer the first loading screen that shows up (is this the BIOS? If I choose anything other than 'failsafe' (KDE failsafe, KDE, TWM, IceWM, etc), it accepts my password and then just sits there
If I login via failsafe, then type 'startkde', KDE starts up fine and I get all my windows, virtual desktops, etc.

Since update yesterday to kde4.3.5 I notice this am - after logging in with password the loading desktop stalls. In cat /var/log/messages I grabbed part that seems possible.

My install of 11.4 has been running perfectly for for several weeks now. But- (always a but) today it started acting up. I cannot log in to any user account including Root after logging out. After a cold boot I can log in again anywhere but after logging out I have to reboot again then I can get back in to any account once. After logging out any attempted log in causes the splash screen to blank for a few seconds and then it comes back with the previous successful user name log in but typing in the password blanks the screen a few seconds again. Clicking on a user account also blanks the screen a few seconds and then it again comes back with the previous log in users name.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Open Suse 11.3. I normally use GNOME or KDE sessions. Yesterday I was just thought of trying other Desktop Environments. so I logged out to choose a different session. I tried LXDE and logged back out. After that I found "metacity" in the sessions list and tried it. But no desktop appeared. All I got is black screen a with the mouse pointer/cursor. I waited for quite some time but no desktop, panel, etc loaded or was visible.
I could not figure out how to log off so I hit the start button. After reboot the system automatically chose the same session (It always reuses the last used session) and I was in the same sticky situation. I tried starting in Safe mode as well but still I get the same black screen with just the mouse pointer.
I just recently switched to openSUSE 11.4 from Ubuntu 10.10 so I am very new to this distro and Linux in general. My question is this.Is there a way to make it so that I don't have to keep entering my root password in order for the OS to connect to my wireless?Every time I login the KDE Wallet Service pops up and asks for my passwordI know that it is there for security and what not but it'd be nice if I could just login and the laptop connects to the point without needing a password every time
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.
I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.
After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.
My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?
Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.
I am currently running all my applications off a HD as I was unable to install the grub bootloader on my ocz pci express card (grub won't install on the pci express card as it is a raid0 array). I would like to use the HD for backup only and run everything off the ocz card - with the exception of booting (which is unfortunate but I didn't manage to make the pci express card boot). How is it possible to tell suse during the installation to create the /boot on the HD and the rest on the pci express card and also to allocate the remainder of the HD as empty storage area??
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Opensuse 11.3 on a separate partition to vista on my Acer 5115. It runs fine but the GRUB boot loader failed to show the Vista OS. I tried to add it by editing menu.As far as I can see (and I don't have much experience with these things) the Vista OS is there, on sda5, but doesn't boot correctly because the winload.exe is in the wrong directory. Why the sdax numbers are all rearranged is a mystery too, but I have reinstalled vista several times so that could be why.I don't have a vista recovery cd (wasn't given one), is there any way to fix this within opensuse (which works fine)?

After upgrade to openSUSE 11.3-64 the figures dropped to about 25% of the previous values. After upgrade to KDE 4.5 and plasmoid-networkmanagement the initial values did not change but the average value dropped after about 30 seconds to ~ 15 kB/s. Approach so far:
1. The motherboard's (A780GM-LE) build in LAN (Realtek RLT8111DL) was originally detected by openSUSE 11.3 as the Realtek RLT8169 and kernel module r8169 installed. This was replaced by the latest module r8168-8.019.00 from Realtek.
2. After kernel update to Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64 the plasmoid-networkmanagement was replace by NetworkManager-kde4. This improved flow with,

ave : ~ 80 kB/s
I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
I'm installing opensuse 11.2 x64 on my machine.I have win7 installation so I'm making it dual boot.The problem is that the installation is extremely slow. I've started it 20 min ago and it is still at 3% in preparing disks part of the setup.The installation is standard (no shrinking or etc) - I'm installing it on a separate empty partition on my raid volume.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWith the upgrade to 11.3 x86_64 I was very disappointed to find that the time it took to log in to KDE once I entered my password skyrocketed. On 11.2, what used to be a speedy two seconds before I would see the desktop has now turned into 30 seconds, or more sometimes: today it was closer to 45.
disable powerdevil or to disable the KDED modules, both located in the service manager.
Disabling powerdevil does bring my login time back down to where it was in 11.2. I have several questions now: Powerdevil is described as a "laptop power management daemon" in the service manager. Is it truly only for laptops? What features does powerdevil provide? If I disable it will my CPU frequency scaling and other power management features still work?
Not much else to say. I'd say it takes at least a minute before I get to the login screen. After that it runs fine and most of the previous problems I've had since upgrading have resolved themselves. why it's taking so long to boot up?

The client machine would boot, drag the kernel off tftp, then start the installation from which was an apache alias to a mounted ISO of the 11.2 DVD. It worked quickly and easily. That is the internationally recognised Condition for Vista to perform its main function: sh1tting the bed. Configuration lost.
Now, in a couple hours of searching and experimenting, I can't find guidance on how to get that same setup back. SDBXE boot installation - openSUSE covers 90% of it, but I don't want the installation to connect to a repo and download new files - soundly killing my internet connection downloading files that are already on the install ISO I'm serving.I want it to find all it needs in the served directory holding the ISO contents.My pxelinux.cfg/default :

I am not the most computer savy, so bear with me. I have opensuse installed on my usb hard drive and recently had a windows crash that caused me to lose my opensuse boot menu/grub. Before the crash I had to have the usb drive plugged in in order to boot to windows or opensuse or I would get an error at startup....... I would like to avoid this. Is there anyway to make it so that when I turn on my computer It boots directly to windows, and if I want to go to opensuse then I can plug in my usb drive and manually boot to usb from my boot menu? I would run these two together on my computer but I share this computer and having to have my usb drive plugged in all the time kind of made them mad. So I guess my question is two fold..... Is this possible? And if so can I go into my hard drive through windows and place something in there to allow me to boot to it since my grub is back to the origional windows boot or do I need to use a live cd to access opensuse and do it that way?.

I was trying to install a dual boot with OS X and this is what it told me:
"delete partition /dev/sda1"
As far as I can tell, this means it wants to delete OS X. On my mac's terminal, the linux partition is "disk0s3". Am I correct to assume that I should be custom partitioning in the OpenSUSE installer and have it create all its partitions out of sda3 only?
I want to install a minimal version of linux (probably oS 11.4) onto a partitioned 1TB USB drive to serve as a standalone, bootable restore mechanism for a couple of machines.
First off, is this feasible?
Second, how do I go about it? I was able to install the system to the drive but how do I make that drive bootable? So far, I can't even get it to boot from the grub menu on the first internal hard drive as the system complains loudly about not being able to read disk descriptors and such. I tried the various boot spec (chainloader, menulist, etc) with no luck. Do I need to disconnect all the internal drives then install as if it were the only hard drive in the machine with the DVD reader?
I am assuming that I need some sort of bootstrap code in the MBR of the USB drive to get started but I'm a bit lost here and would appreciate any input, especially from some one who has tried this, before I spend anymore time on it.
