CentOS 5 :: System Freezes After Screen Saver?
Dec 17, 2009The system freezes after the screen saver. 'Blank screen' is used. I can't do anything, so I reboots the machine from another terminal. I am using CentOS 5.4 x86_64.

May 6, 2011I did a fresh install of 11.04 a week ago and I had my screen saver set to run 'Floating Feet' after 15 minutes idle time. Twice I've left my computer, and returned, clicked the mouse, and found my computer frozen on the screen saver. I was able to recover once by hitting the power button, which brought up the shut down/restart options and normal desktop. It hasn't happened since I turned off the screen saver, so I'll just leave it that way until a solution arises.

Dec 1, 2009My Gnome screensaver doesn't work, although it once did.
I have searched for a solution to this problem but no luck. I am running FC 11 and out-of-the-box gnome. At first the screensaver worked normally, shutting off the screen after 5 mins. Now it does not do so. I found the following command line suggestion in the forums, and it looks like it may point to a problem -- the screensaver is inactive, but how to make it active? I may be misunderstanding the term inactive, of course. Logically, the screensaver would have to be inactive if I am typing a command.

Just in case the screensaver really was not running, I tried this command (which I found in another post):
But the query returns the same thing as before.
The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is that using the "appearances" background facility I added a couple dozen pictures that I thought I might use as screen background. Not long after that I discovered that my screen did not go black after 5 mins as expected. Not sure this correlation has any causal meaning, however. I then tried various things, finally returning to the plain (blue) default. That seemed to fix it for a short while, then after a couple of days, the bad or non-behavior returned -- the screensaver does not work.
(update -- I removed all the extra background pics and it makes no difference.)
My system runs all the time, but I don't want the screen to be on all the time.
General :: Possible To Keep The Screen-saver But Disable The Rest Of The Power Management System?
Feb 17, 2010I have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway,sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later.Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?

Dec 2, 2009If I remain 'connected' (with the KVM) to the linux machine the gnome screen saver cuts in and the system remains 'as is' until 'woken up' with the mouse or keyboard. However, if I switch to another machine using the KVM, within a short time (maybe even minute or two) the linux machine goes dead. Now it has not crashed, as I can log in from a remote machine and do anything I need from a terminal, but the machine seems not to respond. I can't even use ctrl-alt-fn to switch to a console screen.
I initially tried entering telinit 3 from a remote machine but it made no apparent difference. However, if after telinit 3 I then killed the Xorg process and later issued a telinit 5 the X server restarted, but with a curious black 'notch' at the top of the screen. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card. I am now adding the backtrace from Xorg.0.log. It seems that when the KVM switches to another machine for more than a very short time the X server crashes.

CentOS 5 :: 5.4 Wont Return From "screen Saver"?
Dec 7, 2009After the 5.4 OS sits with no user activity for 15 or so minutes, the screen goes black. This is anticipated, but no key combination seems to bring it back to life.
I discovered that Ctr+Alt+BackSpace ends the login session and takes you to the login menu. This is better than nothing but it isnt exactly what i had in mind.
Does anyone know how the key combination to return to the current user session, or how to disable the screen entirely.

Mar 16, 2010Don't know if this is a coincidence, but the other day we had a power cut and my laptop went off. When I tried to reboot it got to the ubuntu start up screen, but when it tries to get to the "desk top" screen it all goes blue and black flashes. I have XP and Vista on the same machine and these both start up ok

Jul 15, 2011The system frequently freezes the screen. The mouse is still moveable but there is no reaction on any click. Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought
I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?

Sep 10, 2010I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and it worked fine but recently I'm getting the following message -

This message comes with a black screen and then no key stroke works and everything totally freezes. then I've to force restart using power switch. This message appears when I'm using internet. I'm using pppoe broadband connection. Without internet it works fine. I'm getting the same prob in Linux Mint 9. I've googled for this problem and almost everywhere it is said that this message appears in booting time and after a few moments everything becomes quite ok but my problem doesn't match with them. I don't get this message in booting time. I get this message when I'm on internet.

Jul 17, 2011Every once in a while when I turn on my computer it freezes on the purple screen after the screen where you choose the operating system. When this happens the keyboard doesn't work and I have to hold the power button. Also I think this might be connected to the problem I had when I was running ubuntu from the live cd, which was freezing after choosing the option of "trying" the OS before installing. I'm using an HP Dv7-3112sa and am running the default 64bit ubuntu from the website.

Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.
The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!
I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.

Jan 27, 2010I recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?

Aug 23, 2010What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
Hardware :: Centos 5.5 System Hangs / Freezes Up More Frequently - Workaround This?
Aug 10, 2010I recently installed centos 5.5 on a new system, details below. All worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the system froze up. No network access, no keyboard/mouse, blank screen. Had to reboot. Happened again about a week later. Then started happening every couple of days, then daily, and today it happened three times.
I see nothing unusual in any of the logs. The freezing does not seem to be correlated with any particular activity. Happened in both gnome and kde. While it's up, everything seems to work fine. I looked on the intel site for a new driver for this chipset but didn't find a linux version. I tried different versions of this same kernel (PAE, centosplus etc) but have not tried an older kernel.
I installed memtest86 (with yum) but when I try to start it from grub, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reboots. Can't get it to start. Tried a bootable memtest86 cd that worked before (couple of years ago) and it wouldn't boot from it (bios is set to boot first from cd). Maybe this is a strong hint?
My next steps are to burn a new cd of memtest86 and try that. And/or to start removing ram to see if any of them are the culprit. In the meantime I'm asking if any of you have had similar problems with this architecture, or have other suggestions of things I could try. I don't have pieces of hardware lying around that I can easily swap in and out, unfortunately. If all this fails I'll try FC13. Any advice on whether or not you think that might fix the problem would be appreciated, before I go to the trouble.code...

Apr 17, 2011I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:
openSUSE 11.3
Kernel-pae 2.6.38.2-4.1 from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.
The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

Nov 4, 2010i'm running 10.10 now, but had this problem since 9.04.whenever i watch a program on hulu or a lengthy videos video, my screensaver turns on even though i have it turned off. the only way i can fix this is by killing the screensaver process in system monitor.

Jun 30, 2010I have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.
