I love it but I have a problem that someone can hopefully help me troubleshoot. The system intermittently crashes, the screen freezes and nothing works except the mouse pointer which can be moved but not used. Is there a way for me to diagnose this

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was running 10.04 with no problems. Upgraded. I may or may not have lost power before the upgrade was finished. Now my system locks out the keyboard and mouse on the login screen...nocapslock light or anything, but I know it's still running because the clock at the bottom increments once per minute. Booting safemode does not help, it simply hangs at some point on the scrolling black screen instead.I can boot 9.04, which is still installed on another partition, just fine.Is there any way I can boot to a terminal and try running apt-get again, to see if I can fix whatever's wrong?

I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have xscreensaver installed and configured. I have it set to turn on after 5 minutes, cycle every 5 minutes. I have acpi setup to blank my monitor after 10 minutes and power off after 15 minutes. The problem is, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't figured it out. The service from what I can tell only runs when the screen saver is active. So checking ps -e doesn't tell me much, and since there isn't a true problem it is not recording anything in the logs.

When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).
is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .
Recently upgraded Karmic to Lucid (32 bit system).System freezes/locks-up intermittently (seems to be associated with Firefox). Only option is to power off.Have seen other (very recent) posts, many unanswered and none of use.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of trying to move my files from a windows 2003 install over to fedora 12 using the Fedora 12 x86_64 Live image.
After some initial problems with burning the ISO image (had to enable disk-at-once to get rid of I/O buffer errors). And a GPF in the xor_sse2 module while building my software raid 5 arrays (forced to reboot, unable to stop or restart the array) I finally managed to create a single LVM volume group ontop of it all.
Initially I ran some tests on the raid volume and wrote a large 100GB file filled with zeroes all over it to be sure that it was functioning normally. After that I proceeded to copy files over from the NTFS volume to the LVM volume. which resulted in lots of errors on my terminal and complete loss of the entire filesystem. Even a simple ls -l / resulted in "Bus Error" although the system still kept running for a few seconds, until it finally froze and spontaneously rebooted. Since then I ran memtest to be sure my memory is fine, and tried alternative ways of mounting the volumes, and copy methods. Each attempt resulted in either a complete freeze or instant reboot. After 6 reboots, I managed to copy 20GB out of 490GB. Obviously this will take forever this way.
/var/log/messages is unhelpful. There are a bunch of cryptic messages regarding ATA bus errors (mostly CRC errors it seems) and soft resets when the LVM volume get mounted, but everything functions fine until I touch the NTFS volume.

Don't know if this is a coincidence, but the other day we had a power cut and my laptop went off. When I tried to reboot it got to the ubuntu start up screen, but when it tries to get to the "desk top" screen it all goes blue and black flashes. I have XP and Vista on the same machine and these both start up ok

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe system frequently freezes the screen. The mouse is still moveable but there is no reaction on any click. Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought
I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?
I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and it worked fine but recently I'm getting the following message -

This message comes with a black screen and then no key stroke works and everything totally freezes. then I've to force restart using power switch. This message appears when I'm using internet. I'm using pppoe broadband connection. Without internet it works fine. I'm getting the same prob in Linux Mint 9. I've googled for this problem and almost everywhere it is said that this message appears in booting time and after a few moments everything becomes quite ok but my problem doesn't match with them. I don't get this message in booting time. I get this message when I'm on internet.
Every once in a while when I turn on my computer it freezes on the purple screen after the screen where you choose the operating system. When this happens the keyboard doesn't work and I have to hold the power button. Also I think this might be connected to the problem I had when I was running ubuntu from the live cd, which was freezing after choosing the option of "trying" the OS before installing. I'm using an HP Dv7-3112sa and am running the default 64bit ubuntu from the website.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?

I using/running: Ubuntu 10.10, 64bit version (clean installation) Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz (not overclocked) 6GB RAM Nvidia GTX260 Nvidia proprietary drivers 1TB Western Digital HD (32MB cache) Now, the problem: A while ago, I started experiencing intermittent system freezes that would last for 2 or 3 minutes and happen about once every 45 to 75 minutes.
The Gnome System Monitor (GSM) would show 100% CPU utilization, but top, htop, and conky only show about 11% usage. I pulled up the process list in GSM. However, I had issues, for the obvious reason, when bringing it up when the CPU was spiking. Even when I could, it only showed the usual suspects (Firefox, Deluge, Ktorrent, and Xorg) running the high single digits. This was backed up in top, htop, and conky. I also checked the RAM, but usage was down around 25%, with nothing in the swap.
I checked the messages log, but there was nothing there. Nor in dmesg. At least not that my limited Linux admin skills could find. The freeze just happened, so I've attached them in their entirety. I've come to suspect that Python is the cause. It happens most often when I have Ktorrent or Deluge going. I used to use Deluge, but moved to Ktorrent to test if Deluge itself was the problem. They're both written in python though, and both seem to cause the slowdown. It also happens when other python-based programs are running, such as the updater, but not as much or as bad. Things I've tried to fix the problem:
- Clean install (first time in over 18 months)
- Updated Nvidia driver by adding a repository
- Updated Deluge by adding a repository
- Enabled backports.
- Gave my PC the finger
This is driving me nuts. If it was just BT clients, I'd only run those at nights, but it's also parts of Ubuntu itself that relies on python, which I really think is the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

When I swap my left alt with my left win key using the gnome keyboard layout options, the swap only works intermittently. I have an aluminum Apple keyboard with no numpad. No matter what layout options I choose, I can't seem to get it working.I also have the same setup on my laptop and work desktop and it works without issue. I've ensured my .Xmodmap doesn't exist.When I say "works intermittently" I mean when I'm trying to use "alt+b, alt+f" navigation in emacs or bash, it doesn't work but if I click around a bit then try again, it works. Also, I use alt+arrows to switch workspaces and that always works
View 7 Replies View RelatedWell, turns out that when I rebooted into the installed system a user setup utility launched, but now whenever I try to log in as me, X crashes and GDM starts up again, telling me to relog in.
Now it's the case of "A setup utility launches and I set up my user, only to try to log in and get kicked in the face by GDM, having done all that work for nothing".
I'm a bit of a Linux novice but have taken the plunge and got a old Dell machine set up with Fedora 13, it works fine for the most part. If I can get it to boot. Whenever I start it up the tri-color boot bars go across the screen but seem to freeze at various times. Sometimes right as its getting started, other times it will go all the way across but never actually do anything. I can sometimes get it to work if I get into GRUB and try a different kernel version. Is there anyway to pull up a more informative boot screen or some other way of figuring out whats causing the freeze instead of just watching the progress bar?

Can someone tell my why every time I try to use 7z it freezes my system? I can't move my mouse, I can't type, I can't kill my xsession. I then restart my system and everything returns to normal. When I try to use 7z my system again freezes.

I have updated the bios to the latest version.
When I startup Firefox Fedora's screen freezes. The only way to restore is to power off and on!
I've tried yum remove/install but the problem persists.
