OpenSUSE Install :: Using Ubuntu 10.10 Default Fonts In 11.3?

Oct 19, 2010

Has anyone tried the cool font that comes default in Ubuntu 10.10 on openSUSE 11.3? Although I hate Ubuntu, I loved the font and the interface is really clean.

OpenSUSE :: 3.2 Fonts Get Loaded To /usr/local/share/fonts?

Feb 23, 2010

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.

I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

Ubuntu :: Fonts So Damn Small By Default?

Aug 18, 2010

I'm 24 with excellent vision, and I'll be the first to say that DAMN Kubuntu's default font size is entirely too small! Does anybody else feel this way? By simply forcing 96 DPI it helps out quite a bit - but it's confusing that this wouldn't be enabled by default to begin with.

OpenSUSE Install :: Microscopic Fonts During Install

Feb 12, 2010

I want to try Opensuse after trying a few different distro's and in a way or another i haven't found what will keep me using it.But there is one thing i find weird,I'm using a Bravia lcd 32 as monitor connected directly via a direct HDMI cable (no adapters) from my ATI Radeon 4890.The problem is that the fonts during install in all the distro's i tried are not just tiny...but microscopic,to the point is unreadable.Think about a 4 words phrase as big as a dot ( "." ).I don't really want to use my old lcd 19 to install and then connect again my TV (as i had to do for all the other distro's).Is there anyway i can fix that without doing all that ?As of now i liked what i saw in this forums and your support and wiki, and found already that there is a solution for problems that were keeping me from staying on those distros (read multimedia problems, lack of support, compatibility and so on) so hopefully this will be the last i try for a while (experimenting is nice

Slackware :: Firefox Default Fonts Will Not Display On Webpages?

Feb 12, 2010

Recently I was creating an image in GIMP when I needed to add a new font. I went to my mounted XP drive and copied the file I wanted over into /usr/X11R6/share/fonts/TTF then I went to the font installer as root and installed the font system wide. After that I reloaded GIMP and the font was available. A little while later I went to browse the internet and when I loaded up firefox, it showed a properly formatted and spaced page with no text on it at all. If I highlighted a line, the invisible text would copy to the clipboard properly and I could read it that way. I figured it might've been a just a FF issue, but when I loaded up Seamonkey, I wound up with the same problem. I'm using Firefox 3.0.16 and Seamonkey 2.0.1. I tried going into the preferences and changing the default font, but no matter what I change it to, it doesn't fix it. Slack 1.2 running kernel 2.6.27.31-smp. I use slapt-get to stay up to date and as far as I can tell i have the latest patches and pkgs.

Code:

bash-3.1$ fc-cache -rv
/usr/share/fonts/OTF: caching, new cache contents: 23 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/TTF: caching, new cache contents: 91 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/Type1: caching, new cache contents: 64 fonts, 0 dirs

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub-set-default Gone Missing 11.3

Jun 13, 2011

Starting a few days ago, I am unable to leave my kde session using the "leave" facilities. On a fresh login, I can select the leave button and it pops up the menu as per normal. However, whatever I select (logout, shutdown or reboot) nothing happens. I cannot now select the leave button. I click it but nothing happens.

I checked the log messages and see an error posted by kdm that grub-set-default is not in the path. I issue a find and, yeps, no grub-set-default. A week or two ago, I uninstalled CUPS. Went to make tea, came back to find a huge list of stuff being deleted. I had to abort it and spent a long while re-installing loads of stuff, for instance, even Mozzila. Can't find where to get grub-set-default so anybody know where to get it?

Ubuntu :: Over 1500 Fonts - Move Them To My /usr/share/fonts Folder

Jul 3, 2011

I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.

How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?

OpenSUSE :: Lost KDE 4.3 Default Desktop Window - New 11.2 Install

Nov 15, 2009

This is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".

How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.

OpenSUSE Install :: Difference Between Default And Desktop Kernels?

Jan 9, 2010

Is there a description of the features and differences between the Desktop and Default kernels? Did "Desktop" arrive with 11.2 and 2.6.31? I did not notice it at first. I loaded 11.2 on a desktop machine and both default and desktop kernels were loaded to system, with Desktop set as default in grub. I have been working thru several "strange" behaviors ever since loading 11.2. At the top of my list has been the ability to shutdown the system from remote logins. I normally connect to the system via a Xwindows package (Xmanager). X works fine and I could shutdown via the GUI (Application Launcher - Leave-Shutdown).

When connected via a remote ssh link, either from a windows machine or a different linux machine, attempts to shutdown (shutdown -H now) send the expected messages, close the remote connections but leave the system still powered on but in a no-remote-connectivity state. When I upgraded to KDE 4.3.4 following the Forum Repository guidelines, I could no longer shutdown via the GUI. In searching about, I found that the Desktop kernel was running. Changed grub, rebooted under default, shutdown under GUI works again. So, for starters, I am trying to decide which kernel environment (default or desktop) should be my target for continuing to work thru issues.

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub - Not Changing Anything From Default - Error 22

Feb 11, 2011

I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Suse 11.3, installing suse second on a seperate 80GB drive. After a ridiculous amount of faffing around due to my dvd writer essentially not working, finally get suse installed, messing with GRUB settings in an attempt to preserve Windows' boot manager, restart; GRUB error 22.

Go through the whole process again, this time accepting the use of grub and not changing anything from default - exactly the same response. None of the tens of boot disks/utilities I've tried will allow me into suse to have a look at the grub config. There are no applications for windows that will allow me to write to ext3.
