I'm working on making a system in suse studio, but I can't get into the GUI through normal means (as in using the live DVD) because it gives me a console. When i type "startx" i get an error based on signal 11 (or something)
I type kdm, and nothing happens. What should I do?
(p.s, this is with the USB raw image "burned" on. The DVD needs me to use no APIC)

Installing fluxbox is straight forward with zypper install fluxbox what about gnome and lxde? How will the default application be affected e.g. when I login into KDE, video is defaulted to smplayer If gnome/lxde is installed will the default app change with the desktop environment or will one app be defaulted to all desktop environment?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just recently reinstalled openSUSE 11.3 last night with the GNOME desktop. Since I'm starting fresh again, I'd like to set up my System as flawless as possible.
So, my question is stated in the Title. How do you set System-Wide environment variables on OpenSUSE 11.3 // GNOME? I usually set them by adding an export to my ~/.bashrc, but I remember in Ubuntu that I could add them to /etc/environment. I checked that file out on my system, and it has a the default comment on it stating:
"This file is parsed by pam_env module...Syntax: simple "KEY=VAL" pairs on seperate lines"
This seems to be the spot to add my "export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/..etc", etc. but I wanted to clarify before I went ahead and made any changes.

xorg.log says:

but the file /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_hd.so is there.

I am curious if anyone has played around with this desktop environment? I would love to see a Linux distro use this as default. I think one thing Mac does well is self contained apps. Has anyone been able to get ROX to work on Ubuntu? Does anyone know of a distro that uses ROX as the default environment?

I must say, it wasn't all reading this or that, but rather making changes to my paths that helped me to understand. Anyway, if anyone who does not understand environment variables is reading this, then I recommend reading this

OK- I have 1 last question for my fellow linux users. Lets say I opened up $HOME /.profile and did some editing, and later decided to undo all of my changes but I forgot exactly what changes I made so now I want to set the default in there. How would I accomplish this? How do I set the defaults for any ~/.bashrc or ~/.cshrc type of files that I change.
I would like to know how I can change my default desktop environement. I don't use gdm at all, I don't want to. I prefer startx (I boot into terminal mode). Also, I would like a global setting.

I have problems with gdm after i login it kicks me back to the login screen. i tried few solutions but it didnt work (only have wifi access, cant use apt-get). I only need to backup few folders before i can reinstall ubuntu but unfortunately i have some command problems with mount. I tried to kill gdm but it didnt help. How can i set gdm to default? or rather how can i get a provisional desktop environment?

I'd like to customize the login screen (if I grokked correctly, that's gdm). I already saw how to change the background or how to enable automatic login, but what I'd like to do is this :
1. Disable that rather annoying "pong" sound when I select a user,
2. Set a default desktop environment. Gnome seems to be the default environment selected in the drop-down menu, but me, I'd like for it to be XFCE.
I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.

When I download an rpm the yast icon bounces around for a while and then dies. I assume this means I need another set of yast launch instructions. View 2 Replies View RelatedStarting a few days ago, I am unable to leave my kde session using the "leave" facilities. On a fresh login, I can select the leave button and it pops up the menu as per normal. However, whatever I select (logout, shutdown or reboot) nothing happens. I cannot now select the leave button. I click it but nothing happens.
I checked the log messages and see an error posted by kdm that grub-set-default is not in the path. I issue a find and, yeps, no grub-set-default. A week or two ago, I uninstalled CUPS. Went to make tea, came back to find a huge list of stuff being deleted. I had to abort it and spent a long while re-installing loads of stuff, for instance, even Mozzila. Can't find where to get grub-set-default so anybody know where to get it?
This is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".
How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.
