OpenSUSE Hardware :: Screen Fonts And Colors Also Look Terrible Compared To Windows / Ubuntu

Jul 14, 2010

I have used Ubuntu and Linux Mint for quite some time now until I got a new machine. Some friends told me to try OpenSUSE because it has really been polished over the last few years.Install went smoothly got everything working properly except for my video card. My video card is an ATI HD4890 with sound support over HDMI. I had the sound working in Ubuntu using the non-oss ATI drivers. I was wondering if someone could please teach me how to install them again here on OpenSUSE 11.3. My screen fonts and colors also look terrible compared to Windows or Ubuntu.

Is there a way I can make it look better? I remember CCC (Catalyst Control Center for ATI) had two color formats (RGB and YCbCr). I had to set it to YCbCr because my screen is an HDTV and it looked much cleaner than RGB. Is there a way I can acheive similar results with OpenSUSE?

Slackware :: Firefox Default Fonts Will Not Display On Webpages?

Feb 12, 2010

Recently I was creating an image in GIMP when I needed to add a new font. I went to my mounted XP drive and copied the file I wanted over into /usr/X11R6/share/fonts/TTF then I went to the font installer as root and installed the font system wide. After that I reloaded GIMP and the font was available. A little while later I went to browse the internet and when I loaded up firefox, it showed a properly formatted and spaced page with no text on it at all. If I highlighted a line, the invisible text would copy to the clipboard properly and I could read it that way. I figured it might've been a just a FF issue, but when I loaded up Seamonkey, I wound up with the same problem. I'm using Firefox 3.0.16 and Seamonkey 2.0.1. I tried going into the preferences and changing the default font, but no matter what I change it to, it doesn't fix it. Slack 1.2 running kernel 2.6.27.31-smp. I use slapt-get to stay up to date and as far as I can tell i have the latest patches and pkgs.

Code:

bash-3.1$ fc-cache -rv
/usr/share/fonts/OTF: caching, new cache contents: 23 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/TTF: caching, new cache contents: 91 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/Type1: caching, new cache contents: 64 fonts, 0 dirs

Fedora :: Some Of The Arial Fonts Look Not Right In Firefox 3.5?

Nov 13, 2009

I've installed Arial fonts as per this package:msttcore-fonts-2.0-3.noarch.rpmut why do some of the Arial fonts look not right in Firefox 3.5? It seems that Arial 10pt bold is the worst, with large spacing between the letters. In Ubuntu, using that same RPM and the same version of Firefox, the fonts look fine.I have two screen shots you can click on:1) Fedora 12 beta:Ubuntu 9.04:irefox-ubuntu.gifLook at the top left corner, "Jamieson Cottages by the River" - it's almost like the Arial 10pt bold is double spaced in Fedora.Whereas in Ubuntu, things look much better in terms of letter spacing.

Fedora :: Block Fonts In Firefox?

Aug 30, 2011

I went ahead and installed msttcorefonts because I need them for college work. However, when I have them installed, a few sites here and there like Facebook will use the font, but it'll be fuzzy, which is the complete opposite of what the free fonts did for me. I've thought about whether it would be possible to block those fonts in Firefox or only make them available in Libreoffice (the only place where I even need them), but there doesn't seem to be a way to do so.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Firefox Fonts Look Crappy For Web Contents

Apr 23, 2009

I have Fedora 10 running and the firefox fonts look really crappy for web content, especially for certain web sites. I have Samsung SyncMaster 941BW 19" widescreen LCD monitor. I have NVidia GE Force 5500FX graphics card. Following are the things I tried after going through some articles on web.

1. Installed msttcorefonts and webcorefonts packages. Set Firefox to use 'Times New Roman', 'Arial' and 'Georgia'.
2. Got freetype with BCI enabled.
3. Changed DisplaySize to enable 96DPI and changed the same on Gnome font settings.
4. Enabled LCD subpixel smoothing and full hinting.

I've tried both "nv" and "kmod-nvidia-173xx" drivers for the NVidia card. I tried 1440x900 (native resolution) and 1152x864 (seems to be next best but everything looks stretched). I have seen some improvements with above, but still the fonts strain my eyes. I use 'Bitstream Vera' fonts for application. The fonts and display look splendid within Fedora, but the problem is with the web content in Firefox. I use my system primarily for web browsing.

Fedora Networking :: Having Terrible Time Getting IP Address For Eth0

Dec 19, 2009

I am trying to get networking up on an old PII which I have successfully installed with FC4. There is a link and activity on the onboard interface because I see the indicator lights. The controller is a 3Com PCI 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx @ 0xdc80.The only message returned by dmesg about eth0 is "Dropping NETIF_F_SG since no checksum feature."The driver module, 3c59x, is loaded as well as the mii module that depends on it.There is something about "unknown parameter`irq'" in the dmesg text regarding the driver.I noticed that eth0 is sharing an IRQ with the UHCI Host Controller. That should not be a problem, but it should not be necessary. And I could do away with USB if this is a conflict and that is the easiest way to solve it.When I drop to console at runlevel 3, and call dhclient, which is installed, I get a message telling me there is no reply to the dhcp request.I don't think the problem is on the router/switch side.

Ubuntu :: Making Firefox 3.6 Fonts Look Like IE7 Or IE8

Jan 29, 2010

I'm coming from windows and now I've switched to ubuntu. I find firefox 3.5 (and now 3.6) very hard to read. I'd like to have the same font rendering on my ubuntu than on my windows xp, using internet explorer with cleartype enabled. I've searched A LOT on Internet, tested like 20 different .fonts.conf. However I still can't get what I want. Take a look at my screenshots :[URL]

On the left : ubuntu (Firefox 3.6) - on the right : XP (Internet Explorer I'd like to have the same fonts than on the right.

Picture "enabled.png" is the closest display I can get. But it's still not perfect.
I took the .fonts.conf from this site : [URL]

I've also tried the fonts from the site [URL]Look here : [URL](this one is different : IE8 is on the left)

My fonts config in firefox is the same than on windows (Times new roman, arial, courrier new). And of course I've installed the ttf mscorefonts package.

I don't say that IE is the best thing in the world It's only because I've used it a lot and now it's hard to browse sites with different fonts.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Fonts Invisible After Upgrade?

Sep 11, 2010

I just upgraded a laptop from an older version of Ubuntu to 10.04.1 LTS, which included an upgrade of firefox to ver. 3.6.9. Many pages in firefox now display only some of the text, although if I hilight where the text should be I get hilighted areas and if I copy and paste them into an editor the text shows up. Other pages display normally.

An example of this is [URL] where the "Welcome to the Ubuntu Forums ..." (un-logged in) paragraph is invisible although the off-white box which should contain this text is there. A few things I've tried and discovered:

* SeaMonkey doesn't have this problem (I'm using it to write this).

* If I un-check "Allow pages to choose their own fonts", the invisible text shows up with locally spec'd fonts. Specifying local font colors makes no difference.

* Switching users makes no difference.

* I've tried re-installing a large number of ttf fonts plus fontconfig, which makes no difference.

* This problem wasn't there before the upgrade.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Fonts Huge - How To Shrink

May 12, 2010

I was running SUSE 10.0 for a long time. At one point, I tried ubuntu 8.10, but went back to SUSE 10.0 because I couldn't take the huge fonts. I'm committed to running Linux (I'm a software developer with 25 years experience on UNIX and Linux platforms). I've been able to shrink the icon size on the desk via the file browser, change the other fonts, etc. - but running Google, and even this linuxquestions.org interface is an experience that's as if I had 20/400 vision (I have 20/20-30).

How do I shrink this? Zooming in and out from the "view" pulldown sort of works, but it's temporary - plus, doing that causes the resolution on the smaller print to get pretty blurry. Even the fonts and icons on the toolbar are HUGE! SUSE didn't exhibit this behavior - but I'd rather be running ubuntu, since that's what most of my potential employers are running. It would seem a certainty this has come up before, but I haven't found an answer yet. I'll use ANY font/configuration combination that will give me smaller print, that isn't blurry.

Slackware :: No Text Visible In Firefox After Fonts Additions

Nov 8, 2010

I am having some problem with fonts in some websites in firefox. The fonts will not be visible! The image should be self explanatory. Let me add that I am trying to add support for unicode in linux something that I wasn't much familiar with up until now - so I messed a few things up before I managed to unicode in linux command line and konsole terminal. Additionally, I tried adding true type fonts (which I added in a new sub-folder /usr/share/fonts/ms-ttf) and run fc-cache. Moreover, I installed the fonts system-wide from within KDE system settings. In the end: I am stuck with a semi-working firefox; facebook and digitalblasphemy to name a few don't show any fonts.

Gmail and other sites work fine. Google-chrome has not been affected at all - all pages show up fine. Also the extra 'ms-ttf' fonts that I installed in kde system-wide do not appear in libre-office in the available fonts.. I am not sure if this has to do with the more general mess I've caused or it is some more specific matter. I tried following [URL] tips in compiling firefox but I decided not to install requiredbuilder in order to proceed with the installation - I ended up installing frefox-3.6.12 from -current, but the problem persists.
