OpenSUSE Install :: Grub-set-default Gone Missing 11.3

Jun 13, 2011

Starting a few days ago, I am unable to leave my kde session using the "leave" facilities. On a fresh login, I can select the leave button and it pops up the menu as per normal. However, whatever I select (logout, shutdown or reboot) nothing happens. I cannot now select the leave button. I click it but nothing happens.

I checked the log messages and see an error posted by kdm that grub-set-default is not in the path. I issue a find and, yeps, no grub-set-default. A week or two ago, I uninstalled CUPS. Went to make tea, came back to find a huge list of stuff being deleted. I had to abort it and spent a long while re-installing loads of stuff, for instance, even Mozzila. Can't find where to get grub-set-default so anybody know where to get it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub - Not Changing Anything From Default - Error 22

Feb 11, 2011

I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Suse 11.3, installing suse second on a seperate 80GB drive. After a ridiculous amount of faffing around due to my dvd writer essentially not working, finally get suse installed, messing with GRUB settings in an attempt to preserve Windows' boot manager, restart; GRUB error 22.

Go through the whole process again, this time accepting the use of grub and not changing anything from default - exactly the same response. None of the tens of boot disks/utilities I've tried will allow me into suse to have a look at the grub config. There are no applications for windows that will allow me to write to ext3.

OpenSUSE Install :: Changing Default Keyboard Mapping On Grub?

Nov 30, 2009

I have installed 11.2 with English as default language. During the installation, I tried to change the default keyboard mapping to Spanish, but right now, when the system boots it uses an English mapping. I've seen there is an option to change that on the grub menu and I would like it to default to Spanish. Is it possible? I haven't found much info on the web, but my guess is that changing the DEFAULT_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with an unknown-keyboard-related option will solve it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Custom Build From Suse Studio|missing "initrd-2.6.34.7-0.5-default" File?

Dec 2, 2010

If you can access Suse Studio here is thlink to the buildLFS Host - SUSE GalleryGoogle hasn't been friendly and neither has a search on these forums, I don't know which man to read so a finger in the right dirrection (preferably not the middle) would be nice as far as that goesRight now the yast live installer trips up at %84 while saving the boot loader configuration and displays a popup that says An error occurred during initrd creation. /sbin/mkinitrd: illegal optionI then press enter to acknowledge the message and the installation continues without a hitch.

When I go to boot up (no other os installed) grub says it cant find the file initrd-2.6.34.7-0.5-defaultIf you boot the live cd again you can mount the boot partition and youll find a broken symlink called initrd that islooking for the missing file above.Like I said above, if it an obvious fix, all I need is some direction, I don't mind reading. (been doing that all day)If you need more specifics Id be happy to supply, I'm just not sure whats relevant and don't want to bloat the post.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Missing Boot Loader - Manual Install Brings To GRUB CLI?

Dec 22, 2010

I am a brand new Ubuntu user that just tried to install on an old PC using the 10.10 desktop edition.During installation, I hit an error that the bootloader could not install, and after reading about it on the forums, opted to attempt to install it manually after. I have followed the tutorial located here,[URL].. on reinstalling GRUB2 from the liveCD, which I assume means to boot with the installation CD and select try Ubuntu (given the only other option is install, which I have tried twice) everything up to step 5 in that tutorial seems to run successfully, and I am given a message it is installed, but then when I reboot the system it does not open the GRUB2 menu, rather the CLI interface, which suggests there is no grub.cfg

So I am unable to refresh at the GRUB menu because that command is not recognized by the CLI (and it may not help if I am missing files, so I might have screwed up reinstalling them in step 5, or maybe the "Try Ubuntu" terminal doesn't alter the computer like I thought?)

Ubuntu Installation :: Adjust The Default Setting Via /etc/default/grub?

May 29, 2010

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. But then i found a file 40_custom that said:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0

[code]....

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands Make System Boot To Grub Shell Instead Of Grub Menu?

Apr 17, 2010

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.

If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux

OpenSUSE Install :: Not Mess Up GRUB And Still Add Windows 98 To GRUB Menu?

Apr 27, 2010

I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?

One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.

Ubuntu Servers :: Grub Error On Hardware Raid 1 / Default Root Device Shows That Prefix=(hd0,1)/grub?

Apr 13, 2011

array 1:
slot 0 & 1

array 2:
slot 2 & 3

during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

OpenSUSE :: New Install, Pppoe And Gcc Missing?

Mar 12, 2010

I installed openSUSE a couple of weeks ago but didn't use it until 2 days ago. It was the latest version when I installed it.To my surprise there wasn't a gcc or pppoe installed. Or at least there wasn't a command line begging with ppp.I tried to install them both with rpms. I think I got them both, just they don't work very well. In particular rp-pppoe doesn't work at all. It says that there's no modem on eth0, which is very true there's only a eth cable. gcc seems to work but I'm not sure I installed all the dependencies.I can't use yast because of lack of internet. I have to reboot to windows and download rpms. Can you give me a work around? At least for the pppoe then it might fix itself. Can I have some EXACT links to rpms or another solution?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 /dev/sda Missing In Partitions?

Aug 22, 2011

I have an acer travelmate 632 running 11.3.The grandkids have been playing playing frozen bubble in fullscreen mode but the "full screen" was actually only the central part of the monitor.Yesterday, there were a bunch of updates. Today, the kids again played frozen bubble but this time, the "full screen" was really the full screen, not the sub-window. After exiting the game, a window popped up telling me that a monitor had been disconnected and would I like to reconfigure. I said yes.

After reboot, the graphical login failed saying that a serious error had been encountered and that I should consult the KDM logs. I went to console mode but was unable to log in. Neither as root or as the regular user. Both fail with "Login incorrect". In fact, the only way in now is via single-user mode.

Looking through the /var/log/messages, I see a curious set of mesages complaining the, for instance, "/dev/sda4 is not in PARTITIONS" note the upper-case. I then see that, despite what "mount" tells me, ?home (sda4) and /boot (sda1) are not mounted. That is, I cannot list their contents. If I manually mount those partitions, I can list their contents.
