I'm 24 with excellent vision, and I'll be the first to say that DAMN Kubuntu's default font size is entirely too small! Does anybody else feel this way? By simply forcing 96 DPI it helps out quite a bit - but it's confusing that this wouldn't be enabled by default to begin with.
View 3 RepliesI have an old Omnibook my Dad let me have and I wanted some version of linux on it so naturally I am TRYING to install Damn Small Linux. Here is what I have done so far...
1. I took the hard drive out and used a usb to IDE cable and used the damn small linux live cd on my desktop and installed DSL on the hard drive using the USB HDD tool.
2. I put the hard drive back in the Omnibook and started the boot process
3. When I get to the desktop the screen is full of pink and green lines and I can make it the outlines of the desktop and the icons but cannot read them.
4. When I use the boot floppy to try and boot it and use fb800x600 cheatcode I get all the way to where it is supposed to load the desktop and it gives me this error:
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests ( 0 known processed) with 0 events remaining Does anyone know how I can fix this?
today I decided to try and install Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on a very old laptop. Unfortunately once installed, it refused to load the operating system. I am able to run DSL when I load it to RAM, but I am unable to install it to my harddrive correctly? The system on which I am trying to install it on is a Toshiba Tecra 550CDT.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have DSL installed on an old desktop and I've never been able to get flash to install. I'm not sure which version it is. (how do I check?) I think it's from 2007. It uses firefox 1.0.6. I do not know how to install tar.gz files, though someone walked me through it once, but it still did not work.
Please do not send me to another page to read several paragraphs that will just confuse me anyhow.. This should be a simple enough question to answer for the experts.
hi: I just installed damn small linux on a Dell 233 Pentium w/ Toshiba CD-ROM XM 6102B, it works fine except for mounting CD's & Floppies (and I assume, although I haven't tried USB-Drives)
when logged in as root, and typing in
mount dev/cdrom
w/ a cd in a the drive
the answer is
no medium found
when using X mount floppy command,
w/ a floppy in the drive, I get:
Error: mount: relocation error: mount: undefined symbol: blkid_known_fstype
also, my cd-rom drive won't stay closed, which is really annoying,
Don't know how this happened, but I only see small boxes instead of my fonts on the desktop, in the title bars or on the panel

For some time now (actually, since I migrated to KUbuntu) the fonts at "log in" / "start up" are way to small to read.After start up / log in every thing is normal. Normal or proprietary drives makes no difference

I just received a pennicle TV tuner card for my birthday so I installed mythtv. All I get when I start the frontend is a puke colored screen. There appears to be buttons, but they are so small you have to strain to see them. I had to set up a custom xorg-config file to get my resolution to work with my monitor because the nvidia driver couldn't properly detect the screen. According to some posts, that could be the problem but there were no solutions. I am at a loss as to what to do.
System information: Debian Squeeze on quad-core phenom (AMD64). Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card using the Nvidia driver. Pinnace TV tunner using Conexant CX2388x chipset.
I hooked up Lucid to a 50" and adjusted the resolution to the max. Gives a clearer sharper picture but all the displayed items are tiny. Is there something I need to do that I haven't? I went from 1086x720 to 1400(approx)x900(approx) and created the problem. Now I'm back at 1086x720. I'm using the Nvidia 195 drivers.

My issue is, after I upgraded to fedora 13 and after upgrading wine, my wine configuration gui and all the gui's of all *.exe applications that I was using started having abnormally large gui's with equally large buttons and small fonts. I have attached a screenshot of the wine config GUI as it appears on my screen. My current screen resolution is 1280X1024 and I'm using an integrated ATI chip (ATI Radeon x200 express) with the mesa-dri drivers for display.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt appears to me that fonts for Linux in general are rubbish. They couldn't get any smaller. I am new to linux having moved over from windows. I have a website that uses the Verdana font. Not recognized in Linux. Just about every forum I go on the fonts are barely readable they are so small. My screen resolution is 1024x 768. If there is no solution to this problem then I'm afraid it's back to windows for me as I'm getting very bad eyestrain. I'm not jesting there. Are there better fonts that can be installed? Incidentally, I tried Ubuntu which is worse.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI finally got around to upgrading from etch to lenny. After having upgraded, I find that the fonts are extremely small in all gtk applications (iceweasel, abiword, gnumeric, etc.)
Everything looked fine before the upgrade, but now the application fonts in the menu bars, dialogs, etc. are so small as to be unreadable. Also, when I open up gnumeric spreadsheets the fonts in the cells are unreadable. All my X-based applications (rxvt, xfig, xmms, etc.) look just fine, it's just the GTK apps that have the font problems.
Interestingly, web pages themselves render just fine in iceweasel. Also, abiword documents look fine even though the menus, dialogs, etc. are too small to read.
I was able to get a workaround for the application fonts. I put the following in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 code...
At 24 point the fonts are still a bit on the small side, though. And I still have problems reading information in the gnumeric cells.
I use the fvwm window manager without gnome or kde.
I'm helping a colleague with his laptop, he finds the fonts within programs too small and they hurt his eyes. We have tried changed the fonts using System>Appearances>Fonts. Changed the dpi resolution in the "Details" section, and tried changing the screen resolution, but this doesn't work or make it better.
I have attached a screen shot to show the problem. As I hope you can see, the font size on the desktop and top tool bar is much larger than within the programs.
Can anyone help, we have looked through all of the menus we can think of, but nothing makes the font bigger.
Has anyone tried the cool font that comes default in Ubuntu 10.10 on openSUSE 11.3? Although I hate Ubuntu, I loved the font and the interface is really clean.

View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently I was creating an image in GIMP when I needed to add a new font. I went to my mounted XP drive and copied the file I wanted over into /usr/X11R6/share/fonts/TTF then I went to the font installer as root and installed the font system wide. After that I reloaded GIMP and the font was available. A little while later I went to browse the internet and when I loaded up firefox, it showed a properly formatted and spaced page with no text on it at all. If I highlighted a line, the invisible text would copy to the clipboard properly and I could read it that way. I figured it might've been a just a FF issue, but when I loaded up Seamonkey, I wound up with the same problem. I'm using Firefox 3.0.16 and Seamonkey 2.0.1. I tried going into the preferences and changing the default font, but no matter what I change it to, it doesn't fix it. Slack 1.2 running kernel 2.6.27.31-smp. I use slapt-get to stay up to date and as far as I can tell i have the latest patches and pkgs.

I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though

Why is this the Achilles Heel of Ubuntu? I run a P4 with 1.5 GB of RAM and run an nvidia GEForce 6200...Not the most up-to-date hardware, but I should be able to watch a ..... video in a resolution larger than 640x480 without it tearing and being unwatchable, shouldn't I? Sorry for the rant, but I've been messing with this for the last few weeks and I'm about to fork the money over for Windows 7 just to have this PC back up and running in an acceptable way. I've done every suggestion I've found here with Flash and nvidia drivers and think I'm just screwed now.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an external harddisk (actually removed from a laptop) and I want do some analysis and data recovery on it. I bought a sata-to-usb adapter. Now the problem is: if I deselect media_automount "media_automount_open" and I select "media_autorun_never", the external sata driver is not recognised and I have no /dev/sdb1 to manually mount. Not a hint of a newly plugged drive in dmesg.
Then I re-enabled automount and then I remounted the drives as read-only. Afterward I starter cloning the hd with dd.After some three hours, the f*ck*ng laptop remounted the partition rw and the dd process went into io error. So the question is: how can I safely work with a usb device with manual operations?
i'm using ubuntu 10.04 LTS and my GTK is amd radeon HD 6850. yesterday, i ran ubuntu 10.10 with the fglrx offic. drivers properly on my native resolution and with 3D acceleration, though i couldn't run my favorite game minecraft, so i tried to reinstall. by this, i accidentally formated my windows partition, so all i've got now are my live cd's and this installation of 9.10, where i downloaded the official drivers what didn't work, then upgraded to 10.04 LTS and can't remove the damn fglrx drivers. the error i get is: [URL]

I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?
I would like to use the Adobe Garamond Pro in my text doccument in open office writer. I got a text document where from a friend where it is used so I know that it can. But when I want to edit I cant find it in the fonts dropdown menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?
I was trying to create a partition to share between Windows 7 (pre-installed, and I use it for some games and specific programs) and Fedora 15 (I use it for everything else), but when I tried to do this, apparently I already reached the maximum of primary partitions, 4. So I have 3 for Windows and 1 for Fedora!
The schema I have (see picture) is, 10.5 GB for windows recovery, 100MB for windows boot, 341GB for Windows 7, and 48 GB for Fedora, and it's in a dual boot. My intention was to leave about 100GB for Windows, 50GB for Fedora and the rest for shared files.
But I also don't want to format the recovery files, I had luck when windows broke and I could recover it with this files (I don't have the installation DVD, but it is original and validated), so I would like to keep those files.
1. I make a backup (I have no idea of how or if this is even possible) from fedora of this partitions and save them as files.
2. I try to include the /boot of windows in the big windows partition, but, is this really needed? Can I just delete the 100MB windows booter? (is it enough with the Fedora one or do I need this one?)
Is there a way to make more than 4 partitions? (it would be actually a 3rd option, but I didn't find any info online)

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

View 3 Replies View Relatedit started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.
How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?
