OpenSUSE Install :: MBR Boot - No Cd For Xp And Cannot Access Windows

I have done my due diligence looking for some kind of USB recovery prog or "diskette" that I can get into recovery system or even just boot a xp cmd prompt so I can fix it from there. I have tried several different programs and none seem to work. Go figure. Anyone know of any recovery disks for windows xp that can be booted from a USB?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Log Messages - How To Access In 11.4

Jul 8, 2011

My memory could be failing but I thought there was a tool, possibly in Yast, to access the boot logs in earlier versions. Can't find it now though. Is there such a tool other than console?I should clarify in case I am using the wrong terminology that I seek the log which scrolls up the screen during the booting process. Reason is that I see several errors and warnings there and wish to investigate further.

OpenSUSE Network :: Boot For Remote Computer Access Involve RDP

Jan 21, 2011

I'm new to the principle of network boot and I was wondering if this is possible. Computer A runs openSUSE. Computer B is an older, slower computer. Computer A and computer B are connected using an Ethernet cable that supports two-way transport. Can I use network boot on computer B to use the OS on computer A remotely while computer A is being used too? Does it involve RDP? Will the remote user experience noticeable lags/delays? What do I need to install on computer A to make this happen?

OpenSUSE Install :: 128 Gb Boot Error / Installation Froze At 92% And After The Laptop Wouldn't Boot?

Nov 23, 2010

I tried to install 11.3 on my acer aspire 7530 notebook to have dual boot with xp.

I made 4 partitions: one for xp, and the three for linux were made automatically. Before installation I got the warning that the partition wasn't entirely below 128 gb, I installed anyway to give it a try.

The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.

Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Access Gnome Desktop On 11.2

Jan 19, 2010

I am trying to install openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop from the DVD in February's Linux Magazine which I hope guarantees a good disk. However both the live DVD and a trial full installation load to a green screen without taskbar or icons meaning I cannot run any applications or even close down. The live KDE version runs OK but I wanted Gnome because I have had problems backing up Kmail in the past. I have run version 10.3 with Gnome successfully on this computer previously.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Access Anything 10.3 Related Anymore

Jan 31, 2010

I know 10.3 is old, but my main reason for using Linux is that I can build a machine and then just use it for 3-5 years without dealing with stupid degradation issues like Winblows.

The problem is that I can't access any 10.3 online respositories anymore, so package management is a big mess. Basically I'm down to manual rpm-ing. If I try to install anything with Yast, it attempts to access 10 different repositories for dependencies, all of which fail because I guess they just don't have 10.3 directories anymore.

I really hate updating my Linux all the time to the newest version, because frankly that usually breaks things.

Not sure what do to. This conundrum often makes me consider if any distributions are better in this regard. But then I don't have a lot of time to play with Linux. What started out as a hobby in 1994 is now a tool, like any OS, that I just want to work. I don't use Linux to use Linux, I use it to run programs.

OpenSUSE Install :: Create USB Boot Drive (like The Old Boot Floppies)?

Sep 29, 2010

I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP installed, and for various reasons (Help: I borked my WindowsXP boot when installing OpenSUSE 11.3) I can not install a GRUB boot loader to the first hard drive (hd0).

I currently have a second hard drive in this laptop with a perfectly working OpenSUSE 11.3 instance, but no way to boot into it. I remember back in ancient times, a common option with Linux distros was to create a boot floppy to boot into Linux rather than installing GRUB or LILO to MBR. Since this laptop doesn't have a floppy drive I'd like to do the same thing with a USB stick. Is there any way to install GRUB (or something similar) to a USB stick? What I am not asking here is whether I can put a full, bootable Linux instance on a USB drive - I only want a boot loader on USB that launches to the appropriate mount point on (hd1).

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Into SuSE (Dual Boot With Win7)?

May 26, 2011

I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 7 with openSuSE 11.4, i was told that i should install SuSE after windows 7 as it takes care of the boot-loader and automatically detects my windows installation and not vice-versa,
But that is not true in my case.

So i had 2 hard disks one had windows 7 installed and one was empty so i decided that i should get openSuSE 11.4 on the empty hard disk and dual-boot it with windows 7 (that i already had installed). Downloaded the DVD, put it on a USB and installed SuSE on the other hard disk normally, it detected my windows installation on my main hard disk but i didn't touch that, only formatted my other hard disk to ext4

After the installation it booted automatically into SuSE, but now every time on a fresh restart the system boots automatically into windows. Methods i have already tried to resolve this and it didn't work:

1. Booted from the DVD and selected an "Upgrade" not "New Installation" so i could boot again into my SuSE installation which did work, checked my "Boot Loader" options from YaST and checked the "Boot from MBR" option instead of the "Boot from root partition" option, That Did NOT work.

2. Used the same method to Boot into SuSE with the "Upgrade" Option opened up the terminal and tried to install grub manually again using this link

Also is there way to go directly to maintenance shell from grub(not talking about single user mode). I want to go maintenance shell where / partition is not mounted.

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Computer In Local Network?

Apr 3, 2010

The desktop computer stores most of our family's files and is mostly powered on, installed with Debian/openSUSE (KDE4).

We have 2 more portable (also Linux, KDE4) computers and frequently need to access files stored in the desktop. Currently file transferred is by usb thumbdrive which is troublesome.

The computers are all connected to a wireless router that provides access to the internet.

Reading/goolging and understand that there are many ways to share files to the extend that I am lost - Samba, NFS, SSH .....

My problem is to find out: What is the best way to access computers within the local network? "Best" here means:

- Secure

- Relative ease to setup

- Easy to use, file access with GUI (file manager?) as the entire family is using the computers.
