I have just installed openSUSE 11.3 Linux on my USB External HDD. I am using fast internet connection and I am able to use it fluently in Windows XP. But not able to do so with openSUSE 11.3. As far as I know there should be a tray icon for N/W but its also not shown. And when I start N/W manager it states that n/w manager is already running.
View 12 RepliesInstalling from Live USB: Installing from USB on my desktop (used this method for laptop install) goes without a hitch. EXCEPT, I notice there is no support for my wireless card chipset (Atheros 7413, used /bin/lspci to find). I download the drivers for Linux, but I need Make to build the drivers...ok. I download the Make files from my laptop, make coffee, slap the makefiles onto a flash drive and run the configure file on my desktop version of SUSE. Whoops, need a c compiler (odd that openSUSE did not come with gcc? bit confused on that). If you can't tell by now, I've been using linux for less than a month so I am what you would call a noob? After the lack of c compiler, I drove to my office to snag some DVDs to download the DVD iso image, hoping it would have some form of c compiler/make packaged, since the description does say the DVD has more software (can't find any prebuilt versions of either...?)
Installing from DVD: This was my next step. I wrote the iso image to a DVD and proceeded to boot from DVD. The installer fails at the system analysis, saying it cannot "create a repository". writing the iso to a second DVD produces the same result. Googling has not yielded a solution. tl;dr can't use openSUSE on my desktop because my wireless chipset is not suported by SUSE. I need Make to build the drivers, but I need a c compiler to compile Make, and I need the internet to get both for my machine.
At some point, the install process asks whether to test internet access. I replied Yes, and the test failed. Retries also failed, leading me to conclude, mistakenly, that the ethernet card was not supported by SuSE 11.2. Finally I elected to skip the test, resigned to the loss of internet access. The install program then proceeded to access online repositories without difficulty, and I had no further difficulty accessing the internet. So why the misleading test result?

So I went do realteak downloaded latest available drivers that seems to be were release yesterday did same command and same error So I made only make and it went fine did then make clean modules and went fine so made make install, depmod -a and modprobe r8169 verify int was up and getting correct ip from router but I'm not able to access the internet or ping any IP address

I installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message
- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)
This was followed by a message box containing
- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents
Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
I connected my laptop running with Ubuntu 11 in the LAN but I couldn't access internet.But I could ping to the other computers connected in the LAN. I tried the same thing with windows 7 in the same laptop and I could access internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
I've just set up a webserver and forwarded ports 80, and 22, and I cannot access the inernet on that machine but I can connect via ssh and visit a page on the server when on a different network.When I put the router in dmz mode I can connect to the internet properly.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have an old Debian distro (2.6) and it is completely stripped down, containing only the very bare minimum in software packages in order to function.I would now like to get internet access on this computer and I have installed a network card and connected it to an ethernet port however I am not sure where to go from there (i have little linux experience when it comes to installing/removing hardware and software).
Would I be right in saying that I need to install some kind of network/internet package in order to gain internet access? If so where would I get this from? and if so is this package likely to interfere with other packages I have installed? preferably I would like to leave everything else as it is. Frankly it only just works in its current state and i don't want a network package updating other packages and ruining all the dependencies and making my life hell :P
To clarify: I do not currently have internet access on the computer in question so I cannot use those fangled console command that download and install packages automatically. I also do not have a Debian CD, nor am I interested in downloading the 30discs worth of Debian distro as this internet connection is super slow
I'm having a problem with my wireless router and I don't understand the source of it. I have a DLink 604 router since couple of years and it work without any problem. It is attach to a cable modem. Recently I tried to connect a wireless router (DL 624) in the same setup. But it refuse to connect (etho) to the Internet even if Knemo tell that my computer is connect. I tried everything: disconnect the modem, the router, reboot, update my firmware, disable the wireless, disable DHCP...name it. So I thought my router was the problem, so I just purchase a new one (DIR-628) and guess...the same problem. And as soon I reconnect the DL-604 everything is fine. So there is something with wireless router that I don't understand. And I don't have to say that the Wireless connection doesn't work either. Any clue of what can be wrong. Bye the way I use Mepis 8.

I'm trying to install the new version of hplip and the process stops with an error message stating there is no network access.
I tried to ping a known address and sure enough, no response.
I shut off the firewall on this machine. I shut off the firewall on my router. No access from Konsole.
Is there some setting I can't find?
Is there a network trouble shooting guide for OS 11.2 that I could follow? I've shot myself in the foot so I should try to fix it.
I changed the DNS server addresses and the number of IP addresses on my router. I then set my Linux system to use static IP addressing and edited the network settings for my network adapter accordingly. I can now no longer get to any web-site.
By contrast, I also updated 1 of my Windows computers in a similar way; it continues to work without problem.
I am trying to get internet connection on Open Suse 11.2 through my wireless connection. I can connect to my network but there is no internet connection. The internet connection does work with other Linux distros and with Windows 7 laptop and Windows XP machines. I tried turning off the firewall but still no connection. What is even stranger is I can ping Google but in Firefox I cannot go to Google.

I have just bought me the MBR1000 Cradlepoint router and it works great with my Verizon USB 760 modem plugged in it. I can now send and receive email on my Ubuntu laptop. I like it.My Gentoo desktop computer is just sitting there with no Internet access because my Verizon modem is no longer plugged into it but plugged into the router instead. Only my laptop now has Internet access. The laptop has an integrated wireless card built in the MB but my desktop has no such capability.
Is there a way (besides buying a wi-fi adapter) to get Internet access on my desktop computer through networking so that the router would give both computers Internet access at the same? My Gentoo desktop does have an ethernet adapter that perhaps I could useThe router has several LAN ports and one WAN port, both unused.
I am about to setup my WLAN which sadly isn' that easy. I have followed some instructions which use the wpa_supplicant for the WPA setup and router connecting. In this example the tutor uses a -Dmadwifi flag. Well, I am sure this works for many users, but obviously that madwifi is not MY wlan driver. So, actually my quite simple question: how can I find out my driver's name?
btw: wlan works, I succesfully connected to a non wpa/unsecure wlan router (I can't use it for surfing though. Trying -Dwext made the wpa_supplicant at least try to connect but without success. Well, maybe that isn't my driver either? Grepping for wext in /etc or dmesg to see if it actually IS didn't show me anything.
Also, I do not have hwinfo installed which is said to yield drivernames. Certainly, I cannot install it without internet access. So what can I do?

I can not access the internet from within ubuntu. I have tried pidgin firefox and ping but I do not get a reply with any of them. I do however get full access using Virtual Box OSE running Windows server 2003 running inside the machine. This is not a one off as I often have trouble connecting to internet from inside ubuntu but usually disabling then enabling networking works.

I'm really confused as to why a VM would be able to access the net and not the host.
I have CentOS5.5, it has full access to internet until I did something to it I couldn't figure out. This is not a cable issue since I could ping and ssh to other machines within my lan. Apache is also running fine, which is probably irrelevant. When I type traceroute cnn, it simply hangs, later saying [URL]:

This is a desktop version of CentOS5.5, when i do Administration - Network, it says eth0 is active and Primary and Secondary DNS are set correctly to my comcast DNS server at 68.94.15x.1
I have Suse 10.1 installed on my laptop. I do have an ip address, ifconfig says 192.168.1.4, but from my browser I cannot access the internet. I disabled the Firewall and have Security Settings set to Networked Workstation. My system can be accessed from an other machine via PuTTY... I would like to be able to access the internet from this machine, but don't know what goes wrong here...
View 3 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE 11.3 x64 KDE I dont know what happened it is a new install thats been running for 2 weeks . Now for some reason I can not access the internet or the router. Samba is working with Dolphin I can browse shares on local network both Windblows and Linux and ping local IP's. But I can NOT ping my router (the default gateway IP) with this box or access it with firefox so no internet. A VirtualBox of XP Pro running on this box has no problems with its bridged adapter getting out and seeing the router. I disabled the firewall, added gateway IP to network settings, disabled ipv 6 from the get go, added service provider dns's to nameservers tried opendns servers also.

I just did a large patch on my opensuse11.3 system (upgrade of all installed packages), and whilst my network interface works, I cannot get past my router onto the internet.
I can connect to other computers on my network (here at home), I have an IP address via dhcp from my router, but I cannot get internet access, either from thunderbird, firefox, or simply by [URL] Clearly the computer was connected to the internet just fine minutes before since I did the large patch! Also, my other computers CAN still connect to the internet.
how i can debug it? It is just too coincidental I have upgraded everything and now somethings amiss!
If it's relevant, my router is a netgear WGR614v9.

I have an valid account,and I used pppoe-setup to set the dial correctly.After the configuration,I typed "ifup ppp0",nothing wrong happens(no news is good news?).Then I typed "pppoe-status",it said I've connected to the internet . View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed fedora 11 64 bit on a new computer. I have no problems accessing the computers on my local network, but can not get past the gateway. The gateway is running windows XP with IP address 192.168.0.1 and is named "internet". When I boot the new computer in windows, there is no problem. Here is the output of some commands I saw in other posts with similar problems:
