I've just done a clean install of 11.4 from a Net install CD. I left it unattended while it installed, and came back to find a blank screen with just an xterm. I've rebooted it, and tried both the normal and the failsafe modes, but I just get the same result. The terminal contains the following:

like any other Linux newb, I came to Ubuntu because my Windows crashed one time too many. And I chose Ubuntu because "it just works". But these past few days that hasn't been true. I'm posting this from a netbook with Ubuntu, and am having no problems whatsoever, but normally I use an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop. I'll include the specs as written on the sticker:
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5GHz etc)
* Up to 1024 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS Turbocache
* 2 GB DDR2
Let me know if you need more details, and I'll add them later. Now, what happened was I clicked "hibernate" while leaving Firefox open. (I've done this hundreds of times, no problem) And when I went to turn it back on the next day there were weird graphical glitches in the loading screen, and it booted to the "tty1" prompt screen. I did a lot of googling and found quite a few posts about it, but the solutions either didn't work, or I didn't understand them. After trying several different suggestions from this forum and others, I managed to delete the graphics drivers. That enabled me to boot in low graphics mode, and naturally, I tried a whole bunch of things to make it work properly again. That only made it worse. Now it went straight from the loading screen to just blanking out and turning the display off. So, I tried new things. Over and over. The weird thing is even when I disconnected my harddrive and ran from a Live USB, the problem persisted. Could there be an issue with the graphics card itself? Anyway, after reconnecting the harddrive I tried to boot again. And it suddenly worked. Even HDMI to my bigger screen worked.

Something plagues my Ubuntu box since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 - I end up with a blank screen while booting. I use an Asus F81SE Notebook, and Dual Boot with Windows XP. Everything worked fine with Ubuntu 10.04.
When I start my notebook after the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10, I come to Grub, and when I select the latest kernel available, the hard disk LED blinks for a second, turns off ... and nothing happens any more. There is just a blinking text cursor.
As I upgraded from the previous Ubuntu version, there was an older kernel left (2.6.32-26-generic), which boots up fine.
I run 64 Bit on an Intel T4200 CPU. Booting the Live CD brings me to the purple screen with the open source logo at the bottom. I tried 32 Bit and 64 Bit versions of Ubuntu 10.10.
I don't seem to find similar problems on this forum. But does anyone know how to find the mistake?
I installed Lucid Lynx to a Gateway Solo Pro 9300(600 Mhz/224 M) and everything looked normal on the display with cursor,icons and abatross background. I rebooted and I have a blank screen with only a cursor showing. I don't think it is a video card problem because I had a normal display upon installation. Is there a way, on boot, to get into a diagnostic mode? what should I look for in the diagnostic mode?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've had no problems out of my multi-boot setup.. at all, and now all of a sudden (after an update on ubuntu? my JoliCloud and Ubuntu seem to do the same thing.. they show the logo then go to a black screen, doing nothing afterwards. i was wanting to know how to get this working again.. this is an Acer aspire One 11.6in AO751h. it's using grub to boot into it. i used EasyBCD to get it to let me choose ubuntu from windows start menu and it takes me to grub and all works(well worked until some update?) well.. even my windows 7 boots up just fine...

The install seemed to go fine and it said it needed to reboot to finish the install. It rebooted and then displayed a series of errors on a DOS-like screen (which I wish I wrote down). When I realized that it was definitely hung, I then held the power button to shut it off. After that, all it does is boot to up to a blank/black screen with a cursor.The box is old and I was actually going to throw it away, but I figured this was a good opportunity to give Linux a try. At this point, I'm willing to go to either Windows or Ubuntu... I don't really care which. I actually just want to recover some files on the box
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, which is installed to a second hard drive on my desktop. Earlier this afternoon, there were two 10 second power outages in my neighborhood. The first caused the system to restart with no effect, but after the second outage Ubuntu no longer boots properly. The problem is this: When I boot, I get to the grub screen. I have tried choosing four different options (the most recent kernel, a slightly older kernel, and the recovery mode of each). For each, kernel begins loading, but at a certain point the input to the monitor dries up, and after a few seconds the monitor enters standby mode. When I boot into recovery mood, the last message I see before the screen goes blank includes "udev starting version 151" followed by three lines that read "assuming [something that I can't read before the screen goes blank]." The computer itself remains on, but I have no way of knowing exactly what it is doing.
There seems to be no hardware damage as I can boat into Vista, and I can also boot into 10.04 from a USB. I've used fsck to check the partitions on my hard drive and the test came up clean for all of them. Since I only installed 10.04 a week ago, I could just copy the handful of useful files I have to my external drive and re-install, but I'd like to get some experience troubleshooting this problem. My first assumption is some kind of problem with the video drivers or GUI.
My laptop will be fine, then it turns off then immediately boots itself to a blank screen and no hard drive activity. This has happened 3 times today and never before. what ive done so far The first time this happened i tried turning it off and back on, still no screen and no hard drive activity so i took one of the RAM sticks out. Booted fine... To confirm that the RAM was bad i put it back and tried booting again, unfortunately it booted fine... i thought it was a fluke.
Until his happened a second time and instead of taking the RAM out, i waited a half hour and rebooted and it started booting fine, i turned my back for a sec and it was dead again. I have taken that RAM module out and am hoping it will not happen again, but it could well be the other RAM module since i really don't know or even if it is RAM at all.
Question is. Is this a RAM issue or something else? Where can i find a log to see what happened immediately prior to it offing itself? What's the chances it's the heatsync? (the laptop doesn't feel as hot as it sometimes does)

I currently have the nouveau driver black listed in my grub.conf setup: rhgb quiet nouveau.modeset=0 rdblacklist=nouveau
I did the update which installed/updated the following:
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed
---> Package kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed
---> Package kernel-headers.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be updated
---> Package kmod-nvidia.i686 1:280.13-2.fc14 set to be updated
However when I reboot the system boots to a blank screen, and even the previous kernel boots to a blank screen. I tried installing akmod-nvidia but get the same results
I've restored the system back to before the update for now..
I might want to try and put a gui on my ubuntu server installation went fine however now I'm staring at a blank screen. ubuntu boots goes to screen similar to desktop (loading with the mouse cursor) and then blank... occationaly it'll load a partial username box but more offten than not it loads a completly blank screen and the caps lock and scroll lock lights on the keyboard are both blinking consistantly...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently did an upgrade over the internet from the previous version 10.04. After everything required was downloaded and installed, I rebooted. Now, the system only displays a blank screen after a quick flash of "Ubuntu 10.10".
I have a copy of the 64-bit Desktop install CD of 10.10. I tried to boot up live with it. Same problem.

My next door neighbor has a dell Optiplex gx270 and wanted Ubuntu installing.
Hardware:
1gb RAM
P4 2.4
Intel 82865g Onboard Graphics.
40gb HDD
I tried the live cd and it froze on bootup, so I thought it might not be enough ram as the case sticker said 512mb ram. So I booted the minimum install cd and installed ubuntu desktop on it and then rebooted, when it boots i get grub and then screen will either do 1 of 2 things.
1. I get another flashing cursor in top left corner and then cursor stops flashing and then nothing happens at all.
2. Then screen will go black and nothing will show at all.
I have tried updating the BIOS, adding i915.modeset=0 to grub, didn't work either. Also couldn't find the xorg.conf under /etc/X11 to change driver to vesa. After several reboots atleast 30 since the check disk think showed and then it froze again. it booted correctly so I tried the latest intel driver from xorg edgers ppa. Rebooted and still the same thing happens. tried 2 different installs now and get same results. I have had to put winxp on it so he can atleast use it, but this will run out in 30 days unless he decides to buy it.
I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm have much computer experience but am new to Ubuntu. I typed in sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and it tells me it's already installed. Good. So it should work. I type sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start and the screen goes blank for 8 seconds three times in a row and then back to the command line. I have also tried gdm start without the path before and it says GDM already running. Aborting!

The install appeared to run OK, but when it rebooted to do the configuration, it hung. I tried a manual reboot a couple of times, then booted in FailSafe mode - came up OK and ran through the auto-config. Now, it still boots up ok in FailSafe, but in normal mode I get the wallpaper on the screen, but it hangs there.

Rebooting just after initial installation caused my laptop to give me a blank screen, no command prompt, nothing. With some help from the only post with such a problem on Ubuntu website and after first installation, I did the following:

i installed, few days before susu 11.2 . now my lcd only has resolution of 800x600, so i type "sax2". after he made that config, suse displayed me a gui, where i can change resolution and my frequency. i selectet native resolution and freq. (the right nvidia driver and lcd was detectet) and hit that apply button, then i needs to restart. done it, but then i got after that loading bar of suse only blank screen. so what was wrong ? and what i can do now to fix ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the problem (11.3) that the screen is blanked after 10 minutes (console and KDE). After some searching, I found out, it is a kernel "feature". Since it is a server, which should display network status permanently on screen this behavior is fatal.
I have tried:
- switch of power features vie Grub kernel param: apm=off, powersaved=off
- in kde via screensaver options
- in term "setterm -blank 0"
A surprising thing has happened! I have been happily using open suse 11.3 on an HP probook 4320s laptop. On reboot this morning, the screen starts out fine, but progressively fades into white and the boot does not seem to happen (at least there is no sound, since I cannot see anything). I am left with a completely white screen. Things are fine with the failsafe mode.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just tried to upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 Using iso on DVD. All went well until the stage where the screen says something like "rebooting from installed system" when the screen just went blank. After removal of the DVD and re-start of the system, selecting the normal Desktop from the boot menu just returns me to the blank screen. I never see a login screen.
Selecting Failsafe caused what appeared to be a complete normal sequence with a Login that worked and I ended up in KDE4 (my usual desktop) with everything apparently working, even WIFI. But the next time I re-booted and selected Failsafe I just got a command prompt. I now find that selecting Failsafe alternates between the GUI and a command prompt on each attempt!

After I install SUSE I reboot and click on Desktop it then goes to a loading screen. After that it scrolls a lot of info then the screen goes blank. I have no idea why and I have tried it on 3 different computers with the same problem.

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
Since 11.2 installed but shows blank screen at boot despite booting into runlevel 3 with acpi=off and noapic, I decided to try 11.3 M4 again.Media check is OK for 11.3 M4.Boot from MBR. GRUB menu shows Ubuntu and Windows 7 as well as openSUSE 11.3 desktop default and 11.3 failsafe. Both opensuse11.3 default and 11.3 failsafe return a blank screen despite the following boot options:

I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.

Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.
I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.
I just installed 11.3 on a Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop. After going through the install process it restarted (without a full reboot I believe) and spent a very long time going through a bunch of message. E.g. it spends about 10-15 minutes building java fonts, and warning me that Japanese/Chinese/Korean might not work in Java.About 20+ minutes after bootup it finishes with all the status messages (including a message that said it couldn't execute /usr/bin/cmp !?) and goes to a blank screen with a mouse sprite -- first a spinning circle, then a regular arrow sprite. So it's not a totally black screen, but all I have is the mouse sprite.
I let it sit there for over an hour.I think it was hitting the disk but nothing happened. I tried rebooting and it did the same thing.I tried setting the "nomodeset" boot parameter, which had helped someone with a similar problem no change.I tried it in failsafe mode no change.
I installed 11.3 as a new install over 10.3, kept the $home and windows partitions, and let it reformat the other two partitions. NO disk partitioning structure was changed.
I did get a warning that GRUB over 128GB might not be able to boot.
I did enable the MBR.
GRUB menu does come up, but upon selection of SUSE 11.3 entry the computer screen blanks, and nothing happens. Selecting Windows does work upon power-up.
I did not have this 128GB issue with 10.3. What are my options? I am really afraid to install 11.3 on production machines now (running 11.2).
I have installed a new PC system
- OpenSuSE 11.3, 64bit
- AMD Phenomen II X4
- ASUS M4A88TD-V Evo/USB3
- 3 hard disks
- etc.
After start-up with runlevel 3, no applications running, network is up, the overall power consumption of the PC (without monitor) is ca. 70 Watt. After some minutes the monitor goes to power saving (terminal mode, runlevel 3 !), but the power consumption rises to 120 Watt! After pressing a key on the keyboard (e.g. Num) the monitor leaves the power save mode, shows the login screen, and the power consumption falls to 70 Watt. In parallel I have investigated the system via ssh and running top, but I have not observed any abnormal operation. I looked into /proc/acpi/* but I did not find something unusual.
