OpenSUSE Install :: Monitor Cannot Handle Video Card Resolution?

on an IBM x3250
Problem is that after the screen comes up to chose the default version or failsafe, my monitor shows no input. If I delete the VGA 0x031 (i think that's the number) on the Options line in the screen where you chose the version, I get my command line interface.
Can I make the blank VGA options permanent?

Aug 23, 2010I am a newbie on Linux so please give me detailed answers! I am very pleased with OpenSUSE. I installed it without any problem on my desktop and it works very nice. At this time I use a dual boot system, because I still need Vista for some software but gradually I spend more and more in Linux and hopefully one day I will not need anymore Windows.
I desperately need to do some hardware upgrades. I simply want to add a new HDD, some more RAM and to replace my video card. I did this many time under Windows... could you tell me what I have to expect doing this in a dual boot system Vista + OpenSUSE 10.2 ?

Apr 13, 2011The installer has left me with 1,024 by 768 pixels and a driver that will not reach anything like the res my card and monitor will cope with. The display is currently blanking every 30secs or so for a very brief interval as well.
I may have missed something on the install but there didn't seem to be any opertunity to choose either a driver or monitor type. I was eating my dinner through most of it.
I had a brief flirtation with Mandriva and know that linux should be able to nearly fully support my monitor which is 1680x1050 by Belinea. Earlier open suse install gave the option of seting this sort of thing up and listed all of Berlinea's monitors as well.
The card is an nvidia 210 by Asus. Reported as a 200. I do not want to try installing an nvidia driver yet as I understand that there will be problems. Also I have a YAST ipv6 dns problem = no updates.

3. When booting, I get a message saying something like "intel_ips can't find i915 symbols, so graphics turbo is disabled". When googling for this, I see this is a kernel related issue. Since I don't have any understandings of kernels, I thought this is a little too high up for me. What does it mean and how can I fix it, as it slows my boot down quite a bit?

Jun 24, 2010I've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

Feb 4, 2011Just tried and failed miserably to get an Nvidia 6200 based graphics card to play nice with my machine.After putting my ATI Radeon 9200 back in the box, my emulators have gone all kinds of strange.
ZSNES will crash as soon as I attempt to load a game full screen and will leave the screen resolution at the resolution ZSNES was running in (800 x 600, for example.GENS again will alter the screen resolution to whatever it was running in when the emulator is minimised. I'm running 10.10 with 1gb Ram, 128mb ATI Radeon card, P4 3ghz. Was all fine until I tried the new card and I did a fresh install only last week .

Jul 4, 2010I got my hands recently on openSUSE 10.2 (ppc) to put on my b&w powermac g3. i can boot from the cd and it gives me a text prompt and the choices install, rescue, and something to do with the network (which is whatever), and a not-very-helpful help option. so i type install, and my monitor says "input not supported." i figure, "ok, that's cool, i'll just plug in one of my old crt monitors 'cause it must be trying to use a resolution lower than my fancy-schmancy one supports." plug in the old one, restart, type "install," same thing. i'm not new to linux, but i don't really have any options with this prompt that any manner of googling or thread-hunting can uncover which allows me to specify the resolution at which the yast installer starts (or refresh rate, maybe that's it...) or lets me keep it in text mode through the installation. I tried typing "install textmode=1" which seems to do nothing special (same result as just "install") and just "textmode=1" (which is a fundamentally retarded approach, but what else am i supposed to do?). Once the operating system is installed and i can boot into a terminal, i figure can edit the xorg.config to use the resolution i want, but i can't very well install the system without seeing what i'm doing! It's just confusing 'cause it doesn't seem to like any display i give it.

So I could check the 1600 x 1200 option but that is not the correct resolution. And I get a reminder from my screen that the resolution is wrong.

Jun 11, 2011I am currently running all my applications off a HD as I was unable to install the grub bootloader on my ocz pci express card (grub won't install on the pci express card as it is a raid0 array). I would like to use the HD for backup only and run everything off the ocz card - with the exception of booting (which is unfortunate but I didn't manage to make the pci express card boot). How is it possible to tell suse during the installation to create the /boot on the HD and the rest on the pci express card and also to allocate the remainder of the HD as empty storage area??

I got a 9400GT but now F11 won't work.When I try the default option: after the media test, the mouse cursor appears and then nothing happens.If I try the second option "using generic video drive" anaconda crashes after I choose my keyboard layout.The Live CD and preupgrade didn't work either.F10 installs perfectly.

I turned off my computer last night and when I turned it on today it's back to everything being huge and the screen resolution being 640 x 480. Then when I try to change it, it says my video card isn't supported. All I want to do is revert back to my stock video card in my computer and remove the nvidia one since obviously ubuntu isn't working with it.

The official documentation does not list specific resolutions that are supported. My laptop display is detected as "AUO" in the NVidia X Server Settings dialog (Ubuntu 10.04 amd64) and has a native resolution of 1280x800. However, I would like to know what is the maximum resolution that I could use on a display with the VGA adapter irrespective of whether the laptop's display is on. I am guessing the maximum width of 2304 would be for using TwinView with the laptop's 1280-width display next to a 1024 CRT or similar. Surely these cannot be the only supported resolutions. I would like to use a LCD display of width somewhere around 1600 pixels (in particular while turning off the laptop's screen so as to use the external LCD as the primary display) if possible.
SUSE :: Netbook Won't Install OpenSUSE 11.3
Sep 3, 2010I have a Samsung NC-10, installed Win 7 on it and after about 3 months realised that the Intel Atom processor couldn't cope very well. I defected to linux but I can't get the damn thing to boot. I downloaded the iso of openSUSE 11.3 and opened it with Daemon Tools Lite. In my first attempt, I copied and pasted the image using windows explorer onto an 8GB flash drive. I got a "Disk Error" message. (I did change the boot order so that the USB HDD had priority). I got my dad in to help and he formatted the drive to FAT32 and used xcopy in CMD to put the iso image onto the disk. Then I got the "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart" message. I'm annoyed now because I have spent my evenings doing this for the best part of 4 days.

Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...
