OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 KDE Won't Save Display Setting

Nov 26, 2010

Installed 11.3 KDE today on an old Vaio desktop we were given (Duron 900Mhz, 512mb, 40Gb HD, SiS630 onboard video, Trinitron 15" monitor). Everything works fine except it will not save the 800x600 resolution setting. Every time I reboot it is back to 1280x1024 which it thinks is the default resolution. Any tweak to get 11.3 to save that setting?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Won't Save Display Settings

Jun 29, 2010

when I set my screen size (e.g., to 1680X1050) to anything other than the default, it won't save the change permanently. It means I have to change it each time I start OpenSuSE.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Save Display Settings - 2 Screens?

Oct 6, 2010

I have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Display Setting For Two Screens ?

May 16, 2010

Not sure if I'm doing right to post this on this thread but I've got an issue with my laptop screen extension. I have plugged a vga monitor to my laptop for a right display extension. The idea is to put the right extension on the vga monitor but don't why the monitor is know my main screen and my laptop the extension. I have tried to change sides but the laptop is still the extension and not the main one as I want.

Is there a hard way to make this work?

The problem is that I don't know what value to give the DISPLAY variable. Is it the local internal LAN ip address, for my machine? I did try that, and I tested it using, xterm on the solaris machine. It says it can't open the display. I have enabled remote connections on my machine using xhost +.I have to run a performance test on the Solaris box at 7am in the morning... so need to find out how to start the GUI

OpenSUSE Hardware :: System Won't Retain Display Size Setting In SAX2

Jul 28, 2010

System won't retain 16:9 display size setting in YaST (SaX2). I'm using SuSE 11.1 (64 bit).

SaX2 settings as follows:

Monitor is Samsung Syncmaster XL2370-1 (digital). Resolution is set to 1920X1080 (1080p). Diagonal measurement set to 23 inches. Display size indicates 509 m.m. X 286 m.m. (20 3/8" X 11 1/2").

Aspect ratio is entered as 16:9, but after saving and restarting computer it keeps coming back as 16:10.

Samsung literature says 16:9, and measurements above confirm this.

So why does it keep going back to 16:10, and how can I get it to retain 16:9? (Same thing happens on another computer, also running SuSE 11.1, and with a second of these same monitors.)

Example, I tried to create a File.txt on the desktop, then shut down OpenSuse properly. When I boot it again 5 minutes later, the File.txt is not there anymore. CentOS 5 :: Make VLC Save Brightness Setting?

Apr 25, 2009

Totem didn't play .avi movies by default after my new CentOS 5.3 install. In my effort to find a way to fix it I learned in another forum that installing VLC allows almost all video formats to be played. So I added RPMForge to my repository group then I found and installed VLC with no problem.

Now that VLC is installed and I've had a chance to use it, I've learned that it fails to save my brightness setting between launches. This is very frustrating because the default brightness is always too dark, which means I have to go to the controls and reset it every time I launch the software. Does anyone here know how I can save my brightness setting between launches?

General :: Save Display Settings In Kubuntu 10.4?

May 16, 2010

When I change the display resolution and refresh rate in system settings, those values will be reset to default every time I restart the computer. Is there a way to save the values, so that I don't have to change them again every time? I use Kubuntu 10.4. Another problem I have is that when I choose Leave / Sleep (Suspend to RAM), the computer will sometimes be locked, so that it never wakes up again. I can hear when this occurs, because then the cooling fan(s) will stay on. Normally, when Sleep works, the fans are turned off, because the computer goes into energy saving mode. i noticed the occasional sleep problem already in Kubuntu 9.10.

OpenSUSE Install :: Services Fail At Boot - Save To Turn Them Off?

Jun 2, 2011

during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services. Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed. The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I donīt. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?

Install :: Display Fails In Opensuse 11.4 / What To Do?

Mar 25, 2011

I have been with opensuse from 10, and I currently run 11.3 on my desktops. My attempt to install 11.4 failed. It produced a display with many tiny rectangles instead of a gui. I guess there is a discrepancy between the times produced by the x and the y display drivers and the times expected by the display hardware. I can't blame it on the display hardware, though, because I switched to another monitor and got the same error. I did the usual tests from the install screen, and there are no errors. If I run the program in fail-safe mode, the display is text only. In this case there is no x-server. I have not observed that in 11.3 fail-safe.

OpenSUSE Install :: Setting Up A Bootable USB-stick?

Dec 15, 2010

I need some help to set up a bootable USB stick. I have an USB stick, 3.7 gigs big, on which I want to put the OpenSuse Live CD iso, but somehow I am stuck... I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message

Code:

could not find Kernel boot image: gfxboot

Is maybe the boot flag not set, despite the partitionmanager shows it set? Can I set it also afterwards, after I have installed the .iso on the stick (I tried this already, did not change anything)? Or is there something wrong with the .iso?
