OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown / Restart Screen Distortion With Logout Desktop Effect
Mar 28, 2011When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Shutdown / Reboot - Get Screen With Green / Bold Status Messages On The Side
Dec 5, 2009everytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

Jul 2, 2010After login is always volume level set on 100%. Alsactl store and restore works properly. Manually run: sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound reload reset volume level into proper level, but after login to Gnome is always volume level 100%,Here are some logs:

Fedora Installation :: Fresh Install Of F13 - Cannot Shutdown Or Logout
Sep 14, 2010I've installed F13 on a DELL computer. Everything works fine except that under KDE menu if I click on 'shutdown', I have the confirmation windows but the computer never shutdown. Same issue with the the logout button. If I want to stop my commuter I have to open a terminal and type " shutdown now" or "halt".

Jan 8, 2009I would want to record/edit/save music from the microphone (convert a tape to CD). But. I start audacity, leave everything at default, record the music, and play back. It plays agonisingly slow. I can change the sample rate manually such that it sounds good, but this is just a guess (I could for example measure the recording time, and adjust the sample rate after that, such that the displayed time on the timeline fits this time). Why the hell do I need to do this? Why is the recording sample rate = playbe sample rate not producing correct output?

Jun 16, 2010I am building a live USB key using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. No upgrades have been applied. It is as it came in the ISO that was distributed.I would like to create a smooth start-up/logout process where no messages pop up (even briefly) that might confuse someone who is not very tech savvy. I'm referring to the messages that show up right before the login screen during start-up (between usplash and xsplash I think) that say:
"Starting early crypto disks ..."
and also the messages that show up on a black screen right after you initiate logout. It seems to sometimes show system messages including some error messages that can confuse users.Does anyone know of a way to hide, redirect, or disable these messages? I just don't want cryptic messages popping up even briefly that are going to confuse casual users. I'm stuck with version 9.10 since I've made some custom mods and would rather not redo them for a new release.

Mar 12, 2011I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue.When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

Aug 5, 2010I just installed debian unstable with kde 4.4.5 on a new hp desktop. Just about everything is working fine except when I try to logout or shutdown by right clicking on the desktop. No matter which option I choose--logout, shutdown, or restart--the screen goes black and nothing happens. I'm forced to do a hard shutdown or use alt-SysRq-B to reboot. I can reboot or shutdown using the command line when logged into kde.

Jan 31, 2011For some reason in the last few days I can no longer logout of KDE, nor will it let me shutdown the system. The only way out is to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and then shutdown from there. Weird thing is other users can. For me the logout box just disappears and I carry on working or if effects are enabled, the screen blurs and I carry on working. After this the logout box doesn't come back up until I have restarted X (logged out).
I have tried disabling the desktop effects to no availe and I have looked in the messages / kdm logs. So far the only thing I can find is in KDM.log
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

I have no idea if this is at all relevant but there are several threads from Google relating to this and GDM, although no cures as far as I can tell.
I would rather not delete my ~/.kde folder again if at all possible as it takes ages to reset everything back to normal.
Ubuntu :: 10.04 : Shutdown / Logout Panel Missing
Jul 12, 2010I added a Netspeed applet to my top panel. It screwed up my Me Menu and Logout menu, so I removed it, rebooted. However after the reboot my menu's are still screwed up. See the attached screen shot. The Me Menu works however if I click where the logout menu is supposed to be I don't get anything.

I tried to remove libqt4-phonon, but it would also remove half of the system, which isn't the best idea. Someone else suggested to install speex, but it's already installed on my Kubuntu.I'm out of ideas, and I'm not really sure how to reinstall xine and phonon without deleting half of the system like this:

Fedora :: Shutdown/Restart/Logout Buttons Do Not Work After An Update?
Mar 8, 2010I am running Fedora 12 with KDE on an Acer Aspire One netbook.
A recent update has caused the KDE shutdown/restart/logout buttons (found for example through the Fedora -> Leave menu or by pressing the power off switch)to stop working. I am having to shutdown using shutdown -P now command.
So I have the following questions:
a) Has anyone else had this issue and knows a workaround/fix?
b) Does anyone know what package these belong to so I can try an older version?
c) Does anyone know where this package writes its logs, or if I need to install anything for it to do so so I can have a look?
d) Does anyone know the command-line interface to these commands - that may give me either a more gentle workaround than shutdown -P now, or some insight into why the command is no longer working.

Dec 16, 2008I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:
kde-filesystem.noarch 4-20.fc10 installed
kde-settings.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
kde-settings-kdm.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed

I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.

Feb 12, 2011I know how to launch a script whenever I turn off my computer; I just have to add it in the file /etc/halt.local. Such a script is launched just before the computer stops. Now I'd like to launch a script whenever I log out from my account. I'd like that, each time I log out from my account for instance to let someone else work with my computer on his own account, a script is automatically launched. I know how to launch a script when logging IN but not when logging out.

Nov 29, 2010something odd I've noticed with 11.3 on my laptop--if I adjust my resolution through the Monitor applet in the Control Center or if I make changes to my Touchpad settings through the Control Center, the changes are lost when I log into my laptop. Do you think I botched an installation?
I've tried to determine what actual files are affected via the two applets with the thought that maybe I don't have the necessary permissions on them or that I can throw a bandaid on it with a start-up task to overwrite them. Alas, I've got nuthin'

Jun 23, 2015During the boot-sequence of jessie there is more text flying by on the screen (including some errors or warnings) than I can read thorugh fast enough. I don't think this is very serious stuff, and if it were I could always look at dmesg and or syslog i /var/log but I would find it really convenient to log these messages in a file instead of sifting through or grep-ing dmesg.

I installed tried bootlogd but when configuring it to "yes" and rebooting nothing comes up in /var/log/boot.

If you use systemd as your init system, you may need to use systemctl to debug boot problems.
Fedora :: Way To Save Inbox Messages In Encrypted From Gmail Account
Jul 12, 2011I use kmail for fetching and sending mails from my gmail account. The inbox stuffs are saved in ~/.kde/share/ apps/kmail/mail/inbox . It is not saved in encrypted form. One can open it with any editor. Is there a way to make kmail save those fetched messages in encrypted form and when I open the kmail it will show me those mails in decrypted form?
