General :: Fedora KDE - Cannot Save Display Settings
Jun 17, 2010
I have just installed KDE 4.4 on Fedora 12 in addition to GNOME. The default Display resolution is the highest available. I changed it to a lower resolution. However, when I reboot, the resolution switches back to the default setting.

When I change the display resolution and refresh rate in system settings, those values will be reset to default every time I restart the computer. Is there a way to save the values, so that I don't have to change them again every time? I use Kubuntu 10.4. Another problem I have is that when I choose Leave / Sleep (Suspend to RAM), the computer will sometimes be locked, so that it never wakes up again. I can hear when this occurs, because then the cooling fan(s) will stay on. Normally, when Sleep works, the fans are turned off, because the computer goes into energy saving mode. i noticed the occasional sleep problem already in Kubuntu 9.10.

When I try to run the 'system-config-display' program for Fedora 11 and I use the dual head tab, attempting to save the settings results in this:
Traceback (most recent call last):

if card.getDescription() == self.secondVideocardOptionMenu.get_menu().get_acti ve().get_data("NAME"):
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_data'
And it won't save the data.

when I set my screen size (e.g., to 1680X1050) to anything other than the default, it won't save the change permanently. It means I have to change it each time I start OpenSuSE.

I have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).

I was reading a FAQ on Fedora and it states that there is a way that I can Log Out and most importantly for me "Save Settings". Well I selected my user name in the upper right hand corner and selected Quit and then Log Out but I was never asked to "Save Settings". Where can I find this "Save Settings" thing when I log out?

installed Fedora 14 on my desktop a couple of days ago. For the most part, it seems to be fine, but I've got a problem with the 'put display to sleep when inactive for' setting. From the desktop, I've tried going to system/preferences/power management, where I've set the display to go to sleep when inactive for 30 minutes - however, it instead goes to sleep after five minutes. The same applies whether I set it to 10m, 30m, 1hr or never.
Having looked online, someone mentioned gconf-editor as a fix to another issue, so I decided to give that a try as well. Under /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout, I tried setting sleep_display_ac, sleep_display_battery and sleep_display_ups each to 1800 ("The amount of time in seconds before the display goes to sleep" - 30mins, by my maths) on the off-chance that the OS had incorrectly detected the power source, but the display again went to sleep after five minutes.
If it makes any difference, I'm not using a screensaver, and I think the kernel I have installed is 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.i686 (that's what's given in System Monitor). I've also tried running yum update, again just on the off-chance it'd fix something, but everything is up to date.

Since doing the update which included kernel "2.6.32.16-141 fc12-i686 PAE" I can no longer boot into my usual 1280x960 desktop. I can set it using NVidia settings but even though this offers to modify xorg.conf it fails to do so. I have tried running as root and it doesn't then give an error message but when I look at xorg. conf there is no section.showing any specific screen size. It worked ok before the update. In case it is relevant the video card is a Quadro FX1400 with KDE. Also the whole program seems rather unstable since the update.

I'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050". An screenshoot of xfine2: [URL].

I have a Debian machine running IceWM. I want to set it up so when userA signs in they get a screen resolution of 1280x1024 and normal size icons and normal size cursors. Then I want it setup so if UserB signs in they get a screen resolution of 800x600 larger icons and larger mouse cursor icons. How can I customize the display settings per user with IceWM? I did not see where I can set these options in ~/.icewm/preferences.

Debian Squeeze: Linux jilldando 2.6.32-trunk-486 #1 Sun Jan 10 05:53:18 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
gdm for desktop manager
I have 4 differences situations, 2 work, 2 do not: So I think my server box (Jill) is messed up.
1) On the server desktop, I can open a console as the gui logged in user and type: xeyes and those eyes appear.echo $DISPLAY :0.0
2) If from that console I log in as another user (ros) and then type:
xeyes I get:
Error: Can't open display:
echo $DISPLAY
(NOTHING)
so that will be a problem.
3) If I ssh into my offices remote server from my XP machine with putty and x-forwarding and then type:
xeyes and those eyes appear.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:11.0
4) If I ssh into Jill from my XP machine with putty and x-forwarding and then type:
xeyes I get:
Error: Can't open display: echo $DISPLAY (NOTHING)so that will be a problem.
This leads me to think I have something messed up on my Linux box Jill.
I have tried setting DISPLAY= to various values but same error, so this led me to believe something else needs setting. Especially as env yields alot more in situation 1 than in situation 2.
What can I set where, that will allow me run xeyes (anything X) in situations 2 and 4, just like in situation 1 and 3?

3. a USB audio device (i am using this one)
I normally shut off the system each night. Next day, I have to go through the pulse-audio mixer and re-set all of the audio settings. They are apparently not being saved. I've searched the forum for 'save audio' and similar terms but no joy.

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
The problem is that everytime i restart the netbook the "Input so" switch automatically to "Front mic" instead to keep the setting "Int mic".
I tried to use sudo alsa ctl store but nothing change...Maybe there is another way for to set "input so" to "Int mic" by default.Im using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop 32 bit.

how I can save xinput settings? I'm running Peppermint Linux on an eeepc 701.After a few weeks, I've finally figured out which settings to configure with the xinput command to get my touchscreen working correctly. However, when restart the netbook all the settings are lost and I have to reconfigure each time. I've found threads saying to save settings in xorg.conf file, but apparently my system doesn't have this file.

I'm using opensuse 11.3, added repo lxde, updated everythng. So far, nothing.
