OpenSUSE Install :: Reset To Live CD Settings
May 20, 2011I had a machine with 11.3, and tested 11.4 live CD. It looked good, network worked and so did compiz. But then I installed, and I can't see any wireless networks, the screen flickers and compis doesn't work. Is there any way to simple reset all settings so that they become the live-cd settings?

Nov 20, 2010Im trying out popular distros running on Gnome.. to see possible installation candidate And having one problem with OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome out of the box...I can not enable desktop effects.. it says it can not be done on my hardware configuration...My hardware: AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, Ati Radeon X600 256MB, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD...In every other distro I tried from live CD.. I could enable desktop effects.Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? No problems in Fedora, Ubuntu...

Nov 27, 2010Whenever I tick boxes it doesn't save anything after closing. When I clicked on Advanced Search it froze (twice) after showing a progress bar. I got this error when clicking on preferences:

By default nothing is ticked but I think there are some effects already enabled on my system.

Oct 6, 2010I have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).

Feb 10, 2010I managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing.For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings.So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?

Oct 28, 2010Sometimes, running "nvidia-settings" will cause the whole desktop to freeze for about 5-10 seconds, spike the Xorg CPU usage up to 100%, until the settings appear where everything goes back to normal.
Running "nvidia-settings" from a terminal does not show any output and restarting X does not help. Any ideas how to figure out what is happening, any places to look for log files?

Aug 14, 2011I've been trying to get familiar with this over the past 24 hours or so. I assume I've been somewhat successful in what I'm attempting to do, as I can work my way around a bit now and use some terminal commands. However, there is this display problem I seem to be encountering with certain windows which is extremely putting off. When I click options like 'File' or 'Edit' in a window, this is what I get. Here are the screenshots below.
This is what I get when I click the 'Volume' button in the Panel at the bottom of the screen. I have tried changing the Desktop Appearance Settings, Theme Settings but nothing seems to work. Although this is not a performance issue, it is hampering my vision of the various available options, and I would like to resolve it at once.

Jan 15, 2011I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

Mar 11, 2010I have read and read and googled for my specific problem and nothing exactly matches. I have a Nvidia 8400GS, running SuSe 11.1, kernel 2.6.27.45-0.1.1,, Nvidia Drivers 193.5, KDE 3.??. It seems like about every third or fourth time I boot up I have to rebuild and install the Nvidia drivers (the hard way). When I get up and running again, use the Nvidia Control panel and save the settings to Nvidiaxxxxxxx.RC file. Why does this keep happening, any suggestions or threads that might answer this problem?? Also I can't get my wallpapers to fill the desktop, they are tiled sometimes and I can't change them. One other thing is I am having trouble with the screensavers, they won't start, and I like to delete some of them?

Jun 17, 2010I have just been trying to fix a friends comp, they had Windows crash, and it wouldn't reinstall properly. So I thought I'd put Ubuntu 10:04 on it instead. I burnt the CD today from an ISO that I've used perfectly fine in the past. When I finally got it to boot into the trial desktop. The install button on the desktop wouldn't work. Everything else that I tried to run would run fine. is there some way that I can run it from the terminal or could this indicate a fault in the Live CD?

Jul 11, 2010I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's old desktop. Her gateway laptop's motherboard just died on her, and until we can figure out a real solution she's using this old desktop that was running Windows XP. It was her parent's and it's an eMachine. So, meh. It's whatever.
I have an Ubuntu disc from Canonical and one from burning the .iso image. I've been fighting with it all evening trying to just get the thing to boot. It starts up, shows a purple screen with an Ubuntu logo on the bottom. If I don't hit Enter it will go into a crazy cycle of black screen command line things. It says various errors, but moves too fast for me to see anything that is actually happening. However, if I do hit Enter it takes me to the "Try Ubuntu without installing, etc." screen.
No matter what I hit from the selection, it goes to the black screen with random command line entries floating about. Various error, various actions being done. If I hit to run as Live CD or Install it, it will eventually stop and say "Welcome to Ubuntu! *insert website address here*" and give me the chance to type in commands.
ONCE during the power on/power off cycles of me fighting did the Live CD actually run. It ran nicely, and I clicked the icon to install Ubuntu and it got to 49% complete and said there was an error with the disc. I installed Ubuntu on my desktop last week with the same disc flawlessly. It ran with the real Ubuntu disc, the burnt ones do nothing.
I could tell you system specs but Windows was erased during the Live CD stint and there are no stickers on the front to tell you. But I can crack it open and look if needed.

1. a builtin (broken)
2. an HDMI on my graphics board
3. a USB audio device (i am using this one)
I normally shut off the system each night. Next day, I have to go through the pulse-audio mixer and re-set all of the audio settings. They are apparently not being saved. I've searched the forum for 'save audio' and similar terms but no joy.
