I have OpenSuSe 11.2 64-bit installed on my HP Compaq 6730s laptop. When I'm trying to switch user black screen appears and my system does not react on any key combinations (ctrl+alt+del; ctrl+alt+F7 ...). This was not reproduced before ATI driver installation.

With OpenSuSE 11.2, I would have a guest account running skype, and a media account running mythtv (both users logged in at the same time using switch user). I had skype on auto answer incoming calls, and I remember watching a movie when I suddenly heard my Dad's voice appear calling my name. That was cool!
Now that I'm using OpenSuSE 11.3 (both were using KDE), skype only plays audio when that user's session is active. Switching to the media account will prevent skype from starting to play any sound. Switch back, sound is normal. If I remember correctly, now the skype audio cuts out as soon as I switch user.
I also have a tv capture card which only STARTS to captures analog audio when the media session is active, mythtv being run by the user media. Once the show is started to record with sound, we can switch users and the show continue to record with sound.
The only thing that should be configured differently from the default install is that I compiled mythtv (it wasn't available as an rpm when I upgraded to 11.3, and haven't bothered to check since).

I have three Suse Linux pcs on my network.
I'll call them desktop, media center and laptop.
I am logged in to my desktop , I want to open a new session and log in to my media center.
From GUI, I select application launcher - leave -switch user and get a fresh kdm greeter screen.
On the Greeter screen, I select Menu - Remote Login
A window opens displaying three machines - my desktop, my laptop and my media center.
When I move the mouse into the new window to select the media center as the new target machine, the window immediately closes.
I have Xdmcp access enabled in kdmrc on all three systems(and rebooted).
This did work fine back when I was on KDE45 and KDE46.
Is there a new permission or setting now under KDE47?
I have a primary language, Italian, and I want also use a secondary language, English. I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard. I switched language in both kde system settings>Regional & language and in yast system>language leaving the keyboard layout Italian, but in the kde menu (the lizard on the left of panel) the groups of applications (multimedia, giochi, sistema) are in Italian and yast too (impostazioni amministratore), instead others are in English.
1)is this a bug or I forgot something?
2)which is the differences switching languages by yast and by kde system settings?
3)Is it possible to switch language and don't restart or logout the system?
Cisco vpn client would freeze the system. The only way to recover is to do a hard reset. The funny thing is I had it working before, so it may be random. However, it just happened 3 times in a row and I haven't tried again. I'll try again tonight. I'm pretty sure I'm running the latest client for 64bit linux systems. I'll confirm that when I get a chance, as well as my kernel.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI`m running openSUSE 11.2, with GNOME 2.28 - made a fresh install.
Everything went smooth and nice, and I did not made any changes to my system, when I saw that GNOME System Monitor freezes when clicking on the "System" tab.
I upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.
After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.
i have running more than 50 servers with openSUSE 11.2 for a long time without any problems. After upgrading 30 server to 11.3 some of them are freeezing after one or two days. I can ping, but i cannot log in. At the console i can type in the user and the nothing happens, system has to reboot.
All servers are Hewlett Packard Proliant G4,G5,G6 with 32bit and 64bit. No errors or hints in the systemlog.
I love opensuse as it's much snappier than MINT. But my system 11.3 is freezing while booting. I pressed ESC during splash and can see messages on the screen. The last message is ATA3 Exception EMASK. I have uploaded the /var/boot.msg here klogd 1.4.1, log source = ksys - Suse Freeze - CuQAd3dg - Pastebin. There are no other log files!

I have to powercyle the VM to reestablish a connection i.e. to CUPS by browser or to open a new session by ssh. Why SLES crashes on hyper-V or what I can do here?
The system frequently freezes the screen. The mouse is still moveable but there is no reaction on any click. Keyboard does not work either (pushing Num-Lock does not toggle the Num-Lock light on the keyboard). However, Alt-Print-b works for a reboot. The only other way out is to turn of the computer.I had this effect some time ago where I thought it was a problem due to the NVIDIA graphics driver. Since then, I changed back to the standard VESA driver and thought the problem would be gone. Just a thought
I toggled through the log files in /var/log which had the file date/time of the crash but I could not find any hint.Which log files could I look as well to dig for the problem? Or any idea for such an effect?
sometimes (not often, like once a week) in my F13, X freezes: the pointer still moves but I can't click and I can't switch to VT. The only thing I can do is power down holding the power key! The system is not frozen (Once I've ssh into it), so I think I can avoid this drastic shutdown. I remember the option "DontZap" was used in Xorg.conf to permit the use of the CTRL+ALT+DEL to kill X, now is missing. Can I restore it, somehow? Otherwise can I have a way out from X? In my opinion the use of the power button is unacceptable

i have installed the new 11.2 OS, every thing went well until i switched on the desktop effect, when i clicked the apply button the whole system freezed, i had to manually switch of the system and re-started. everything went well until the username and password was entered, at the time of the progress bar the system dint respond, but the curser was moving but very slow moment was observed. i tried to repair the system with the repair system option, i tried repairing the file system i got the following error after pressing the help button

Im running opensuse 11.2 on Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 64Bit, KDE 4.3.1 with 4GB RAM, Intel duo core processor with Intel graphics card. I initially had opensuse 11.1, which i removed and installed 11.2. Initially everything.Then came the problem, the system starts up fine but then after a few hours freezes, monitor powers off and it wont accept commands from the keyboard or mouse. Meanwhile the lights (caps lock, numeric and scroll) on the keyboard blink. The power light is still on and i can hear the hard disk turning.
I have to forcefully turn the power off and restart but can freeze again after random periods.I do lengthy and demanding computations and its common for the PC to run for weeks without turning it off.
I've been using this scanner on various suse builds all the way back to version 8. This week I installed OpenSuse on a brand new computer and when I run xsane, I receive these messages.

i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn't working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn't work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.

The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought the wireless PCI network card WMP600N from Linksys. I tried to connect with my router, but no success. The correct driver is installed(RT2800), the necessary package WPA_supplement is also installed. My providers settings are WPA-PSK with a shared key. Key encryption is TKIP. I can't choose TKIP in the Yast network menu. so i chose passphrase.
the weird thing is that the wifimanager says WEP is on but it's not, at least not in my router and i did not setup WEP to. see picture 6. i had to use manual boot "ifup wlan0" because when i use boot at startup the whole systeem freezes. anyway, when i use ifup wlan0 as root in the konsole, the system also freezes. i have explained it clearly, please take a look a the pictures.

Since I upgraded to Lucid, I am dealing with serious instabilities related to my wireless card. What happens is that when there is a lot of wireless activity the computer freezes. It is a complete freeze, the mouse stops moving, if something was coming out of the speakers it keeps echoing, and the only solution is to turn off the computer. My wireless card is Intersil ISL3890/ISL3886. My whole computer is an HP z555. I'm thinking that is should be a bug in the wireless adapter driver, which is p54pci. The only solution I can think of is to blacklist it and set up ndiswrapper. I am not very comfortable with this solution since a native linux driver should be better than ndiswrapper.
I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

In FC13, when one user logs into GNOME and locks the screen, there is a "switch user" button so someone else can return to the log in screen and log in as well. But in KDE, there is only two buttons "Unlock" (for the current user) and "Cancel"

So the splash occurs I put user name and password but the system try to enter and later it comes back. I try from CLI, I make startx from command line, the same situation. Sometime the system informs me about a error (a temporary file from /tmp(.X0~ )I must remove, I did but next time it tells me that it can't load one module (it gives me a number).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was logged in, but had not used the computer for about 48 hours. When I 'woke' the system, I could see that Thunderbird and Firefox were active, just as I had left them. I moved the mouse, the screen went black and the mouse pointer was visible (and could move). The system stayed like this for about 2 minutes, then wend down completely. I cut power, booted and got the login screen. Each time I put in my password, it looks as if it is loading but then just goes right back to the login screen. I have no problem logging in as root.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs everyone knows, the graphic user can be swithed with Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or F1 in Fedora). There are also a few text mode consoles - Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6.
Fortunately, there is a Switch User button when the screen is locked from Gnome with the default screensaver.
The question is how can a new graphical user be switched from console (Ctrl+Alt+F2...F6) if the screen is locked by some other screensaver which does not have this function?
In our cluster, RedHat4 & 5 machines, if someone locks the computer and walks away no body can use it. Is there a feature in RedHat5, Gnome, KDE etc that would allow for the option of switching users at the lock screen, so more than one person can be logged in?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAll servers mentioned below run OpenSuSE, either 10 or 11.I am currently working on a few scripts that are meant to be used as part of a continuous integration setup. I am trying to keep these scripts reasonably secure, and so I have made sure that all the servers run these scripts only as a specific user (user1) that has permissions to basically nothing else. The problem I am currently running into is that I need to start and stop tomcat as user1 but this user doesn't have permissions to the tomcat rectory (only tomcat has execute permissions). I have a temporary workaround in place while I work on the scripts (I have an SSH key in place that allows me to SSH from user1o tomcat without a password and execute my commands that way) but it is not very secure. I have tried adding the following line to /etc/sudoers:
