OpenSUSE Network :: Ethernet Card Wasn't Working - System Freezes

Dec 27, 2009

i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn't working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn't work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.

OpenSUSE Network :: Ethernet Card Missing After Upgrade?

Jul 1, 2011

I have a strange problem. An old PC is my home server. On the PC I had in the long past 2 NICs. For the last year or so, I had only one NIC installed, a Compex with 8139too module which run just fine. After the upgrade to 11.4, 32bit of course, with zypper dup, I saw that I had no internet and no network connection to the server. So, I logged on the server and found that rcnetwork could not start the eth0 and eth3(!). OK, a mistake I thought. Enter Yast and solve it. Unfortunately, yast reports 2 cards! I removed all of them, rebooted but nothing. lspci reports 2 cards, while I have NONE installed on the motherboard!hwinfo --netcard the same! yast the same! So, the OS "knows" that I have 2 NICs, while I definitely have none!

Checked if /etc/udev/rules.d/70- had any left data from the past, but the file was empty. Checked the /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts nothing again. In principle, the openSUSE 11.4 believes that I have 2 cards (and with wrong MACs, obviously) and I cannot make it rescan the PCI bus to find that I have nothing! I am sure that some garbages are left somewhere but I don't know where to look at. it is very critical to have that server but on-line and in my LAN.

OpenSUSE Install :: 10.3 Network - Configure Ethernet Connection Or Wireless Card

Oct 2, 2010

I installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - "Atheros Communications L1 Gigabit Ethernet (rev B0)" Wasn't Recognized

May 5, 2011

having used SuSE Linux ever since the April 1995 release, I thought installing 11.4 would be a straightforward task. Since it wasn't, I'm summarising here my experience. My PC is built around a 3-year old Asus P5B-plus mainboard, i.e. certainly not brand-new hardware.

1 - on installation, my "Atheros Communications L1 Gigabit Ethernet (rev b0)" wasn't recognized, so I had to "modprobe atl1" from one of the consoles available during installation. That worked but the installer didn't pick up the fact that network was now available.

2 - after completion of the installation, online-updating for the first time and installing the nvidia driver for my "nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300 GS] (rev a1)" the KDE desktop showed the "blank desktop with mouse pointer" syndrome. Googling yielded that desktop effects had to be disabled in the kwinrc configuration file.

3 - logging in today after an online update, firefox (MozillaFirefox-4.0.1-0.2.2.x86_64) segfaults on start-up while loading the default website (opensuse.org). firefox will run in safemode but it won't run in normal mode, even with all add-ons disabled.

Now I don't have a useable system after a couple of hours of trying. Fortunately, I have a working installation of openSUSE 11.2 but I believe that updates for that distribution will be stopped shortly.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 - Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Network Card 88E8072

May 12, 2010

I have a dual boot system (Suse 10.0 and Windows XP Pro) in my notebook. My notebook is toshiba m358, which has a Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Network Card (Marvell 88E8072) on it. My problem is this: in Windows XP Pro, the network card works well, but in openSUSE, the light on the network card does not turn on. I believe that there is no driver for the network card. I have tried several ways to solve this problem:

1. Download Marvell 88E8072's driver from "[URL]", whose name is "install_v10.85.3.3.tar.bz2", and then install it with following commands:

Code:
# tar xfvj install_v10.85.3.3.tar.bz2
# cd DriverInstall
# ./install.sh .....

Code:
# modprobe sk98lin
# WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
After I reboot the openSUSE, the light of network card is still off.

2. Follow "[URL]" to configure the Marvell 88E8072. It also does not work.

OpenSUSE Network :: Ethernet Not Working After Upgrade To 11.4?

Jun 12, 2011

system:
destop
openSUSE 11.4 KDE
single wired network connection
running as a headless server
upgrade from 11.1

Problem: I had a bunch network services running under 11.1 with KDE. Now after upgrade to 11.4 full network functionality is broken. I was using ifup but now is broken. Between ifup and NetworkManager I can demonstrate the full required range of functionality but not all at the same time (the union of functionality of each provides the full required functionality, but not individually). WOL does work in all cases.

With 'ifup', it seems that everything is 'working' as before, but services are broken when accessed from outside. eth0 up and fuctioning with statically assigned IP. Outgoing connections seem to work - I can browse the web. But trying to access services from outside is broken. VNC is rejected. Connecting to SMB shares reports login error. TFTP doesn't respond. SSH connection is rejected.

Although sometimes it will get in a state that everything except VNC works (connects but then is dropped upon login with "Error while waiting for server message") but I can't consistently reproduce this state other than it seems to happen after some extended period of time.

I have verified the firewall is off and apparmour is off.

On the other hand, everything works with 'NetManager' (both KDE and Plasmoid) with no other changes. The problem here is that it does not seem possible to set a static IP address - eth0 doesn't show up in the list of wired interfaces to be able to select and edit. That's problem 1 - I need a static IP. (I suppose I could reserve an address at the DHCP server, but a static IP works 100% to get the right address). The other problem is that neither NetManager starts at boot and only start _after_ login at the console - that won't work as I never log in at the console. (I suppose I could set it up to login automatically into a console or something but I would rather not)

OpenSUSE Network :: Linksys Wireless WMP600N - Error Suse 11.2 - System Freezes

Feb 13, 2010

I bought the wireless PCI network card WMP600N from Linksys. I tried to connect with my router, but no success. The correct driver is installed(RT2800), the necessary package WPA_supplement is also installed. My providers settings are WPA-PSK with a shared key. Key encryption is TKIP. I can't choose TKIP in the Yast network menu. so i chose passphrase.

the weird thing is that the wifimanager says WEP is on but it's not, at least not in my router and i did not setup WEP to. see picture 6. i had to use manual boot "ifup wlan0" because when i use boot at startup the whole systeem freezes. anyway, when i use ifup wlan0 as root in the konsole, the system also freezes. i have explained it clearly, please take a look a the pictures.

OpenSUSE Network :: System Doesn't Recognize Video Card

Mar 26, 2010

So the only experience I have with Linux is all from Ubuntu, and I just spontaneously decided that I needed a change...two days later my triple boot Macbook Pro got slimmed down to a dual boot OSX/OpenSUSE 11.2 machine. But there are some general problems, and I have absolutely no idea how to solve them. First, wireless isn't recognized at all...there isn't even a space for wireless connections. Second, I haven't been able to get compiz to work yet, and I can only suspect that the system doesn't recognize my video card, or the driver isn't installed. Yet again, no idea how to fix this.

I have since installed Ubuntu 9.10, and up to a point everything is fine and looks great. However when I connect an ethernet cable up to the PCI card (in the hope of connecting with the Internet), nothing happens. I am thinking that I need Ubuntu drivers for the PCI card ? or does Ubuntu 9.10 come with drivers and I need to go into the 'engine room' to sort it all out ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Card Not Working In 10.04 Server

Jul 18, 2010

I've set up 10.04 Server so that I could install directly to a command line, due to the fact that Desktop was crashing during the install every time. The installation goes fine, except for the networking portion. DHCP fails every time I try it. So I set up a static IP as an alternative. Once installation completes, none of the network-oriented tools (ping, telnet) work. I've tried pinging my router and I get 'Destination Host Unknown'. This is true if I change to a DHCP oriented setup as well.

The router sees that the machine is there, as indicated by the slowly blinking connection light meaning that it's hooked up to *something* but there's no activity. Also, networking did work within Windows before I nuked it, so I know it has the ability to operate correctly. I'm at a loss, mostly due to my own newness and ignorance of how to start tackling this within this environment.

Networking :: SME+Compaq Presario - Can Only Get One Ethernet Card Working At A Time

May 25, 2010

I have an older Compaq Presario S6000CL, specs for it are here:

*Product Specifications Compaq Presario S6000CL Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Motherboard and bios here:

*Motherboard Specifications, A7V8X-LA (Kamet 2) Compaq Presario S6000CL Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

I am trying to get SME Server set up as a private server/gateway. Problem is no matter what I do I can only get one ethernet working at a time and only to the internet, not the local network. I tried both SME Server 7.4 and 8.0 beta 5 witht he same result. Now of course I checked the ethernet cards. The two I have now on it do work. One of them is the onboard ethernet the other one is in the second pci slot. They jsut don't work at the same time. (also I am familiar with SME and I had it configured correctly. Even if I messed up the order of the cards it is easy enough to just get up and switch the cables, reboot, etc.) I thought maybe there was a jumper setting or an over ride of some sort to let me use two ethernet cards. <I previously had all of this set up with an old HP computer (came with windows 98 originally.) But that computer decided it was time to retire to the road side.> It seems that it should just work. Any ideas on what I am missing or what I can do?

Edit:Spent another hour trying to get it to work and still nothing. It is picking up both ethernet cards just fine, I just updated sme 8 beta5 so the internet is working fine. I just can't get the local ethernet card to do anything at all, even though it is showing up as a green ok at boot. I checked the bios and I am not seeing anything there. It had an option to enable/disable LAN (which is enabled but I tried both and using to PCI ethernet cards. Didn't do anything different.) It has a Local LAN boot rom option, tried it enabled and disabled (Disabled now.) and nothing. I turned off the serial and parallel ports (doesn't make a difference either way.) I looked all over the motherboard and the only thing I can find is the jumper to reset the password. If a computer that was at least 12 years old could run SME and don't see why this one can't, it is half that age and a much better computer hardware wise.

Fedora Hardware :: AWE64 ISA Card \ Wasn't Recognised At Boot Up?

Jan 26, 2010

I'm running FC 12, on a Pentium III PC. This has a 440BX motherboard with an AWE64 Gold ISA card. It wasn't recognised at boot up, I've installed the GUI ALSA mixer, inisitally it shows no sound device.Searching around the forums stumbled across the command:modprobe snd-sbaweThis one line command worked fine (no errors), enabled the volume control, and ALSA mixer GUI gave loads of nice sliders. Pushing these up I found that basic sound was working fine (eg playing Flash video within Firefox). I don't need any other features of the AWE64 right now (might like MIDI port one day).

However, each time I reboot the system it forgets, and I have to run the comand again (and tweak up the volume in the mixer, particularly for PCM).I tried adding a file called awe64 in /etc/init.d, with the contents:

#!/bin/bash
#modprobe snd-abawe

(and chmod +x awe64) but this doesn't seem to get run, or has no effect.I tried adding a file to /etc/modprobe.d but this just gave errors - I think this is the right approach though. What should I do please?
