Happens on Jessie AMD64 with mate, I can't go to a tty to kill mate system monitor, mouse stop working, keyboard stop working. I tried changing the theme, and now it freeze opening mate system monitor.
View 0 RepliesYesterday I have upgraded from repo and there was an update regarding mate-desktop and mate-desktop-common to version 1.10.1 (while the rest of the packages are 1.8.x). Well I upgraded and now I cannot start mate-display-properies to configure my monitor, it crashes all the time.

I've been testing Mate since couple of weeks on my Jessie and now I'm convinced that is the perfect DE for me. So I would like to uninstall Gnome 3 without disturbing Mate and my system as well because both DE share many dependencies. If this is very risky I would like at least get rid of all gnome packages which are not shared with Mate.

The answer "this is normal" is unfortunatly not getting censored. Even linux must be able to take heavy load without crashing.

The vlc-problem could be solved by the way: It seems my MESA-installation caused OpenGL to work. As output in vlc, everything runs as it should now.
I've got a problem since I changed from wired to wireless. It doesn't happen repeatably, but usually when more than one application is trying to use the internet connection at the same time (eg iceweasel, icedove, java programs etc). Suddenly, all internet connectivity is lost, and the applications start to hang. Then I can try to close them but they don't close properly and still appear in the ps list. I can pull out the USB dongle (TP-Link TL-WN821N) but nothing responds any more, I can't disconnect using the taskbar icon, and when I try to kill -9 the iceweasel or icedove or java processes, even as root it does nothing.
Eventually the only thing I can think to do is to shut down. Except, when I try to shut down it says it can't stop the avahi daemon, and draws a little tree of the things which are hanging off the avahi daemon (like the apps trying to use the network), and says it can't stop them either. Then it tries to unmount the drives but fails to do that too, and doesn't umount either / or /home. Now the login prompts don't respond any more either (although I can still cycle through non-responsive tty screens), and the only thing left is to hold the finger on the power button.
I have configured my system to suspend whenever I close the lid, by using the Power Management applet provided by my desktop manager (see my later comment). However, sometimes, when I reopen the lid, I see that the laptop is switched on but it won't resume, while the CPU heats up. I must shutdown forcefully. What could be causing this?
I have found this thread [URL] .... in regard to OpenSUSE. Is it relevant for Debian as well?

Clarified that the suspend is a user-level setting.
I`m running openSUSE 11.2, with GNOME 2.28 - made a fresh install.
Everything went smooth and nice, and I did not made any changes to my system, when I saw that GNOME System Monitor freezes when clicking on the "System" tab.
each and everytime I close Minecraft window it puts my 1024x768 15" screen from 75hz to 60hz and this occurs EVERYTIME I close Minecraft, I have tried uninstalling then re-installing Minecraft.

Ctr+Alt+Del does nothing and the only way to shut the computer down and restart the system is by holding the power button down for a long time. View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed the Grooveshark add-on on XBMC (downloaded from their official PPA). When I fire it up (choose it and press Enter/Return/Newline) XBMC freezes. I had to get out of it by doing Ctrl-Alt-F1, logging in and rebooting.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Latitude E6410 which I can boot from an Iomega external hard drive when I want to run Linux on it. It is a work issued Windows XP laptop and when I travel, I am more comfortable with Linux, so I created a dual boot option without touching their hardware. The external hard drive plugs in to the USB ports and the BIOS picks it up as the primary boot media, although the internal drive is still present. (That is the desired outcome).The problem is that the system periodically locks up solid and only a forced power off will get it to respond. The system seems to go into a kernel panic and fails to write anything before dying. The system completely locks up and stops responding to mouse and keyboard. It also seems to drop off the network. When I look at the logs after restarting, nothing at all shows up related to a kernel panic or anything else. To further complicate the diagnosis, on the reboots, sometimes the boot process locks up at "Starting GDM3", sometimes it doesn't, and wont for several attempts but eventually will boot to gnome. Some times it runs fine for a few hours, sometimes for only a few minutes. Can anyone recommend a way to diagnose this?I am trying to run Debian 6.0 32-bit with the defaults.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAs the title says, I have tried both of them and they both freeze my system with no apparent reason. They freeze by just looking at them in the fist few minutes after startup and a hard reboot is needed. So I keep coming back to 11.6. Does anyone else have the same problem or is it just my system? By the way I have an HD 6970 in an AMD CPU based system running squeeze. And the reason why I keep installing new drivers and don't stick with 11.6 is a futile hope that anti-aliasing will work with compiz enabled.
View 10 Replies View RelatedLubuntu 11.04 on laptop (PIII ATI Rage Mobility). Playing a WMV or MPEG file, system freezes when playback ends. I have not tried any other formats.
I looked at mplayer Preferences
In the Player tab, "Video Output" was blank - I set it to "x11"
This corrected the freeze problem, at least the first time that I tried it. However, it did not seem to persist through multiple plays of the MPEG file, whether or not accompanied by an mplayer quit and rerun or a reboot, even though I did not change the parameters. I tried setting vo=x11 in the etc/mplayer/config file, but that did not help. It is sporadic. It will work a few times with the MPEG file, then hang, for no apparent reason. One thing it does seem to do consistently is hang on the WMV file, regardless of the vo setting, and on both files, when vo is not specified (what I started with). This is a time-consuming task, with a reboot on every failure, and I have run out of ideas on what to try next. When it hangs on the MPEG file I noticed that the elapsed time ends up at 20 sec, even though the video total time is 16 sec. When it doesn't hang, the elpased time goes to 20 sec, then returns to 16 sec.
I have Debien 7.8 Wheezy installed on my laptop, along with the GNOME desktop. As I absolutely hate the new GNOME layout I want to install MATE so I can get the classic GNOME 2 desktop back. But I have no internet connection here at home (I only have my phone for internet and I can't tether it).
So I'm wondering if it's possible for me to download all the packages and install MATE offline? I don't even know what all the packages are that I need.I can download the packages with my phone with no issue.
I installed Debian on my laptop with the Debian DVDs in case you were wondering. when I downloaded the Debian DVD ISOs, I only saw three ISO files, but the documentation said that it's a 10 DVD set. What happened to the other 7 DVD ISOs?
I recently installed 8.1, the Gnome Classic DE isn't anything near worth using now. What happened to The Gnome Classic that I know and love? I don't mind MATE too much, if only the applets I put in the panel would stay put between logins instead of manifesting wherever The OS decides IT wants them instead of where I placed and locked them.
I'm looking for a way to get back the Gnome Classic I know and love from Wheezy (first choice), or get the applets in MATE to stay where I put them (second choice).
In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.
My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB

Are there any sound schemes for GNOME and MATE? Like different system sounds and a logon-logoff sound and a system sound for when I empty the trash bin? Like the way Ubuntu does, just with different sounds. I'm not that crazy about Ubuntu's system sounds.
I know I don't need it, I think it would just make a nice addition to my laptop and later my desktop.
This is probably a bit of an unusual combination, but I'm using Digikam on Maté. Maybe the problem I'm about to describe just isn't an issue on KDE.
I have my photos in digikam, separated out into various folders. I use the timeline view or the tag view to show just a subset of photos, where the photos are scattered across different folders. Then I want to take those photos and make copies of them onto somewhere else outside of digikam's control, like a USB stick or an external drive or even just another folder. I do not want to change the photos which are in digikam, and I don't want to lose the folder information, tags etc.
I select the photos I want, and choose "Edit"->"Copy". But in my file manager Caja there is no "Paste" command available. I guess that Digikam has copied them into a KDE clipboard and Caja can't find them.
I can drag them into another folder of digikam, and that offers me a pop menu - do I want to move or copy? I can also cancel this if I realise it's not what I want to do.
I can also drag them to Caja, but then I have to be really careful. If I just let go (expecting the move/copy prompt), then it just goes right ahead and moves the pictures out of digikam, which is absolutely awful. The photos are gone from digikam, I lose what folders they were in, I lose what tags they had, and there's no confirmation. I have to spend ages moving the photos back where they came from, trying really hard not to lose any, and even then the tags are gone. I guess the file timestamps are destroyed too but I guess that's not so important. It's just a difficult task depending on how many photos there were and how many different folders, and how jumbled the filenames were.
Ok, so now I know that I have to hold the Ctrl key down when I drag, but still the mouse can accidentally let go before I press the key (I can only press the Ctrl after I start dragging, otherwise it deselects the photo I drag with).
The whole thing just seems fragile and error-prone, and there must be a way to make this less painful.
Maybe I can use something other than caja which handles the drop bit of the drag-and-drop better?
Maybe I can configure digikam to temporarily "lock" the photo database to prevent any accidental changes to the files?
Maybe I can configure digikam to confirm before moving files like this, so I can say "cancel"? (I already have "confirm when moving to wastebin" and "confirm when permanently deleting")
Maybe there's another mechanism for copy/paste from digikam to the file system which is more reliable? Some kind of export with a plain copy?
I'm guessing one popular response might be "don't use digikam with Maté", but I like both so that's tricky to resolve.
Failing any of those, is there any separate tool to search through a tree of photos, select those from a given timerange, and copy them to somewhere else? Either keeping the original folder structure or flattening it?
So i just finally installed Debian Jessie OS, replacing Ubuntu. But now it is running extremely slow. It's not internet connection. The internet speed is running fine (Videos load quickly), but it's like the system freezes every 30 seconds or so. A video can be fully loaded but still stops and starts constantly. Just browsing the internet, or non-internet things do the same also. I switched back to Ubuntu to see if it was different on there, but Ubuntu is running fine.

Since the first day the mose keeps disappearing. For example when I click on something, the mouse disappears and only comes back when I move it. Sometimes it already disappears when hovering over a button (especially annoying when it happens while you try to resize a window).
That problem did not happen for example in LXDE, which I installed just to test that.
I did install MATE 1.8 on several laptops/PCs so far, never hat that problem. Maybe it's because of quite recent hardware?

I think it is impossible to do it by installing firstly MATE and the GNOME - both desktops should be crashed.
How to remove completely GNOME to be without any desktop environment? I can go to thext mode and run commands to delete the desktop but there is something more that I should do?

I am new to Debian and Linux all together. At work, we have dual even triple minitors at our stations. I have not seen this on linux until I went to a co-workers house. I wanted to do the same and I have two monitors. I asked how but he uses X on Gentoo.How can I go about learning how to do this? I can tell you now, I DO NOT know how to get the monitor information on the system. I DO NOT know where to find the configuration files for my monitor.
I know I am going to need drivers and stuff. What I asking I guess is where I should start in order to get this going. I am running Debian (lenny) 4 GIGS ram, 1.5TB HDD and a Dual core processor. I know the video card I have is a dual head video card for two monitors. I would like to thank everyone in advanced for their and hopefully I can learn something new and be able to do this on my own in the future.
Can i use system-config-lvm to resize lv_root from 50GB to 20GB and then resize lv_home to use the new 30GB of space without any hiccups? Meaning I can do this without losing data etc?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a home server running Debian Wheezy ( 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.68-1+deb7u6 x86_64 GNU/Linux). I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B NIC and an Intel 82574L. I saw while searching Google that both cards have this issue. I'm currently using the Realtek card for LAN connectivity. If I try to tranfer large files via SAMBA or have any kind of load on the NIC, my system freezes and requires a reboot in order to restore connectivity. The error message from kern.log is:

Everything runs fine until I try to do a large file tranfer or have multiple users connected.
lspci returns:

Also, I've rolled the driver back to rtl_nic/rtl8168f-1.fw and currently have that installed, but the error still occurs.
I am running Wheezy 7.9 and recently created a file, in xorg.conf.d, to set the monitor configuration because the EDID is not always read from the monitor. Everything works great but when the EDID is not read the monitor name, as shown in System Settings>Displays, shows as Unknown. I have the vendor info and modelname in the config file but they do not show in the Display GUI. Is there some variable that I can set in order to get a good monitor name displayed?

I am new to linux and have installed fedora 12 on my system. The partition sizing which I had done is :
- 17 gb
home- 8 gb
mp -1gb
usr -2gb
Boot -200mb
swap - 4gb (I have 2 gb RAM)
all partitions of ext4 format.
I would like to know that whenever I am going to install any new software or packages then it will be installed in which folder or partition? I have only 170 mb space free in user and have not installed any thing yet. Do I need to resize it. If yes, then how can I do so?
I had installed CentOs 5.3 on a Virtual Box machine (v. 3.0.10) and then I needed more free space to upgrade to CentOS 5.4 on partition /. I wanted to substract some space from /home partition in order to add some more free space to /. Thus I used a gparted live cd (v. 0.4.8-1) that it is a debian live cd. I resized the partition as I wished and every operations went successfully, but when I tried to reboot the only message that I see its 'GRUB' and nothing else happen. If I start again with the gparted live cd, everything seens to be fine as the partitions are there but I can't boot the system.
