OpenSUSE Hardware :: Future For Small Devices Since (S)Meego (l) For Netbooks Is Dead?

Feb 11, 2011

Is there any reasonable alternative to Smeegol/MeeGo for small laptops (exception made for Ubuntu)? I had a look to Android on Netbook but it doesn't really seem a serious option - to me (but may be i didn't catch its sense (?) ).Small footnote: I, for one, as a person which has to deal a lot with text, i need a device with a keyboard and as elegant and smart many tablets are i do not believe in a "Newton" + attached keyboard So, for mobile, Netbook or small laptop (subnotebook) are a must. And i'd like a - linux based - surface which optimzes the screen space and ressources.

OpenSUSE :: Getting Login Error When I Select Meego As Session Type / Sort It?

Jul 30, 2010

I installed goblin by run GoblinUI.ymp and logged out.
After I logged out, I chose meego as session type and tried to login again.
I entered correct password, but when I press enter after type password , display change to black and got some message and backed to login session again.

On the other hand, I succeed in running MeeGo Live CD(1.0.1 build 1.4).
I wrote MeeGo Live CD image on USB Flash Driver by using Win32 Disk Imager, and boot that one successfully, although it has some flaw.

Network Settings Window is stuck in workspace and can't move or close, so it cover other appication's window. Internet on toolbar is broken, so I have to run FireFox in application toolbar to use internet.

I'm using Netbook based on Atom CPU and GMA.OpenSUSE installed in my netbook is installed by KDE Live CD image.

Should I Use Gnome to use Goblin, because MeeGo is using Gnome? Or.... what is problem make Goblin doesn't work?

OpenSUSE Install :: Kde Dead - How To Restore It Without Reinstall 11.1

May 4, 2010

After have the gui completly f***d up with an upgrade that messed up kde, I'm about to restore the original kde from the installation dvd (11.1) but there is no particular options to only restore kde, so I have concerns concerning some of those applications compiled and installed after the original installation (two years backward). I also updated the kernel to make things work with vmware...I don't want to loose time to recompile all the different stuff I need to work with linux.

Is there a way to be sure (by renaming /usr /bin /sbin for example) to keep the kernel alive (with libraries and headers) and all applications that were working very good before I did this update for kde (I won't do this again trust me)?The kde group never told me how restore kde from the original dvd so I'm a little disappointed because the system is working ok in run level 3.only kde is dead.I'll dig deeper before doing the reinstallation of suse 11.1...

Fedora :: Smooth Fullscreen Playback In BBC IPlayer On Netbooks

Oct 3, 2009

Netbooks play embedded flash well but struggle with fullscreen flash playback on sites like BBC iPlayer. Fortunately, in Fedora it is pretty easy to change video mode to match the required resolution and get smooth playback.I tested this on an Acer Aspire One, but should work on most netbooks, even the original eeepc 701 can playback smoothly with a small mod to overclock the celeron to it's 900mhz potential (use eee.ko, it compiles in the latest kernels if you do sed 's/&proc_root/NULL/g' -i eee.c and sed '/owner/d' -i eee.c before running make)

General :: Which Linux Distribution Is Best Out Of The Box For Battery Life On Netbooks?

Nov 14, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for the past four years, but I recently bought a Dell Mini 1012, and while Ubuntu 10.04 is wonderful in every way, it is giving me quite poor results in terms of battery life, compared to Windows 7 which is also installed on the device. I have been able to get 4.5 hours out of Ubuntu, compared to the 8 hours I have been able to get with Windows 7 Starter. I have tried everything suggested here in order to get better battery life out of Ubuntu, but without success.I'm wondering if I might have better success with another distribution. Are there any Linux distributions available that can claim longer battery life than others, on netbooks and in general? This question can be answered objectively if it is backed up with hard data from based on benchmarks,

OpenSUSE :: Tomcat6 Status Results Into Dead State?

Feb 16, 2011

When i start tomcat6 (on a SLES 11 box) two times without a stop in between, rctomcat6 status results into dead state.

I checked the rctomcat6 start script, in this case when the tomcat6 is already running and a rctomcat6 start is done, it display a msg that "process already running", but it continues in the start function further down & executes the TOMCAT_SCRIPT(dtomcat6) script with the start argument. And after that pid in the tomcat6.pid file gets changed but the process keeps running with the old pid, and hence when we do a rctomcat6 status, it results into dead state(bcoz it doesn't find any process running with that pid).

I think it shouldn't execute the TOMCAT_SCRIPT in this case, so in case when checkpid is success(in start function), i put an exit after the echo msg " process already running", this solves the problem, but is this the correct solution ?

function start() {
echo -n "Starting Tomcat ($CATALINA_BASE)"
if [ -f "/var/lock/subsys/${NAME}" ] ; then
if [ -f "/var/run/${NAME}.pid" ]; then

[Code]...,

OpenSUSE Install :: System Crippled (no Input) Totally Dead

Mar 20, 2010

OpenSUSE 11.2 x86_64
Kernel 2.6.33-34.1(from Kernel:HEAD repo)
KDE 4.4.1

Did the daily set of updates today, which included the kernel, but that update only had to do with enabling IPV6 on all flavors of the kernel. The update also included updates to the xorg packages from the X11:XOrg repo. However I was prompted that a requirement couldn't be met and one of the options was to downgrade xorg-x11-driver-input to the previous revision (not previous version). I thought that wouldn't matter so I did it.

I reboot and I am able to choose the kernel I want in the grub boot screen, get to the KDM login screen, however, after that the input is totally dead! Mouse and keyboard don't work whatsoever. I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave mouse (LX8) & keyboard so I tried it with a standard PS/2 wired mouse & keyboard but it produced the same exact problem.
