Aug 4, 2011My Son just handed me his Verbatim 1TB external USB HD Doesn't show in fdisk or Gparted and obviously no access in file manager.No seen by windows either, except the USB part.

Nov 19, 2009Since the upgrade I have not been able to get keyTouch to work. I have the KDE 4.3 desktop. I have xbindkeys and GTK2 installed. I have installed the KMix plugin. I can start keyTouch in system services, but it stops immediately. If I try to refresh I get /etc/init.d/keytouch-init status returned 1 (program is dead and /var/run pid file exists): I have no idea what that means.

Feb 11, 2010I am running openSUSE on Acer Aspire-One, 1.6/500MB/8GB and it runs perfectly fine on AC power but whenever I switch to Battery power (on 100% charged state) after sometime (3-5 minutes) the Display goes Black Dead while power light is still green and cpu fan still running and then i have to forcefully shut it down by press and holding power button and restart it.
This is really strange problem and i have fresh installed the openSUSE two times but same problem.
OpenSUSE Install :: Kde Dead - How To Restore It Without Reinstall 11.1
May 4, 2010After have the gui completly f***d up with an upgrade that messed up kde, I'm about to restore the original kde from the installation dvd (11.1) but there is no particular options to only restore kde, so I have concerns concerning some of those applications compiled and installed after the original installation (two years backward). I also updated the kernel to make things work with vmware...I don't want to loose time to recompile all the different stuff I need to work with linux.
Is there a way to be sure (by renaming /usr /bin /sbin for example) to keep the kernel alive (with libraries and headers) and all applications that were working very good before I did this update for kde (I won't do this again trust me)?The kde group never told me how restore kde from the original dvd so I'm a little disappointed because the system is working ok in run level 3.only kde is dead.I'll dig deeper before doing the reinstallation of suse 11.1...
OpenSUSE :: Tomcat6 Status Results Into Dead State?
Feb 16, 2011When i start tomcat6 (on a SLES 11 box) two times without a stop in between, rctomcat6 status results into dead state.
I checked the rctomcat6 start script, in this case when the tomcat6 is already running and a rctomcat6 start is done, it display a msg that "process already running", but it continues in the start function further down & executes the TOMCAT_SCRIPT(dtomcat6) script with the start argument. And after that pid in the tomcat6.pid file gets changed but the process keeps running with the old pid, and hence when we do a rctomcat6 status, it results into dead state(bcoz it doesn't find any process running with that pid).
I think it shouldn't execute the TOMCAT_SCRIPT in this case, so in case when checkpid is success(in start function), i put an exit after the echo msg " process already running", this solves the problem, but is this the correct solution ?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Crippled (no Input) Totally Dead

Did the daily set of updates today, which included the kernel, but that update only had to do with enabling IPV6 on all flavors of the kernel. The update also included updates to the xorg packages from the X11:XOrg repo. However I was prompted that a requirement couldn't be met and one of the options was to downgrade xorg-x11-driver-input to the previous revision (not previous version). I thought that wouldn't matter so I did it.
I reboot and I am able to choose the kernel I want in the grub boot screen, get to the KDM login screen, however, after that the input is totally dead! Mouse and keyboard don't work whatsoever. I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave mouse (LX8) & keyboard so I tried it with a standard PS/2 wired mouse & keyboard but it produced the same exact problem.

Mar 22, 2011Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.

Apr 12, 2010I'm running 11.2 and using a 1TB Maxtor OneTouch4Plus, P/N 9NT3A8-500,for all my mass storage. After about 10 to 30 minutes it powers off and won't turn back on until I either unplug/replug or reboot. Also if it is off and I wake up the PC from the screen saver the light will come on and flash a few times, but it will turn right back off. Here is a c/p of listing the USB when it is on and off:

I've tried to plug it into the last open USB port on the back of the machine, but it just lights up and does not do anything or show up in the lsusb response.
It gets real anoying when trying to do FTP or large downloads because it will even shut down when being used not just sitting idle. A few weeks back when I was getting a ham program setup and working with the serial port I was able to see a recent error log and saw all the failed attempts to access/see it. I figure it was all the times I logged back in after the screen saver was on. I don't know how to bring that up for you guys to look at unless I jack up the FlDigi program I was working on and a search can't refresh my memory on how to do it.

Jul 31, 2010I have a laptop that came with no OS. It has no internal HDD, so I formatted a 320gb external HDD and installed openSUSE 11.3 from another computer onto the external hdd. I can't seem to boot from the external hdd on the laptop though. I have it set as the primary boot source in BIOS. Is it possible to boot from external hdd or am I missing a step?

Jan 16, 2011I have gone through Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, and continue using them on different PCs but I recently had a problem with my graphics card on new releases.. another story all together.So I am using OpenSUSE 11.3 on my Dell inspiron 1526 AMD 64 bit. I have always been able to plug in my external HD and have it show on my desktop. Now with OpenSUSE something is different. I tried other flash drives, all show up and open to view on their own, but my 1GB ext HD doesn't. I am not a pro with the Terminal yet but I prefer to use it and am good at reading and copying commands from online.

Nov 20, 2009This sounds strange, but my laptop (running 11.2) won't boot correctly unless my external HDD (ext3) is on and plugged in. If I don't turn it on, it hangs at the start of udev. If I press ctrl+c, the system continues to boot, but the keyboard and mouse don't activate... don't function, etc. But I can press my power button and it does shut down. Going through dmesg (during a successful boot with the external HDD on), I saw this (not sure if it is relevant):

OpenSUSE Install :: External HD Won't Mount Itself During Boot?
Dec 3, 2009A while back when 11.0 was recent i upgraded my computer to an hp pavilion desktop which only had SATA which wasn't compatible with my 500gb IDE hard disk. I then decided to buy a compatible hd (500 gb as well) and use an external hard drive case to put my old one into(which plugs into the USB ports) i currently have the external 500 gb partitioned with a linux native mounted at /home, and my other with NTFS and linux native mounted at /
Prior to updating to 11.2:I could power on my external hd(Thermaltake A2396) after grub and it would boot up no problem. if i turned it on too late or before grub was done it wouldn't load and i would have to log in as root in repair mode, turn the hd off then back on, wait for a couple of lines to pass(I assume the drive being detected) then mount /home, and init 5This didnt really bother me for the previous versions of suse much because i just had to remember to turn on the drive After updating to 11.2:the only way to boot is to wait, do the power on/off, mount /home, and init 5this gets to be quite annoying after a while and i was wondering if anyone knew a way to get it to mount itself while its booting. let me know if you'd like me to post any more info

May 9, 2010Since a few days i can no longer use my external hard drive (USB). During my quest i noticed the following things: Running openSUSE 11.2 / KDE 4.4.3 / single boot My internal HD is on /dev/sda2 (mounted /) partition manager (YaST) or gparted don't start up (they just hang during start-up) I had to change permissions suddenly to read a CD (i was not in de cdrom group, but i have been using CDs for a while)

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Error 17 On External HDD
Apr 9, 2011I recently decided to try out openSUSE 11.4 with gnome and install it on my external USB HDD. To do so i followed this guide here SDB:Installation on external hard drive - openSUSE
Unfortunately after finishing the install when trying to boot into the system i got GRUB error 17. The only thing i did differently from the guide was placing the /boot partition after a ~800 GB NTFS partition with my data.
I tried to solve the problem by reinstalling the system with different settings than before. After completing all of the steps in the guide mentioned i disabled booting from MBR and enabled booting from /boot partition. Also set the installer to write generic boot code to MBR.
Though after the installation i realized that grub is not loading at all this time and went on to fix it by completing the steps here SDB:All about GRUB - openSUSE . After doing so i'm back to GRUB error 17.

Apr 14, 2010I'm running openSUSE 11.1 32-bit and I'm trying to use my external USB DVD-RW drive. I've tried loading two 11.1 discs in the drive and both of them fail.After putting the dvd in the drive I mount with::mount/dev /scd0 /media/cdrom
and it comes back with:mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.Second question is can I use this external USB DVD-RW drive to install linux from, or does it have to be an internal drive? If so is there anything special I need to do to get it to look at the drive during boot. I take it this is dependant on a BIOS setting. This is all assuming of course I can get my dvd's to read.
