I know how to manage them from a commandline but I was wondering if there are any graphical partition editors that understand and work with lvm2?

First question. I accidentally closed the transparent desktop window and I want to get it back. How do i get it back or how do I create a new one, because it was very useful! what is that actually called so I know?
Second question. I have installed Suse on Vmware Fusion 3, I want to remove the Vmware tools installed within Suse and install the Vmware tools that came with Fusion 3, I also want to enable the graphical effects on the desktop, is there anyway I can do this?

I have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?
Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?
PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]

My desktop machine has U 10.10, Gnome, Compiz, Cairo dock. After a lengthy session with lots of programs and windows open, hitting the shutdown or restart or logout buttons don't produce anything at all. Suspend works. Sudo shutdown -h now in a terminal window works. Why the graphical ways of shutting down don't work?

I have a problem with the desktop effects on KDE. Nearly every time I start Kubuntu, the desktop effects only engage if I press Alt+Shift+F12. It then takes about half a minute to turn the effects on. The effects worked perfectly on 10.04.

This morning I created a panel on the left side of my screen and I set it to auto hide. The problem is, now that it auto hides I can no longer get it to reappear again. Because I can't, my special effects do not work (cube). Is there a way to delete this panel if I can't get it to reappear again?

I am unable to run compiz or set any advanced desktop effects in my Ubuntu 9.10 running under VMware Workstation 7.1. This is the output of the compiz command:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: xterm
no xterm found, exiting
What does all that mean exactly?

This also disables the network manager, which is a real pain. Also for some reason I can't enable special effects. I have the ATI Radeon 200M series integrated graphics chipset.eres some spec details:

I've just installed Kubuntu 10.04 (Specifically Linux Mint 9 KDE, but this is definately an upstream problem)
I installed the closed-source driver for my Ati Radeon 4x series using the Hardware Drivers tool. However, when I now reboot, compositing (desktop effects) are disabled.
Going into the Desktop section of System Settings, I recieve an error message "Compositing is temporarily disabled" Clicking "Resume Compositing" pops up a KWin notification saying I need to press Alt+Shift+F12 to resume compositing.
If I do this keyboard shortcut, the Desktop settings dialogue tells me compositing is active, but really it isn't (no desktop effects, software is drawing the windows etc)
Uninstalling the driver and reverting to the open-source one is not an option for me, unless anyone knows how to make Runescape work in OpenGL.

Today I noticed that I cannot enable visual effects on my computer. When I try to enable them, the screen flickers, enables the effects for just a moment, then flickers back to the previous screen with a dialogue box that says "visual effects could not be enabled". This is very strange because I was able to enable them when I first installed Ubuntu (in fact, I ran the "extra" visual effects for a while until I decided that it slowed my computer down too much). I don't know if it is possible that this has something to do with the most recent updates?
I'm not sure exactly what graphics card I have, but it is an ATI Radeon of some sort.

been running Karmic for awhile now, and I had all my desktop effects and eye candy set up perfectly, and then i made the mistake of thinking I knew things about linux.my flash was running slow, and i was attempting various fixes i found online, including mussing in the xorg.conf. well i somehow managed to disable my laptop's ability to run any sort of eye candy, I know it's capable since i've done it before.i have the standard Intel integrated graphics card that a million other people have, yadda yadda. the main problem(i believe) is getting to where i can select "Normal" under Visual Effects, but when i try all I get is the lovely "Desktop effects could not be enabled" message. hoorah

Its been quite some time since if had to post on here but I have been using linux this whole time and still loving it. Heres my new problem I have an Acer Aspire one netbook I installed Ubuntu 9.10 off of a usb hdd. Everything worked right off the bat including the wireless but after being on it for about a half hour I get a crash notice. Im sure that its the install on the usb hdd but due to the netbooks not having cd drives I cant burn a new iso. What I'm needing to know is that if there is anyway to fix this without reinstalling. Or if there is a way of downloading ubuntu and installing it with out the need for a cd drive. If more information is needed just let me know I'll be more than happy to post any more information needed.

When I type in gconf-editor it just opens a blank configuration screen . It would be better if someone one can help me how to do it probably on the command line, also what is the equivalent of xorg.conf on F11.

I have tried just about every thing I can find to get this to work on my laptop but have had no luck. Now this is the weird thing I can boot a Live CD of openSUSE 11 Gnome and make the Desktop Effects work no problem, but installing ATI drivers and unstalling ATI drivers still will not let the Desktop Effects work. I have tried all that I know and here are the xorg confs from both.

I just got Slackware 13.37 up and running and all is well except for the KDE Desktop Effects. If I log in as root, they're enabled and work fine. However, when I log in as a user they are disabled and the option to enable them is greyed out.Other OpenGL programs run fine as a user, such as the glxgears test program and OpenGL screensavers.ATI card running this driver:It must be some kind of permission issue but I'm not really sure where to look.

In a nutshell, it outlines a rather daft snag when running Ubuntu (10.04 and on) with regards to strange and quite frankly ludicrous wireless behavior concerning RaLink cards in Asus netbooks. The M.O. of a netbook is portable netz, yet it seems ENTIRELY impossible with this hardware setup Any geniuses care to have a stab? All outputs are included in the original post.

Now I'd like to switch from ftp to sftp, and when I try this in gftp (using the host ftps://ftp.website.com) it just says this:FTPS Support unavailable since SSL support was not compiled in. Netbooks play embedded flash well but struggle with fullscreen flash playback on sites like BBC iPlayer. Fortunately, in Fedora it is pretty easy to change video mode to match the required resolution and get smooth playback.I tested this on an Acer Aspire One, but should work on most netbooks, even the original eeepc 701 can playback smoothly with a small mod to overclock the celeron to it's 900mhz potential (use eee.ko, it compiles in the latest kernels if you do sed 's/&proc_root/NULL/g' -i eee.c and sed '/owner/d' -i eee.c before running make)
