View 14 RepliesI've been using Ubuntu for the past four years, but I recently bought a Dell Mini 1012, and while Ubuntu 10.04 is wonderful in every way, it is giving me quite poor results in terms of battery life, compared to Windows 7 which is also installed on the device. I have been able to get 4.5 hours out of Ubuntu,compared to the 8 hours I have been able to get with Windows 7 Starter. I have tried everything suggested here in order to get better battery life out of Ubuntu, but without success.I'm wondering if I might have better success with another distribution.Are there any Linux distributions available that can claim longer battery life than others, on netbooks and in general? This question can be answered objectively if it is backed up with hard data from based on benchmarks,

View 7 Replies View RelatedIts been quite some time since if had to post on here but I have been using linux this whole time and still loving it. Heres my new problem I have an Acer Aspire one netbook I installed Ubuntu 9.10 off of a usb hdd. Everything worked right off the bat including the wireless but after being on it for about a half hour I get a crash notice. Im sure that its the install on the usb hdd but due to the netbooks not having cd drives I cant burn a new iso. What I'm needing to know is that if there is anyway to fix this without reinstalling. Or if there is a way of downloading ubuntu and installing it with out the need for a cd drive. If more information is needed just let me know I'll be more than happy to post any more information needed.

I didn't know this was possible, I thought you pretty much had to take whatever extensions whoever built the package decided to include. Is it possible with CentOS to install PHP with a custom selection of extensions?

View 3 Replies View Relatedjust wondering what others are using to find and find and download new music. I'm also curious to know of other alternatives to Nicotine+, which I've been using for a little while. I've recently found a nice little widget called Seesu, which is great so far. It lets you search up bands and listen to their songs, and you can download the .mp3 for free afterwards if you like it. Anyway, enough of my pseudo-advertising.
What do you all do to find new music? Are torrent clients like Vuze the way to go, or is software like Nicotine+ better suited for the job? Perhaps you prefer the way of sites like Bandcamp, or by downloading from various online music stores. In any event, it'd be interesting to see how you all go about building onto your playlists.
I downloaded the Linux iso and burned it to a CD, but before I boot from it, I want to know how/if I choose which partition Linux gets installed to. I have Linux Ubuntu 10.10 and Mac 10.5.8.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAs the topic says, why is GNOME the desktop environment of choice by major Linux vendors and distributions? RedHat, Canonical Ubuntu and Novell SLED all use GNOME as the default DE. Even Sun when they released JDS back in 2004 decided to use GNOME as the default DE despite the fact it is based on SUSE which used KDE as the default DE.

Fortunately, in Fedora it is pretty easy to change video mode to match the required resolution and get smooth playback.I tested this on an Acer Aspire One, but should work on most netbooks, even the original eeepc 701 can playback smoothly with a small mod to overclock the celeron to it's 900mhz potential (use eee.ko, it compiles in the latest kernels if you do sed 's/&proc_root/NULL/g' -i eee.c and sed '/owner/d' -i eee.c before running make)

Do graphical effects work on my netbook?
The script starts first a program I wrote earlier that collects specific data from 3 online csv files and write a summary csv file called /Tribalwars/request.csv . The seperator used is ;
the csv file looks like this but can be any number of rows (but not to many mostly 3 - 5)
Title1;tile2;...;title15;
B1;B2;...;B15
C1;C2;...;C15
D1;D2;...;D15
Now the next part of the script, and that is what I want to change, asks me to manually input some data I have to copy paste from the csv file just created. I mean if i choose to continue to do my calculations for city 2, I need to copy-paste C1 for the first variable 'cityname' , copy-paste c2 for the second variable 'xxx',copy-paste C3 for the third variable 'yyy',copy-paste C15 for the fourth variable 'points'
Then it starts new calculations etc, witch only these variables.
Now could it be possible to make a menu from the csv file with only the according cells on the screen and that I only have to choose a row from the menu?

Is there any reasonable alternative to Smeegol/MeeGo for small laptops (exception made for Ubuntu)? I had a look to Android on Netbook but it doesn't really seem a serious option - to me (but may be i didn't catch its sense (?) ).Small footnote: I, for one, as a person which has to deal a lot with text, i need a device with a keyboard and as elegant and smart many tablets are i do not believe in a "Newton" + attached keyboard So, for mobile, Netbook or small laptop (subnotebook) are a must. And i'd like a - linux based - surface which optimzes the screen space and ressources.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need a 64-bit Linux distribution to beta test TeraChem, a GPU-based quantum chemistry package. I have never personally used Linux, however, and I don't know anything about the available distributions. I was wondering if I could get some recommendations.
My system specifications:
CPU: Xeon W3520
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 275
Motherboard: GIGABYTE EX-58 UD5
Current OS: Windows 7 64-bit
I would not use Linux as my sole OS but would want to dual-partition (I think that is the term?). However, I think I would end up using the distribution for more than just running TeraChem. I may even become a convert!
What am I looking for in a distribution? Ease of use, efficiency, 64-bit. What do I know how to do? I can build computers, code in C++, comfortably use a command line.
I would like to make my own Linux distribution.Where do I find a Linux distribution that has just the OS, a browser and basic drivers for ethernet, video, etc.I can then build it up myself through the repo.
