Just installed on my netbook the latest version of ubuntu (10.04). Have seen a few issues with other users however they have seemed to be able to make fixes. My problems are:
- Screen half brightness no change (does anyone have a fix yet?)
- Wifi not working (tried updating kernels, says they're the latest)
- Multi touch not able to be enabled, (again have seen a fix but for some reason won't work)

I am using openSUSE 11.3 , 32bit.I do the appropriate setting in 'minicom' application.I have two devices 'a' giving message at debug port at 9600 baud while 'b' at 115200 baud..Both 'a' & 'b' work fine when connected to serial port of computer.'a' works well if I connect it to serial to USB adapter which is plugged into USB port of computer. In case of 'b' , the above method yields failure.Do I have to set anything for device /dev/ttyUSB0 ?

I just downloaded Fedora 10, burned the CD, installed the program, etc. Everything went just fine, but after rebooting the screen turns gibberish, totally unreadable. I now it's the video card, NVIDIA but how do I fix it? I installed Fedora 8 which worked just great, no issues. My machine is Intel Core 2 7300, Geforce 9600GT my other machine, is AMD-64 5000, Geforce 9500 GT, same problem happens when trying to install Centos 5.

I needed to load Linux on a Samsung Q1Ex for a project I'm contracting on, and could not for the life of me get anything to run. Turns out that the video card is a chrome relative, and for some reason, almost every distro out there (I usually use debian for this sort of project - ie, no money, but use SLES at my day job) failed to even get to textmode console. Trying several distros, I finally put it out there and used OpenSuse and voila!, vga was working. After that, I got X running, and many hours later had the mouse working. The key to this device is Windows. I ended up parsing through the registry looking for "touch" and found that the software in use on Windows is eGalaxTouch. A quick google brought up their site where I found several Linux drivers. I used the beta mode drivers to get the mouse working. Here is a more detailed breakdown.
Use OpenSuse 11.3 (I used the full blown disc - its is the only distro I could get to boot correctly as the others all used OpenChrome, while OpenSuse seems to use fbdev - note here that installing the unichrome drivers will actually break X and cause you to have to reboot to get away from the mess on the screen). Use eGalaxyTouch drivers. The pdf's included in the download have step-by-step instructions but the big pieces are the setup.sh script and the serio_raw steps (note if you perform a 'hwinfo --bios | more' you can figure out which /dev/input/event* you're using - for me it was event1 and serio4). Note also to choose PS/2 when executing the setup.sh script provided in their download. eGalax_eMPIA Technology Inc. TouchKit Linux Driver Here is my xorg.conf now:
Section "ServerLayout"
InputDevice "EETI" "SendCoreEvents"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]....
On the video, just stay with the fbdev and you should be good. So far, I've had KDE, Gnome, TWM all running; and now have my EFL apps running! Woohoo! Next piece of the puzzle is to verify sound, but on the face of it, looks like the system recognized it off the bat. And of course one other note. 11.3 is going to make me a convert!

I have an ATI Radeon 9600 video card on openSUSE 11.2 and I wish to enable 3D acceleration to get all the eye-candy working. As I understand it, fglrx will not work because ATI has relegated support of this video card to the legacy driver, which does not support the latest version of X. This leaves me to use the open source radeon driver. 3D acceleration works here, but when I move windows around I get lines on my screen suggesting something wrong with the refresh rate. Are there any modifications I can make to my xorg.conf file so that I can get acceptable performance with this video card, or am I relegated to using NVidia video cards?

I installed Opesuse 11.2 and I manged to install the Nvidia driver and it works fine. Then I enabled the Compiz and it works fine. During the Opensuse 11.2 installation I installed the XEN becuase I wanted to run multipile XEN guest, I have Nividi GeForce 9600 GT and I have 8 G of RAM and 1.5 TB.
When I decided to boot from XEN mode, it do not boot and it went to the terminal, I logged in I tried to install the Nivid driver in XEN mood and I wan in the init 3, it says:
The NVIDIA driver does not currently work on Xen kernels. If you are using a stock distribution kernel, please install a variant of this kernel without Xen support; if this is a
custom kernel, please install a standard Linux kernel. Then try installing the NVIDIA kernel module again.
I tried with the following Nvidia Driver;
After installing the above driver in normal kernel (non XEN kernel), it works fine but as soon as I boot to the XEN mode it just goes the terminal.

It must be some wrong with my installation or is there any patch for that.

I have an HTPC mini computer, in which I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx, and I tried all screen resolutions I could possibly use through the settings. And the top, bottom, left & right hand sides are out of the resolution. So for example the top and bottom taskbars are out of the screen. I'll be posting a photo later on today to show you people exactly what I mean. So that I can have Ubuntu's screen would fit all inside my LCD screen ? The HTPC runs an nVidia graphics card.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on a new HP PC (Pavilion p6240f PC).This came with an Intel GMX X4500 Integrated graphics. My monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 2333. Initially I got a very bad resolution, Later I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf (created the file) and added the following.
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 30 - 75
VertRefresh56 - 61
EndSection
[code]....
With both 1600 x 1200 and 1680 x 1080 I get the resolution but I see lots of shadowing.(The letters are not crisp) Do I need to upgrade any driver ?

Video card: nVidia G86 GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1) (lspci | grep VGA) Monitor: Samsung LN40C530, recently switch to from a generic Gateway 17" monitor that worked fine I've been using 9.10 x64 from a clean install since it came out and it's been working great. I recently upgraded my monitor from a generic 17" Gateway monitor to a Samsung 40" widescreen HDTV (LN40C530), and that's when the trouble began. At first, the screen would lock up and become inactive. I could move the mouse, but clicking did nothing and the clock wouldn't update. I also could not switch to a terminal via Alt+F1, I could only do a hard reboot.
Then, when it started booting up, I would get horizontal black and white lines (which I'm still getting). Usually, it boots to the white glowing Ubuntu logo as files load in the background (@ 640x480, 60hz). When it tries to bring up the login screen (autodetected 1920x1080, 60z), I get horizontal white lines across. (see pics) Happens booting off both Live CD and HDD. When I use safe graphics mode on live cd, it boots okay @ 1600x1200, 60hz. After installing under safe graphics mode, it gives me a message "no modes available, resolution unsupported".
Right now, I'm back at trying to install 9.10 x64 (Karmic Koala) with either 1920x1080 or 1360x768 @ 60hz. I'm using a DVI out to a DVI/VGA adapter, and a VGA cable between the adapter and the PC port on TV. I've tried default configurations, restricted drivers 173, 185, and nVidia's 195. When I'm able to get to a terminal, I've tried sudo X -configure, but testing w/ X -config yields the same broken result. When I Alt+k+PrntScr, it does refresh but brings up the same white lines. Sometimes it boots just fine and even autodetects as "Samsung 40", but not as of the last 30 or so boots. Let me know where I can start for proper troubleshooting; I'm not sure which log files are important for this issue. Do you think I might just need to create a customized X config with exactly what I need?

I've read about a half a dozen threads now on various problems such as mine but haven't found a solution which worked. I recently purchased a new LCD screen which has a native resolution of 2048x1152. After I plugged it in via DVI cable windows 7 picked up on the new display immediately and adjusted my resolution, but when I booted into Ubuntu I don't see either the circle thingy (initial splash screen), I don't see the Ubuntu with the slider deal flashing, and I don't ever get to the desktop. The hard drive is not active and all that happens is I see a flashing cursor then even that goes away after a second or so. I can get to Ubuntu's desktop if I boot to the recovery mode, login, then run "gdm", then it starts up just fine and defaults to the native resolution of my new monitor. How can I fix it so I don't have to do that?
Summary:
- Bought new LCD screen, SyncMaster 2343, resolution 2048x1152 via DVI
- Will not boot normally to Ubuntu 9.10
- See a cursor for 2 seconds, then goes away, no HD activity occurs
- Can boot to recovery mode, type GDM, everything is great
- Windows 7 picked up the new monitor right away, no problems
- Video card is ATI x850
- Running in a dual boot config, partitioned out to win7, winXP, and Linux Ubuntu 9.10

I inherited a water damaged Samsung NC10. A glass of water was spilled on the keyboard. I have dried the system out and it is now booting without issues. My only problem is that the keyboard has one key (P) that will not work at all. Every other key is fine. I removed the keyboard and reseated the connector ribbon but this has had no positive effect. I plugged a USB keyboard in and (P) works. Do you think that this means that the original keyboard is dead and should be replaced to have a fully functioning NC10? Or is it possible that water damage has made it so that no matter how many NC10 keyboards I plug in, it will have the same problem?

My printer, a Samsung ML-2251NP is not working correctly with Slackware 64 13.1. On Slackware64 13.0 it worked flawlessly, but now everytime I print it is just solid black on the whole page. I usually selected either the ML-2250 driver or the ML-2551N driver and it worked, but now I have this problem with both of them. I print a lot, so I need a working printer. It works fine in Windows 7. This is a network attached printer.

I'm trying to configure my display on Ubuntu, but I'm getting problems to define the screen resolution. The native resolution for FX2490HD is 1920x1080, but Ubuntu only recognizes 1360x768. Following a recipe[1] that uses xrandr I can setup 1920x1080, but the image looks strange. In this mode, I see shadows behind the blurred letters. This is the code that I typed to follow the recipe:

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) from Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on my Samsung R580 laptop [URL] So far all my hardware seems to be working except the laptop's integrated camera. In 10.04 the camera worked and I could use the program "Cheese" to take photos and videos with the camera. In 10.10 I installed Cheese and tried to use my laptop's camera but it didn't work. I installed all the available updates for 10.10 but still the camera wouldn't work. The only information about the camera on the laptop's webpage is that it is a 1.3 MP Web Camera.

I'm a newbie to installing LINUX (was an Oracle DBA for many years) and I am having trouble getting the dual head function to work with my Sony Vaio laptop. I just select a generic LCD with the screen resolution that I want, but when I startx, I briefly get the login window (terminal), then everything goes blank and I have to unplus the samsung monitor and reboot to be able to have a screen again. I have tried the fn + f keys and that doesn't help.
Here is the hardware:
Samsung Syncmaster 2343BWX
Sony Vaio VGN-FJ170
Intel Graphics Mobile 915GM/GMS/910 GML Express graphics controller
I would like to use this laptop as:
Audio streaming from internet (so far not working on my local NPR stations)
Hooked up to KVM switch - using the Samsun monitor and an adesso integrated keyboard
Wireless network (that is working - but it took some doing....)
What files and logs I need to post I will do so, but if what I want to do is just not possible or a big hassle, please just let me know, and I will load windows. Although I really wanted one LINUX box in my home office.

I recently upgraded to suse11.4 and everything worked fine for a few months. Suddenly after logging in (GUI - LXDE desktop) the background screen is all what I can see and no menus, not even right click opens anything. Same in KDE desktop. All I can do is throw myself out with Ctrl Alt and F1. startx returns that the server is already running. All I can do is using (as root) "rm -rf /tmp/X0-lock" and then "startx --:1". That opens the GUI but only as root. What can I do that I can log in normally again? By the way I tried to reinstall but I only get to loading drivers and then everything stops.

Upon crashing a massage told me that I should make sure the video drivers are up to date. I then went into system --> Administration --> Hardware drivers and it says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system." So my question is how do I install a driver for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 M10?

i had recently loaded squeeze and had an issue with the 2d performance.i.e when being prompted for the root password, the shading slowly draws down the screen several times before stopping at the final darker shade. i then added the linux-firmware-nonfree package. all worked extremely well, even compiz, but i don't really care about compiz. i just loaded it to see how it performed. i then distro-hopped a bit and when i came back to squeeze the first thing i did was add the package, but the video is acting like i haven't added the package. i've searched for an answer, but have not found anything recent to indicate if xorg was upgraded or what.stable lenny works fine, but i'd rather have the nice console fonts when not in x and more up to date apps like gimp and xsane in squeeze.
