I'm trying to configure my display on Ubuntu, but I'm getting problems to define the screen resolution. The native resolution for FX2490HD is 1920x1080, but Ubuntu only recognizes 1360x768. Following a recipe[1] that uses xrandr I can setup 1920x1080, but the image looks strange. In this mode, I see shadows behind the blurred letters. This is the code that I typed to follow the recipe:

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on a new HP PC (Pavilion p6240f PC).This came with an Intel GMX X4500 Integrated graphics.My monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 2333. Initially I got a very bad resolution, Later I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf (created the file) and added the following.

With both 1600 x 1200 and 1680 x 1080 I get the resolution but I see lots of shadowing.(The letters are not crisp) Do I need to upgrade any driver ?

i don't know what this os want from me one moment everything is fine the next it's not first of all it started asking me to choose resolution on startup it said undefined b31 and i have to press enter then 366 for 1024x1280 32 bit how can i fix this problem how can i define 366 resoultion as default and how can i update the screen card driver for 10.1 i have ati hd 3650 agp card. and by the way what are the cool things i can do with graphics here except the rottaing windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an HTPC mini computer, in which I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx, and I tried all screen resolutions I could possibly use through the settings. And the top, bottom, left & right hand sides are out of the resolution. So for example the top and bottom taskbars are out of the screen. I'll be posting a photo later on today to show you people exactly what I mean. So that I can have Ubuntu's screen would fit all inside my LCD screen ? The HTPC runs an nVidia graphics card.

I've installed the nvidia driver (from homepage) with version 195.36.24 The NVidia X Server Settings shows only a 1360*768 as max possible resolution. I am new to this forum. I am a both rhel5 and fedora user.I can not configure my Samsung syncmaster 632nw monitor to display full screen at 1360X768.There is huge blank space on left and right portion of the monitor.The maximun resolution is 1024*768 and minimum is 640*480.
I have tried many times to solve it using xorg.conf but still unable to do it.
Here is xorg.conf's content :
Video card: nVidia G86 GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1) (lspci | grep VGA) Monitor: Samsung LN40C530, recently switch to from a generic Gateway 17" monitor that worked fine I've been using 9.10 x64 from a clean install since it came out and it's been working great. I recently upgraded my monitor from a generic 17" Gateway monitor to a Samsung 40" widescreen HDTV (LN40C530), and that's when the trouble began. At first, the screen would lock up and become inactive. I could move the mouse, but clicking did nothing and the clock wouldn't update. I also could not switch to a terminal via Alt+F1, I could only do a hard reboot.
Then, when it started booting up, I would get horizontal black and white lines (which I'm still getting). Usually, it boots to the white glowing Ubuntu logo as files load in the background (@ 640x480, 60hz). When it tries to bring up the login screen (autodetected 1920x1080, 60z), I get horizontal white lines across. (see pics) Happens booting off both Live CD and HDD. When I use safe graphics mode on live cd, it boots okay @ 1600x1200, 60hz. After installing under safe graphics mode, it gives me a message "no modes available, resolution unsupported".
Right now, I'm back at trying to install 9.10 x64 (Karmic Koala) with either 1920x1080 or 1360x768 @ 60hz. I'm using a DVI out to a DVI/VGA adapter, and a VGA cable between the adapter and the PC port on TV. I've tried default configurations, restricted drivers 173, 185, and nVidia's 195. When I'm able to get to a terminal, I've tried sudo X -configure, but testing w/ X -config yields the same broken result. When I Alt+k+PrntScr, it does refresh but brings up the same white lines. Sometimes it boots just fine and even autodetects as "Samsung 40", but not as of the last 30 or so boots. Let me know where I can start for proper troubleshooting; I'm not sure which log files are important for this issue. Do you think I might just need to create a customized X config with exactly what I need?

I have a new system with an ati mobility radeon hd 5730 chip. As far as I know, there are new drivers in the works, but aside from some articles, I haven't found anything that specifically tells me how to get them installed/working (at least, so that it works for the 5000 series of radeon chips).Has anyone had any luck with this yet? I'm just at the stage of installing, so I don't really care if it involves a different distro, etc. I've tried Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04-alpha2, as well as Fedora 12 (from the live CD) and so far no luck.At the moment, all I care about is getting the native 1600x800 working for my screen. I haven't a clue how do do that...it seems like I might be able to do this using xrandr, but I don't know how to create a mode properly.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 version. I've recently purchased a BenQ E2200HD monitor. However, the monitor is unable to configure a resolution higher than 800x600. I've tried changing it via 'preferences' - 'monitor' etc. The monitor model is 'unknown'. and the highest resolution available is the 800x600.
I've tried changing it manually, but it says x.cong file does not exist. Xrandr doesnt seem to work either. Or i would get CTRC 262. My current set up is, intel i5 2600, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GTS 240. I'm pretty certain, my graphics card (despite being in the low end) can support HD resolution. Even if it can't, it surely can support a resolution higher than 800x600.
I am running kde 4.4 in virtualbox , but cannot create xorg.conf to get a correct resolution. X -configure = segfault. Older releases were fine - lenny, even ubuntu hardy / lucid.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems adjusting my screen resolution. I'm using Nvidia Geforce FX5300 video card and Samsung T220P LCD screen with resolution of 1920x1200. After installing the Nvidia driver I went to system -> preferences -> display in order to change the resolution to 1920x1200. Unfortunately, the available resolutions were only 640x480 and 320x240. I tried to set the resolution manually, using the advanced button, but when I did this everything was extremely big on my screen.

Assuming this is the problem, does this mean I have to upgrade to Testing or install proprietary drivers?
I recently got a Samsung ML-1660 printer and while it worked fine with the unified linux driver provided by Samsung, I didn't really like how that driver did its business with regards to installing old static libraries and other stuff that I don't need and most certainly don't want going stale and causing problems down the track.
1) Download the Samsung unified printer driver from their website (UnifiedLinuxDriver_*.tar.gz)
2) Extract /cdroot/Linux/noarch/at_opt/share/ppd/ML-1660spl.ppd to a temporary directory.
3) For 32 bit: extract /cdroot/Linux/i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsung* to a tmp dir
4) For 64 bit: extract /cdroot/Linux/x86_64/at_root/usr/lib64/cups/filter/rastertosamsung* to a tmp dir

I have my Xubuntu box connected to a 1920x1200 LCD monitor via a KVM switch. If the KVM is set to the Xubuntu box when I boot, all's well, but if the KVM is set to the other machine, Xubuntu boots into a 800x600 resolution. This behavior started with Maverick, when I was running Lucid. the correct resolution was set no matter the position of the KVM switch. Is there some place in Maverick that I need to set the resolution to 1920x1200 so it is set correctly regardless of the KVM?

But on ubuntu (even after installing proprietary drivers) the highest I can get is 1024x768 .

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy screen resolution keeps reverting back to the default resolution 800x600. I'm using ubuntu 10.04, but had the same problem on 9.10 on my Acer Revo r3600 ION. I am able to change the resolution to 1280x1024 but have to do it by the nVidia configuration tool. The tool then allows me to 'Save to X Configuration'which it appears to have done successfully.See the sections from my 'etcx11xorg.conf' file. This is the state of the file after a reboot by the way.how I can get my desired resolution to persist after I reboot?

I installed 10.04 on my former windows box last night, and I seem to be stuck at a screen resolution of 1024x768. I have a Geforce 7600 GT graphics card, and I installed current drivers via the hardware drivers option. I can't go above this resolution in the nvidia x-server settings, and even xrandr says the highest resolution I can use is 1024x768. What is up with that, and how can I change it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to change the output resolution of a HTPC that's connected to a 720p plasma from (an auto set) 1024x768 to 1280x720 so that the output is the correct 16:9 ratio for the plasma.The HTPC is running Ubuntu 11.04 with a GeForce 7600GT and is connected via VGA cable to the plasma. The plasma automatically detects the PC input as XGA.
The worst effect of this is 16:9 media (video clips etc) looks really stretched out with the letterbox bars on the top and bottom and icons in general don't look square.Nvidia driver has been activated via Additional Drivers but the message reads;

After upgrading to 11.04, my screen resolution was reset to 1024x768. As the native resolution for my monitor is 1920x1080, I went to reset that. The resolution didn't exist in the Monitors applications, so I did the following:

The monitor adjust, but most of the screen shows tearing and doesn't update correctly. Hard to explain, so I attached a screenshot at 1024x768, working normally, and 1920x1080, fubar. I've cropped these images to get them to fit the forum limitations, but they still show the issue.
My monitor is an LG Flatron W2253TQ, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4650, although the manufacturer is Biostar. I'm using the default free drivers.
I just changed the desktop on my thinkpad from awesome to i3. And now I have some very strange issues with the screen resolution. Because at home I use this x60 thinkpad on a dockingstation and a 19" display. As long as I used Awesome as my Desktop, the display manager as well as the desktop itself could handle the different screen resolution depending on if I'm out with just my 12" on my thinkpad or with the much bigger screen on my home 19" display.
I can understand that i3 maybe cannot handle this alone and I need xrandx to enforce the screen resolution. But why is the display manager (lightdm) also affected by this change? What is so different that even the DM cannot find the proper screen resolution?

When I try to change the screen resolution via the gnome menu I just can choose the 640x480 resolution and 50Hz refresh rate.
I've googled the issue and had a little luck, though I can't seem to change my xorg.conf file because permissions are defailed. This is the example xorg.conf file I wrote based upon my original and the modifications:

Just got an HP dv6-2150 laptop. Dual boot with Windows 7 and 9.04 (9.10 will not work but that's a different story). The screen resolution is too low and is set at the highest option available (1024x768 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio). The HP uses the new Intel i3-330m chipset with on-board Intel HD graphics. The system is capable of 1366x768 resolution (16:9) - so how do I get it there? xorg.conf looks real generic - nothing specific to Intel.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSince I upgraded to 9.04 a while back I have had this annoying screen resolution issue. Every time I log into my Ubuntu system the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. My preferred desktop resolution is normally set at 1680x1050. So each time I log in I have to open the Nvidia control panel and manually set the screen resolution to 1680x1050. Even after logging out it will still go right back to 1280x1024 when I log back in.
But the funny this is I am almost positive the login screen resolution is 1680x1050 because the picture is crisp unlike the blurry and distorted picture at 1028x1024. I have tried everything from manually editing the x.org conf file to running the Nvidia control panel as root. Nothing saves my preferred resolution of 1680x1050. My Nvidia driver is version 190.42 and Ubuntu version is 9.04. The monitor is an ASUS VW192T+ which is detected by the Nvidia driver.
