OpenSUSE Hardware :: Driver Install - Make - Cannot Stat R8101.ko

Nov 30, 2008

I just installed openSUSE 11. The 64-bit laptop has a RealTek RTL8102E NIC, which SUSE misidentified during the install. I found the supposedly correct Linux driver on Realtek's website, but I'm getting a problem when trying to compile the driver and I can't find my problem or the solution in any current threads - so I must be doing something pretty stupid. I followed the directions.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Build / Make Custom Driver Into Kernel?

Mar 29, 2009

I'm new to linux and recently installed openSUSE 11.1 on my Lenovo Thinkpad SL500. So far it's great... only problem is the hotkeys and brightness control don't work. Digging around online I found this "experimental" driver that purportedly works fine, but I have no idea how to compile, install, or otherwise use it. Here... tetromino's lenovo-sl-laptop at master - GitHub I'm not sure what to do with the makefile and C file provided. For example, what do I do with this instruction...

"To enable the brightness control, load the module with the "control_backlight=1" module parameter (i.e. insmod lenovo-sl-laptop.ko control_backlight=1 )" I know someone on here will be able to explain how to do this in a "computer engineering for chemists" language! I'm comfortable enough working in the terminal with commands, but have found no real straightforward explanation of how to do so (only "programming" experience is MATLAB m file writing).

Fedora Hardware :: Make And Install The Driver For The Hauppauge 1600?

I am having an extremely hard time trying to make and install the driver for the Hauppauge 1600. I have Fedora 14-2.6.35.91 kernel. I am a newbie at this kind of installation. I would like to know is there a kernel that I can install that the tv tuner will work right out of the box. This is very frustrating. I try to install the CX18 driver, I receive an error message. I would really like this to work.

Reason I'm bothering at all is that yes, the Realtek card worked 'out of the box' but is pretty unreliable, a third and less the speed of the other machines in the house

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Building MCS9865 Driver - Cannot Make Target Modules

Jul 14, 2010

I recently bought a pci multi io card to give my pc 2 parallel ports. For Linux, Moschip supply the source plus makefile and instructions. I ran make as root and got an error message
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/build/: No such file or directory. So I created a folder called build in /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop but that isn't good enough as I still get an error cannot make target modules. So I assume there must be something in the build folder. So what packages do I have to install to get the correct environment to be able to build the driver? Has anyone done this and can supply the driver for 11.2?

OpenSUSE Network :: Installing Driver Error - No Rule To Make Target `modules' - Stop

Apr 13, 2011

I am relatively new to linux and am running into a problem. I just got a new laptop and need to configure/install it's wireless driver but am getting an error when running "make". The error is: make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop/build' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.

I have scoured these forums and know that others have the same issue (when configuring other drivers/programs). I am sorry if this post is redundant. It sounds like the Makefile is pointing to the wrong directory. I am using opensuse 11.4, have make and gcc installed. My kernel is linux-2.6.37.1-1.2 (I just re-installed the desktop kernel to make sure it was up to date). The driver I am trying to install is located here: AUR (en) - rtl8192ce.

Another forum suggests pointing somewhere in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.1-1.2 directory instead. Is this correct? Should I be pointing to a folder within this? I am not a programmer but any description about what I am actually putting in this directory and why would be awesome (so I can learn a bit more). Or just helping me solve the problem would be great too.

OpenSUSE Install :: Stable - Install Nvidia - Driver 260.xx.xx In Opensuse 11.3?

Jan 19, 2011

i know if u search a solution in forums u get so much confused information. i hope this little manual will help all with the nvidia driver problem! u dont need to edit or create a xorg.conf or something to run the driver correct and u need no blacklistedit too! if u did the standard opensuse 11.3 install its only about 2 kernel packages and the disabling of the x11noveau driver.

1. after standard installing opensuse 11.3 update and install the opensuse softwareupdates

2. install with the yast software re/installer:

(from Desktop or from the terminal. the terminal text command is: yast2)

[Code]...

u dont need to change the menu.lst after all, only u get many problems. run the midnight commander and delete the nomodeset word and the noveau driver would be normally still active after reboot.

OpenSUSE Install :: Easy Install Of ATI Proprietary Driver In Console

Mar 12, 2011

For those who need or want to install the latest ATI proprietary driver (Catalyst 11.2) right after a fresh 11.4 install - and might not look for solutions in the development subforum. In order to compile the module, I installed the kernel sources and the pattern devel_basis. I normally use most packages in this pattern, so I install it by default from other scripts. While running atiupgrade on a fresh install, I was surprised by the number of packages getting installed with that pattern. Please report if it doesn't work. (like aticonfig initial failed to add a fglrx section for some reason).Take a look at the atiupgrade thread in the development forum: Upgrading ATI driver with atiupgrade.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - Cannot Install Nvidia Driver ?

Aug 3, 2011

Nvidia h/w:Quadro FX 570

Installed 11.4 yesterday. No problems. Installed Gnome 3 today and it goes into fallback mode. Assuming that the graphics driver might be the culprit, I attempted to install the latest nvidia driver.

Added repo ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/ in Yast2.

Did a refresh and it complains that it cannot access installation media at the above. Paste the above in Firefox and it gets there OK.

One-click method also fails.

Never had a problem with updating nvidia driver before. Not sure what to check. I did delete and add with no success.

BTW, the other defined repos in Yast2 work fine.

OpenSUSE Install :: ATI Driver + 11.4 - Can't Boot To KDE?

Mar 15, 2011

after installing 11.4 I can no longer boot into KDE using the ATI driver from their website. Same thing happened prior to 11.4 but I assumed it was an out of date driver so I updated SUSE + the driver, no difference. Boots straight to command line. I was getting errors about the Xorg.conf.old file unable to be overwritten when I tried 'Xorg -configure'. I did find a few solutions from other threads and simply deleting Xorg.conf allows me to boot into KDE using the default (whatever that is) graphics driver (fps is very low but it boots at least).

Any time I reinstalled the ATI driver/tried to use it it would die again. After a bit of searching around the log files for Xorg and X11 I found an error about "display not found" or something of that nature and then it was giving up and booting to cmd. had it working fine in the past prior to a software update (either driver or kernel or both, I don't remember) so I'm not entirely sure what broke it. I can give more specific error details once I get home in an hour or two but I'm just wondering if the latest ATI driver (11.2? I think it is) is compatible with openSUSE 11.4 and if anyone has a solution to this problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Make LVM - Partitions

May 24, 2010

Texts about partitioning with LVM are quite technical. However I should like to find a text explaining me how to manually make LVM-partitions in OpenSuSE. Like which ones, how big, how to do it. I made an auto LVM with /home. Problem is my entire disk is not used (/root was 5GB max /home was only 7GB max on sda2)and I was not able to make the partitions the seize I wanted.

I have now sda1 configured as /home 280GB and sda2 with the proposed partitioning of Yast. So only 5,9 GB for root. It looks like my try-out is working fine, however. Using normal partitioning is not a good option on my PC. He shows lots of black screens. With LVM no problem at all.

OpenSUSE Install :: Graphics Card Driver For GMA HD?

Jun 25, 2010

I have unfortunately found myself unable to properly boot up openSUSE because I decided to buy the Acer Aspire with the i5 Processor.

I have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card, and unfortunately from all my searching online and on openSUSE, I have been unable to find a driver for this that works for linux, and in addition I don't know how to install a driver outside of a GUI.

My openSUSE boots up to the boot choosing screen (regular openSUSE or failsafe), and then that nice list of functions being done is displayed, but as soon as the daemon has started, suddenly my screen goes blank and I am unable to do anything about it. Beyond this point, my OS loses all functionability, and while I can hear it computing, I am unable to actually tell WHAT it is computing. get a driver for this and to install this driver and get this GUI running, that would be great.
