I have HP 6735B. I am trying to install openSUSE but I can't boot from CD. On all other computers and laptops I can start the installation with same CD, and on this HP i can start all other installations (WINDOWS, UBUNTU.....)

I installed OSS11.4 clean install over 11.3, it is suppose to be dual boot together with with winxp.
When i select to boot xp machine starts to boot but it boots forever and eventually
nothing happens further (HHD does not spin). Can it be grub problem or it's
winxp boot problem? When the actuall job of grub stops?
Boot loader location:
Bot form MBR, Boot from root partrition, boot from extended partrition.
i was wondering if anyone knew how to make a Grub network boot cd. I would like to run openSUSE off of my server and not on my hard drive because i don't have a lot of space for the linux partitions.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed dansguardian & squid on 11.2 and things seem to run fine. Squid auto starts but dansguardian does not. I have checked Yast2's runlevel services option and dansguardian is enabled to 'Yes'. But when i check with 'service dansguardian status' it reports 'unused'.If i start dansguardian by hand, things work perfectly fine.I am in a desperate situation since there are 4 other computers which are dependent on this setup to work correctly

View 4 Replies View Relatedfinally got mostly everything fixed on my opensuse 11.3. 11.3 is my only os on my laptop right now and I want to be able to dual boot with backtrack4. I used to have bt3 but it was on a usb loading up with winxp. Anyway, I've downloaded the iso image and after hours of forum reading I figured out how to mount the iso image. Doing so allows me just to look at the files. Is there an install file somewhere I'm missing?
Also, couldn't ever figure out how to partition my drive to make room for bt4. Tried downloading gparted and failed. Tried using the expert partitioner program that came with this system but it won't allow me to create another partition. Couldn't ever find a reason why. Will bt4 allow me to create a partition upon installation? How do I install?
Above adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin.
(Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.
I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Like which ones, how big, how to do it. I made an auto LVM with /home. Problem is my entire disk is not used (/root was 5GB max /home was only 7GB max on sda2)and I was not able to make the partitions the seize I wanted.
I have now sda1 configured as /home 280GB and sda2 with the proposed partitioning of Yast. So only 5,9 GB for root. It looks like my try-out is working fine, however. Using normal partitioning is not a good option on my PC. He shows lots of black screens. With LVM no problem at all.
I want to install EVMS n machines with openSuse 11.2. The EVMS installation procedure (EVMS: Installation: Installing the EVMS Tools), point 3, says to do: "make install".
I'm in the correct folder, there is the file Makeinstall.ini, but just try to run the command I've an error (make cannot have install like target).

I am trying to make Liveusb with persistence i downloaded live gnome version which is in .iso format i also downloaded win32diskimager mentioned on this page Live USB stick - openSUSE but it only .img files i also tried unetbootin ,there is no option for 11.2 version my laptop doesn't have cd/dvd drive so to install on hardisk i have to do it by usb,so i thouht of going for live usb. are there any alternatives

Note: I just want to make a bootable USB, not to install 11.3 on USB. ( There are many reasons to do that, e.g., USB is much easier to carry, and also reuse later for new versions. ) But it seems there is no instruction to do that.

Edit: I can run shell file by invoking it with terminal. So there is no problem with the file
With the installation of 11.4 the grub will be installed in the MBR. When I first installed the Opensuse 11.4, restart my computer and get into the boot menu, I found that the OpenSUSE boot item was at the top while Windows Xp was at the bottom. It may cause problem when my parents are going to use the computer (they only know XP). How to set the Windows XP as the first item and the default choice?
View 2 Replies View Relatedattempting to reinstall 11.3, my system always freezes up at different points. Always during actual installation (not setup). Burned an 11.4 disc and the same happens. First was a DVD, but the new one is a CD, and now with the new version, a little dialogue comes up at the start to tell me 1 gig of RAM may not be enough. Well, it always was before. Is there a certain combination of settings which may make it run better? Also, a live session works fine.

I have drive partitioned as follows...
sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap
sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called)
sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.
I tried to install 11.3 on my acer aspire 7530 notebook to have dual boot with xp.
I made 4 partitions: one for xp, and the three for linux were made automatically.Before installation I got the warning that the partition wasn't entirely below 128 gb, I installed anyway to give it a try.
The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.
Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.
Out of curiosity and stupidity, I configured 2 extended partitions to LVM in gparted. Now, I can't boot into X window, and there's only GRUB command line during boot.

I found the supposedly correct Linux driver on Realtek's website, but I'm getting a problem when trying to compile the driver and I can't find my problem or the solution in any current threads - so I must be doing something pretty stupid.
