OpenSUSE :: GCC C++ Compiler Installation - Repositories In The Application Sticky Only Applied To Installations Through 11.3
Apr 18, 2011
I am looking to install a c++ compiler. I run 11.4, and was told to look in the Software Manager for easy installation. I have no repositories installed, as the repositories in the Application sticky only applied to Suse installations through 11.3. I found the package "gcc45-c++" (Version Number 4.5.1_20...208-9.8) when I searched the Software Manager. I proceeded to install it, and had no problems, but when I looked in "applications", the compiler was not there. I'm aware that I may be revealing some great ignorance here, so I'll ask, should gcc appear? If not, how do I execute the program?

Situation is that there are two users on a Linux server- say A and B.A has been operating a shell script that in turn makes use of and exe file.The script and exe both are owned by user A.My problem is that I want user B to make use of the script and exe in exactly the same way user A does.So I have set suid bit of the script, exe and all the library files that the exe uses.But the exe is still not executing from user B.I did a man of chmod on Linux server and it gave an indication that SUID is disabled on new Linux servers.Now the question is, is there any other command that can perform the same task as SUID did on Unix.

I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

My application is developed using GCC and an binary executable created out of it which initializes successfully. By initialization, I meant all the threads in the application are created and I get the required response from the executable. There was a need to create a .so file out of my application instead of binary executable, as it needs to be integrated with another .so file to create a final patch. So we used -fPIC compiler option and created a .so and also an binary executable. But with -fPIC included, the executable fails to initialize at all. It executes some instructions in the main program, before finally haulting down with a " Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault." error. And it always fails at the same faulty address which points to nothing in my application code. What is that -fPIC adds to the code, which makes my code fail with strange behaviour.

I installed openSUSE on my notebook with an usb drive using openSUSE 11.4 KDE LIVE iso. The installation process set the name to "linux-ygrl" which I don't really like. (I probably just missed the setting during the installation.). I tried to change it through YaST -> Network -> Hostnames and I set everything where needed to the new name and restarted but the changed weren't applied. I searched the web and found out about the /etc/HOSTNAME file which still contains "linux-ygrl". Now I could change it manually but I was wondering if there is a GUI for it? (I mean, openSUSE has for alsmost everything a GUI.

Does anyone else have a resource monitor appearing on their KDE desktop? My is in the upper-right corner, and lies on top of all other windows. I can work with windows beneath it alright, but it is always showing.
The resource monitor is always translucent, and appears to have some sort of vertical "thermometer"-style usage scale on its left side. Beside that are two scrolling graphs. The only text/label appears to be a percentage that matches the thermometer bar, but there is nothing to tell me what resources are being monitored. Regardless, I use other resource monitoring software and I do not want this one on my desktop.

I have chosen to use automatic login. But every now and then I am asked for username and password when the computer boots. When I do get automatically login the screen resolution is changed to 800 x 600 instead of 1280 x 1024. How do I get those two (resolution and log in) settings sticky?

TO the sticky: My wireless doesn't work - a primer on what I should do next Section 2 b) I guess it would be easier for the user if she/he would just use one command instead of /sbin/lspci and than /sbin/lspci -n and compare both outputs to find the right section that inhales the hexadecimal numeric IDs for the wireless LAN/wireless/WLAN/bluetooth/..What do you (all and especially the sticky's author, dear Larry Finger) think of alternatives like:

/sbin/lspci -nn

I have tried to install AWN for a month now, on 3 different 11.2 installations and kde and gnome, and would really like to know why I can't install it. I have tried:
- packman 1-click
- packman individual package installations
- rpm installation
and I keep getting these errors
- libawn1>=0.2.6 needed by avant-window-navigator-0.2.6-6.45.x86_64
- libpython2.5.so.1.0()(64bit) needed by libawn1-0.2.6-6.45.x86_64
and believe me I have tried to find these and have tried even similar looking things, no luck this is getting my opensuse experience down.

Power on - dell hardware boot options
Grub
Choice of
Standard suse boot
Safe mode

Choosing standard goes through a boot sequence but leaves me with a invalid screen setting with a scrambled display. Are there any options I can provide grub with that will enable me to boot and trouble shoot the system?
Grub has
vga = 0x348
The graphics are
NVidia geforce 6150se
Monitor
Dell 22 inch widescreen
SuSE 11.1 worked fine and the windows side works fine.

I recently installed 11.4 32bit on my computer at my summer home. I carry a DVD with all my /home data. Then today I noticed that all my repositories are labeled "11.3" repositories. Everything works. Here is the output from "zypper lr -d"...

What is the correct method of moving to the 11.4 repositories?

I have tried the tips, and to the best of my ability understand the later posts from the sticky post "Graphics Resolution" however I seem to keep reverting back to the blank screen. I did this:

5. Type "sudo reboot".
The above only works for some but not all, depending on what card you have and whether it actually is supported by additional drivers (proprietary). All at the moment, mostl seem to need "nomodeset radeon mode=X", where x= 0 or 1... Some ATI cards are not working with the current natty kernel, but are working with the older 2.6.37 kernel or the proposed 2.6,38.9 kerne (please see post 2)l Sometimes (rarely) it'll work but more often it won't, and in the two times it's worked I haven't known how to get it to remember the setting permanently- keep in mind I have no idea what that last paragraph about x= 0 or 1 means.

I've had enough of partitions. I have one for /home, 3 or 4 for various distros, and one for swap. It is rigid and difficult to adapt to varying disk usage. I'm currently finding it very difficult to upgrade all my machines to Natty. I want to avoid this problem in the future.This cleans up the root directory, and makes it easy to see what distros are installed.I want to be able to move existing installations into this system.

Now the problem is that I forgot if I excluded system files from backup or not, so when I restored and rebooted, my installations got messed up, many programs do not find their path to run, etc. But the real problem is when I rebooted again, I got error 15: file not found tried to follow some other posts here to solve this and noticed that running fdisk -l gives me:

So for those of you who has built GCC from source would know that you can't install GCC without an existing GCC. So my question is, what would happen if all computers in the world suddenly just died, and all you had was the computer in front of you, and a copy of GCC 4.5. How would you install that?
I ask because I would like to install GCC 4.5 on my old powerbook G4 mac without installing a binary GCC provided by Tiger 10.4 disks. I would like to build GCC from source, without an existing GCC to complicate updating.
