Just installed my first version of Ubuntu via the internet. All attempts to install applications (devise manager)/plugins (Banshee)have failed and I'm a little dispondent as I haven't much idea what's going on yet.

I am looking to install a c++ compiler. I run 11.4, and was told to look in the Software Manager for easy installation. I have no repositories installed, as the repositories in the Application sticky only applied to Suse installations through 11.3. I found the package "gcc45-c++" (Version Number 4.5.1_20...208-9.8) when I searched the Software Manager. I proceeded to install it, and had no problems, but when I looked in "applications", the compiler was not there. I'm aware that I may be revealing some great ignorance here, so I'll ask, should gcc appear? If not, how do I execute the program?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to troubleshoot an application that is generating several segfaults with an error 14, but the application is not crashing.The program continues to run. I would assume I can connect to a running process to debug it, but I'm not sure what to gather. The program has several background processes associated with it so I'm sure I'll need to attach to the actual internal process. Does anyone have any experience in this to offer some insight?

I just switched to debian from ubuntu in search of something different and I want to find a system that works for me before I settle down.

just two problems I have with debian:
No sound
Error message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I try to open sound from the speaker icon at top right.
I think it's a driver issue but Its not as easy as ubuntu was lspci:
My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.

Every time I boot up FC13 I get a boot message which is showing a failed task. The line is as follows:
Enabling the nvidia driver: /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 530: 1174 Segmentation fault "$@"[FAILED]
Everything appears to be running fine on my system. This message is more nuisance that a functionality message. But I could be wrong.
I am on Mint8. Discovered that the error message was caused by the program thinking that the true date was 10 days ahead of the date that shows on the display. And the incorrect date goes right along, changing every 24 hrs, the true date never catching up. Short term solution was to set the date 1 yr ahead which then showed on the display. Long term (?) solution fsck eventually worked. We shall see how long.

I am happy with Ubuntu and have become familiar with the OS and all the software I require. However, I have started to receive an error message which states, DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT Does this really mean that my hard disk needs to be replaced or could there be something else that needs "tweeking"? I just installed nagios to a Cent 5.4 box. Everything is working so far except I want to add a plugin I found on nagios exchange. The file has a .pl extension. I am unsure how to add the plugin to the rest of nagios. Do I need to add it to a nagios folder and then define it. If I just try to run the pl file I get a error mesg. I am unsure if the error is caused by system misconfig or because the plugin is not installed. The plugin is check_dayime.pl and the error I get is Can't locate Date/Parse.pm Perl seems to be working as I can run simple perl scripts and perl -v spits out v 5.8.8

Under any of Firefox or Seamonkey web browsers, if I type the URL about:plugins, a list of the installed (I assume they mean "installed in my machine") plugins appears. How do you do if you want to edit that list. Say, to disable a mime type or just delete it from the list?

Now im using CentOS n i updated the system but still i dont see many softwares on repositories unlike in ubuntu moreover i dont know how to install totem codecs and others. I can't even get terminal commands for getting codecs online.
