My openSuse 11.2 GNOME desktop is very quick and snappy.However, when I play Gnometris, the controls are very sticky and unresponsive!I have a high end nVidia card, and a dual core AMD 64 bit CPU, 2G Ram.
View 2 RepliesSituation is that there are two users on a Linux server- say A and B.A has been operating a shell script that in turn makes use of and exe file.The script and exe both are owned by user A.My problem is that I want user B to make use of the script and exe in exactly the same way user A does.So I have set suid bit of the script, exe and all the library files that the exe uses.But the exe is still not executing from user B.I did a man of chmod on Linux server and it gave an indication that SUID is disabled on new Linux servers.Now the question is, is there any other command that can perform the same task as SUID did on Unix.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone else have a resource monitor appearing on their KDE desktop? My is in the upper-right corner, and lies on top of all other windows. I can work with windows beneath it alright, but it is always showing.
The resource monitor is always translucent, and appears to have some sort of vertical "thermometer"-style usage scale on its left side. Beside that are two scrolling graphs. The only text/label appears to be a percentage that matches the thermometer bar, but there is nothing to tell me what resources are being monitored. Regardless, I use other resource monitoring software and I do not want this one on my desktop.
I have chosen to use automatic login. But every now and then I am asked for username and password when the computer boots. When I do get automatically login the screen resolution is changed to 800 x 600 instead of 1280 x 1024. How do I get those two (resolution and log in) settings sticky?

I am looking to install a c++ compiler. I run 11.4, and was told to look in the Software Manager for easy installation. I have no repositories installed, as the repositories in the Application sticky only applied to Suse installations through 11.3. I found the package "gcc45-c++" (Version Number 4.5.1_20...208-9.8) when I searched the Software Manager. I proceeded to install it, and had no problems, but when I looked in "applications", the compiler was not there. I'm aware that I may be revealing some great ignorance here, so I'll ask, should gcc appear? If not, how do I execute the program?

The I do CTRL+ALT+F<fn1-6> & finally CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot ........the reboot process takes a long time too.
After I reboot everything becomes normal again.
This doesn't happen on every login.
I installed Libreoffice from the openbuild service and I observed the following when using Librecalc:
1. Lag time when opening a file.
2. Decreased performance when opening more than one file.
3. Windows freezing when minimizing or maximizing them, or moving them.
4. Windows freezing when using the tiling feature and dragging the cursor to one of the screen edges.
I disabled java and everything works perfectly. Is this the proper course of action? From what I read, I really only need java for the database program.
I am experiencing this behavior on my work computer which is running Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.6 on a windows network.
I can't get any of the video equalizer controls to work. Hue, brightness etc. If I run mplayer the brightness works but not the hue. Xine does better. Brightness, contrast and saturation work but not hue. I installed using the instructions in the multi-media post.

The FF search bar, the Gimp menu and other similar controls are now decorated with a transparent white outline. I do not have any customizations applied and I am unsure how to fix it. Running OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit, GTK 2.22.1, Gnome 2.32.1.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I tried putting Kubuntu Natty Narwhal on yet again and to my surprise it mostly worked. The only major thing wrong with it was my brightness controls didn't work (I have a VPCCW21FX laptop) at first this was an anoyance being blinded by my screen but I soon realized that it was killing my battery life. So having tried to seek help in getting it to work I tried out OpenSUSE. They worked! but as soon as I updated the kernal they no longer worked. No Problem. I reinstalled and told it to never apply that update. Then I installed the official nvidia drivers via repository on the opensuse wiki. they installed and worked but my brightness controls were once again broken.

Im running 11.3 w/ KDE 4.6. I was using Kmix today without issue and accidentally (perhaps out of curiosity) clicked the 'close' box on the tab which presented all of the volume controls. The thing is, I cannot seem to find out how to recreate it. I seem to recall there was some option to create multiple volume control tabs, but I cannot locate.
Could someone point me in the right direction on how to recreate the tab or delete the kmix settings/config which I assume would re-create defaults?

I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using a wireless Xbox 360 controller with openSUSE 11.1. I use it for some emulators and all buttons work fine. There is however an annoying problem, the Xbox controller left joystick controls the cursor and digital pad acts as mouse buttons. So while I play, the cursor moves all around the screen and bad things could happen. Why this behavior? In xorg.conf there seems to be only just 1 mouse. And if I go in Joystick via YaST, there is only a menu to select which joystick I have. But my wireless controller has been automatically detected, I didn't setup anything. Is there a config file that I can modify to stop controlling the mouse with my gamepad?
View 6 Replies View RelatedGot this new motherboard and it's running 11.4 of Opensuse and it works great. Even got the DVI working with the monitor with help of instructions I found here. However the sound is poor and the volume controls just as bad. According to the motherboard docs it has THX Tru Studio sound pro, a Intel H67 (B3) chipset. Six audio ports. And the chipset integration by Realtek ALC837. I have tried to find this information in the sound setup with no luck. What was selected was the Intel model (no other specifics was found). According to the Alsamixer it says HDA Intel PCH and the card and chip is set as PulseAudio. What should the sound card be set to other than Intel?

I planned on going back and re-installing using my own guide to check for mistakes, etc. but I never seem to get around to it, so I'll just post what I have and let you guys comment if you run into issues. Side notes: This guide assumes you want to wipe out Windows XP and run only openSUSE. Sorry, I'm a Gates hater.

I changed the backend of phonon from xine to gstreamer because I wasn't able to play .avi files with xine. I installed libxine1, and libxine1-codecs, but Kaffeine, Dragon Player and Gwenview crashed when trying to play an avi file. After changing the backend I was able to play .avi files, but now I can't play DVD's, which I'm able to do switching back to the xine backend.

I have an Acer 4810T laptop with Intel graphics. I run openSUSE 11.3, and am about to upgrade to 11.4. But both systems still have a very bad bug with screen brightness. The Fn+Arrow keys do change screen brightness, but after using them the system is rendered extremely sluggish and unresponsive. This sluggishness is most pronounced with a very important Wine app I need to use. The only way to fix the sluggishness is to reboot. With 11.4, the problem is worse because the system boots and automatically partially dims the screen, thus making it even more necessary to change the brightness. Neither Gnome nor KDE are able to change the brightness via their power managers. This means that I can't dim my screen automatically upon disconnecting the A/C power.
I have read many experiences from Ubuntu and openSUSE users, who all have the same problem. I have tried both intellegacy and the new intel drivers, and they both have the problem. I have read that some users have improved the situation by upgrading or downgrading the BIOS. Others have been experimenting with kernel patches:

I just installed F13, and many things have changed (was using FC4!). When I restart my network, my NIC card does not come back up with the correct info, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. I want to set the sticky bit on this directory such that if anyone creates a new file, either in the main directory or subdirectories, the ownership remains like above.
Q1: I have the sticky bit set on the main directory (drwxrwsr-x). But for some reason, some of the subdirectories don't have the sticky bit set. Is there a command I can use to change the sticky bit on Directories Only (i.e., not on the files)?

I started using gnome sticky notes along with the Compiz widget layer in Ubuntu 10.04. The problem I'm having is that word wrap on the sticky notes is hit-or-miss. Most of the time the notes will automatically stretch horizontally (even beyond the size of a workspace) rather than break at its current window size. The only other problem I've noticed is that if I right-click on the title of a note, the resulting menu doesn't display correctly (it's looks like a line).Should I reinstall the package it belongs to?
