OpenSUSE Install :: Configure WiFi On The Command Line With NetworkManager Or Ifup?
Mar 24, 2011
I had to uninstall a proprietary ATI driver because it wrecked my X server. Apparently I removed the wrong package, because now the X server won't even start, even with the "nomodeset" flag.
QUESTION 1.How can I configure WiFi on the command line with NetworkManager or ifup, whichever is easier?
QUESTION 2.Which packages do I need to download to restore the X server?

I've had 11.4/KDE working pretty well on dual boot Asus G73SW for a few weeks now. Only issues were the FN-* functions that control keyboard lights and whatnot but no biggie since the essential worked. The last couple of days the update notification was indicating 1,201 updates to be made. Yeah it seemed extreme but I googled around and checked the forums and there was nothing related. I figured I might be missing some packages since I installed from the live KDE CD (still 1202 updates!!!???). So I updated. Big mistake!!!!! Ever since NetworkManager cannot connect to the internet, be it wired or wireless.
Initially it could not even see my home network but it picked it up after I removed the plasmoid from the panel and reinstalled it. However it doesn't respond when I click the network icon and still no connection.I managed to get eth0 working with ifup but not wifi. The last part of network manager log file is quoted below. I can send the whole thing to whoever is interested. I can't make sense of it but maybe someone on the forums can.
Code:
Jul 13 11:09:08 linux-yy10 NetworkManager[1649]: <info> NetworkManager (version 0.8.9997) is starting...

I have just installed 11.4 KDE (having used 11.3 for a while). I was able to use YAST in 11.3 to switch from network manager, to using 'traditional', to connect to wireless network without problems. Since installing (fresh install) 11.4, only network manager seems to work without issue;
using traditional never sets up the wireless connection - or should i say appears not to as no apps will connect (as they do fine using the network manager connection). using 'ifstatus wlan0', seems to suggest there is no configuration file when using the 'traditional' gui. Has any one had similar problems

After spending quite some time on this, I have narrowed it down to:
Adapter works OK with NetworkManager
Adapter works OK with ifup if I run iwconfig after ifup has finished
It eppears to be linked to another thread Probl me de r seau wifi / Network manager in that dhcp needs to be running. (So it may be a 'feature' of RTL819 adaptors) So I've finally worked out that I need to start dhcp first.

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.
I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?

yesterday I installed openSUSE 11.2 on my laptop. But I'm having problem getting the wifi configured properly. During the installation I got the message "No network running" (which I also saw after the installation when using the network configuration module of YaST after switching from ifup to NetworkManager). After installation NetworkManager seemed to work fine, it detected my wifi card, found the network, and I could even connect to it. Then the problems began, no Internet connection. The first thing I tried was pinging Google which yielded an "unknown host" message. So I checked /etc/resolv.conf, to look for the DNS servers, which where missing.
I added them manually and tried again. Still no luck, so I started pinging my router, which worked, tried again pinging Google using one of there IP addresses, which failed. So I ran route to find out which routes where being used, this one gave an unexpected result, because it only showed the route to the local network (I'm not sure about the loopback one, because this was also a lot of times missing when testing):

Doing an install of Suse 11.4 --- and the screen runs off the monitor to the right. A little guess word with the tab key and I could move through the install process by tabbing three times after the ""help" button. As I'm writing this the machine rebooted after initial load and the screen is okay - and I can see the abort-back-next buttons now. But really, what's with that? That's just so unprofessional. Hopefully the dev team reads these forums since there isn't any easily discoverable way to communicate with them. And you don't keep the iso's updated? The BETA of Firefox 4?? Really? Then I can only update to 4.01 from the repository? so I download an unpack the 5.0 from Mozilla -- and find out ./configure no longer works. The archive extractor still doesn't have an "install package" option anywhere, and now I can't use the command line either?

I used a live usb for the installation process. there no GUI came up but i used yast2 to install the live usb. installation went smoothly with no hiccups....i restarted the computer and selected open SUSE 11.2 in the boot menu.
but after booting it again comes to this dark screen with a lot green 'dones' and then finally at the bottom i have my login space....so no desktop.

well, gonna straight-explain what I`ve here: had a Win7 64bit installed machine and created a D drive as I was intended to install Suse there (so it`s `Extended`) after succesfully installed SLED and finally restarted the laptop to see use Win7 again there was no Loader for me to choose which Operation System (I have another machine with XP,Ubuntu and Pardus - never had sucha problem)then I had to chose SLED of course but this time it didn`t bring me to the login page but to the Command Line of SLED, and the thing is that I can`t use command line on linux. tried several times and with failsafe login but stıll having command line and there is no Win7 to run on Loader.

My daughter just broke her laptop screen. I can order another LCD - no problem, but until then she wants to use an external monitor. With Windows, this used to be no big deal, because I would hook up a monitor, hit a key combo on the keyboard, and everything would come up on the other monitor.I know how to do this using the GUI, but unfortunately, I can only see about a 2 inch strip at the top of her computer. I can see the gnome menu bar, and when I go into the Nvidia configuration, I can't make out anything below the tops of the two monitors it detects. (I was able to get it to detect both displays, but I can't see to press the "configure" button.)What I need to do, is configure the new monitor from the command line using the two inches of visible monitor that I have at the top of her broken LCD.

Is there a way I can configure gnome-panel with the command line? I want to be able to write a shell script to switch between my AWN desktop setup and my gnome-panel one.
Also (this is less important) is there an easy way to switch between Gnome and KDE? I would assume no, but if there is that would be cool.

Ive been struggling to configure a wireless interface on Fedora 9I need to configure wlan0 command line only with NO display managerIve tried setting up /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 with the right information, doing dhcpbut no ip is retrieved. Checking the dhcp server logs on the DHCP server - no request is received. The link light on the wireless nic is not on either. iwconfig shows it has an Access point associated and an ESSID but im not getting back any IP.There seems to be very little documenta on how to set up wireless nics command line only on Fedora

so the safest way to go about this is to assume I know nothing. I mean, I have a rough Idea of what a kernel is, no idea what a shell is, etc. I do consider myself computer savvy, but know NOTHING about linux and thats why I'm Diving in, hopefully not too much, this is just to give you an idea of what we're working with here.
After several install attempts I kept getting a blank screen. Whether it be black, white, or the default gnome desktop (without any icons, and simple things like ctrl+alt+backspace just doesn't work, or anything else for that matter) I was ending up with a blank screen. Driver for moniter....maybe....but I did succesfully install it once, and it worked like a charm...shutdown properly, and the next day after work...Boom, same thing after startup.today I started from scratch and re-installed....samething, until I hit the power button, went from the dvd(iso) and did a fail safe, now my resolution is much better than it was the first time..Actual questions.....what did I do to fix it when failsafe never worked before?
Is there a way to save these settings, so I don't run into the problem again, because I don't even want to turn of my computer at this point? If i'm trying to dive in and learn the command line actions, is there any substancial difference between gnome terminal or hitting "c" to bring up the command line?

just installed Debian 8.2 on my ThinkPad X230 laptop using netinst. I installed only basic system and then install packages I need manually. Now I stuck with NetworkManager and Wi-Fi. NetworkManager and its applet (package network-manager-gnome) installed, I can connect to my Wi-Fi network, but after reboot a dialog asking for passphrase for keys appeared and even after entering correct passphrase NetworkManager does not connect to the Wi-Fi, so I need to connect it manually.

i recently got an msi wind U100x running on linux suse enterprise 10 sp1. i am totally new to linux and i believe that msi wind is not helping. i remember at some point seeing an icon in my toolbar to indicate available wifi networks, but it disappeared a few weeks ago, and i was never able to locate it again. out of dispair i reset the computer to factory settings. all i have is "no network connection" icon, and when you click on it you have both enable networking and enable wireless.
i read somewhere in help that i should have a knetworkmanager, but i can't find it anywhere. all i see in my control center is network card, and when i go in there, i go to 'user controlled with networkmanager' and i see 'micro-star international ethernet controller not configured'. before i reset to factory settings i used to have a wireless card as well.
in a word: i am totally lost and don't know where to start. any step by step to help me connect again?
