Ubuntu Networking :: How To Console Into Cell Phone

Oct 28, 2010

if anyone knows of a way to be able to console in to a cell phone? I'm guessing it may be different from one cell phone to the next, but I want to console into my phone, and ftp, or tftp a copy of the OS onto my computer, and try to maybe use gedit or nano to look at the code, and play around with it. I'd like to see where the e911 code is, and create some kind of script that would alert me whenever that gps feature that is available to the cellular providers and the government.

since Americans are required to have a cell phone that is GPS capable, I would like to know if that ever gets activated. Additionally, I would also like to write scripts that would alert me if my microphone is activated.Maybe this is only possible on Droid phones since they are Unix based? Either way, you can readily buy usb cables to connect your phone to your pc to transfer pics, videos, etc. Maybe there is a way to run nmap on that cable connection to find a way to hack in?

General :: Not Authorized To Control Networking In SSH Console

Dec 6, 2010

I want to control Network manager from the command-line. This worked well enough in Ubuntu 10.04 (with cnetworkmanager, nmcli is another possible choice). Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 however, a D-Bus exception is raised when I attempt to activate a connection from within a SSH terminal:

org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.PermissionDenied:
Not authorized to control networking.

It may have to do with /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf; This issue occurs only when I am ssh'd into the machine; in a gnome session I don't get the same issue -- with the same (admin) user account in both cases.

Networking :: Device Is Configurable Only Over Console Line?

Oct 18, 2010

I have a configuration file for a network device(2100 lines). This device is configurable only over console line. If I copy chunks of those lines into terminal(I use minicom), there will be mistakes (sometimes some characters missing, space characters added etc). Hardware flow control and software flow control doesn't help either(as I use RS232-to-USB converter, I'm even not sure, if RTS and CTS signals are implemented). I tried with cu utility, but same issues appeared. There will be mistakes even if I copy in ~100 line parts. What causes those missing/added characters? Is there a terminal emulation program under Linux, which supports pausing before each byte/line transfer?

Ubuntu Networking :: No Internet After Installing RAM?

Apr 24, 2010

Today I put in two brand new RAM sticks, same brand as the two I already have in there only difference is the new ones don't have the giant heatsinks that cover the stick. I have 4 slots for RAM, and I had 2 gigs in there, 1 gig in the first, and 1 in the 3rd. I put the two new ones in the empty slots. Everything worked fine, so it seemed. I was able to boot up, log into Ubuntu. It looked like everything worked, said I had internet access by the icon up on the top panel. The only thing that was curious was my weather app wasn't updating. So I went into a web browser, and the home page showed up fine. Which was the default, the ubuntu google search engine. I tried to go to another site though, and it kept looking for the site, for a while but never found it. I tried multiple sites, same thing. I tried to ping www.ubuntu.com, and www.yahoo.com and it just hung for a while, after a while it couldn't find it. I tried ifconfig eth0, and even just ifconfig. It showed that eth0 was connected, it had the ip address, the DNS address, the MAC, everythting. Only problem I could see was at the end it said something like Interupts: 18, I don't know if that's normal or not.

So I tried then to reset the router, no difference. I tried resetting the hub (at least I think it's a hub, could be a switch or something), which is connected to the router, and the hub connects to my computer. Now that, made it worse. Now the icon for my internet has disappeared, well it tried to reconnect but can't. ifconfig eth0 brings up no ip address anymore, no DNS, no nothing. I tried rebooting, didn't help.

So here I am, and I'm definatly in need of some help. I find it very hard to believe that adding new RAM would kill my ability to get online, that doesn't make any sense to me. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, had 2 gigs in there, and now have 4. Edit: I tried rebooting once again, and this time when logging on Ubuntu it for some reason checked my filesystem for errors, found none as far as I can tell, then logged on. Once I logged in, it connected again to the internet, but it's doing the same thing it was before I restarted the hub. Says I'm connected, but can't visit any webpage, weather isn't updating, but homepage is showing up, etc.[URL].. Which is the same RAM I had in there, minus the one in there had a giant grey incasing/heatsink on them.

Ubuntu Networking :: Disabled After Using / Installing VPN?

Aug 7, 2011

Everything was working fine today and for many days before today. (this is a pretty fresh install of 10.10 Maverick).

I installed a VPN connection (PPTP) to connect to work.

That worked fine. i connected, remoted into the machine I wanted and did what I had to do.

I was ABOUT to disconnect from the VPN and when I clicked on the network manager icon BAM it said DISCONNECTED. saved me another click or 2. But now I have no networking at all.

The network manager icon says "Networking disabled"

I tried: warm booting a couple times cold booting a couple times

I also tried:

Code:
service restart networking
and
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

[Code].....

I would really just like to delete/uninstall anything that has to do with VPN's and see if that works. Or maybe reinstall network manager. Are those reasonable places to start?

Code:

Checking in /lib/modules/2.6.31-19-generic for ieee80211 components...

Ubuntu Networking :: Verifying (and Installing) Mac80211 In 8.04?

Mar 1, 2010

I am reasonably technical but new to Linux. I almost guarantee there will be simple things that I don't understand. I am trying to get a USB wireless adaptor working with aircrack-ng and have managed to find that I should have the mac80211 drivers installed and active to support the rtl8187L and B chips. (I also need to patch them apparently, but first things first).

I am working with Ubuntu 8.04LT (I am fairly sure) and do not seem at the moment to be able to update to a more recent version on the target machine. The kernel is 2.6.24-27. I followed instructions to blacklist the r8187 and ieee80211 modules, which seemed to go quite smoothly.

I now need to get the mac80211 module loaded, but can't find out how. The information at Aircrack-ng and related sites seems to indicate that I expect the drivers to be already in my build of Ubuntu but they do not seem to be loading. The suggestion seems to be that they will load automatically. I have found some stuff in /lib/modules/2.6.22-14 and /lib/modules/2.6.22-27, and also in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-27 which is probably relevant but I don't know what if anything to do with it. If anyone needs more detailed information, just tell me what you need to know, and how to get it.
