Jul 14, 2010i have a computer running xubuntu that I want to connect to a computer running Debian. Can some point me in the right direction on how to set it up. There doesn't appear to be alot of options and my knowledge on networking related commands is lacking somewhat. All I need it to do is see the Debian comp and grab files from a folder on one of its HDD's.

May 21, 2011I have successfully installed xubuntu on my 2nd partition of hard disk through unetbootin. everything works fine except wireless network. my ethernet works good, i am tethering through my android mobile no problem....just wireless says disconnected where as it is enabled. As far I know its sould scan all the available wireless AP near me and it should appear below wireless networks, and from there I should be able to select the AP which I want to connct...

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Nov 17, 2010i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

May 13, 2010So, I tried reviving my old windows laptop by installing Ubuntu on it, but it turned out to be too heavy for it, so i turned towards Lubuntu and Xubuntu.
Now, for the couple of days I used Ubuntu, until i decided it's moving too slow and I should go for a lighter version, my USB wireless adapter (and the touchpad, but that's a subject for another subforum) worked fine.
When I installed Lubuntu and Xubuntu, it stopped working. I tried using network-manager and wicd to make my adapter scan for wireless networks, but it's like the USB isn't even there. When I pulled it out and stuck it on my main PC (that is running Ubuntu), it was discovered immediately and connected to my router. But I can't do it on either Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
PS: If anyone has a quick hint about why my touchpad is working during the installation of Xubuntu, but not after it's complete and loads the desktop, I'll make a new post in the relevent section. A USB mouse works fine everywhere, but a touchpad isn't moving the pointer.

Nov 14, 2010I am trying to connect to my samba server with xubuntu, so far with no luck.
I am trying to use fusesmb and have been following these instructions:

the top ones say to use Applications - System - shared folders to setup smb client. Xubuntu maverick doesn't seem to have that menu point. So I copied the smb.conf from my desktop machine. libsmbclient is installed.
fuse as such seems to run since teh folder that i designated as mount point (~/Network) changes owner to root when i run fusesmb Network. But apart from that nothing happens.

Mar 6, 2011Alright yall, I just got my wireless usb device to work on ubuntu 10.10. I did alot of searching and I finally figured it out. this is what I did.
1.Download the linux drivers from this post, its called Ralink_RT3572USB_drv2400.zip
2.Extract them to a directory.
3.Make sure you have build-essential installed on your computer. you can do this by opening a terminal
and typing

4.Now install linux headers so that you can compile the drivers.

5.Now in your terminal goto where you extracted the Ralink_RT3572USB_drv2400 files.

May 10, 2011I have a folder on my windows xp machine that I am trying to share with my xubuntu machine (10.04) and I have been searching all night, and have found several resources for accomplishing this, but nothing that seems to work with this version of xubuntu. I've downloaded Samba and tried the smb://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/Shared Command and it says "No such file or directory". There is no "Shared Folders" under System, Network, or any directory. Right clicking on a folder produces no sharing options. The smb.conf file seems to have destroyed itself out of spite.

Nov 10, 2010I have 2 laptops, one is a Acer travelmate (running xubuntu) and another one is a Dell studio (Running Windows 7). I also have an iMac..2 external hard drive and a BSNL 3G usb data card. I want to setup a network so i can share my files and internet connection between the 3 systems. I don't know what i want to do is possible or not. what i want to do:
1) connect the usb data card to Acer and share the internet connection using the inbuilt wireless card in the laptop so that the dell and imac can access it.
2) connecting the 2 ext. hard drive to Acer and sharing the files over the same connection( wireless connection used to share internet with other systems) so that i can access the files from my dell and imac. I want to mention that i don't have a router.
if yes..how? and if not why? i'm a newbie..so plz help me..earlier also this forum helped me a lot in learning linux..hope this time also i will have some good experiences.

I do not have internet access on a laptop I am trying to upgrade. It has no ethernet port. I may resort to buying a USB to ethernet adapter but I spent more than I would like to have already. I have tried every command in the HOWTO for wireless difficulties and posted the output.

Fedora Networking :: Bridged Networking And NetworkManager - No Network Connection Because Network Isn't Managed
Mar 2, 2011I have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)
But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)
The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.
Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?

Jun 15, 2010I recently installed Xubuntu on my old P3 laptop (Compaq Armada E500 if anyone is familiar). The laptop is a bit old, so both wired and wireless networking is done via PCMCIA cards. I have 2 cards installed, one for each purpose. I can't find the dongle for the wired card right now, so I am trying to use the wireless card. I am able to find the network I want to connect to, and type in the password since the network is secured. It tries to connect but then pops up again asking for the password (I know it is correct). Is this card supported by linux/compatible? I tried finding drivers online but the sites that had drivers were down.
