It says ,"Server is already active for display 0, if the server is no longer running remove /tmp/.XO-lock and startup again"I looked around for a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but it does not exist. Ubuntu :: Keys Won't Bind When Running Fluxbox On Xubuntu

Feb 27, 2011

i'm running fluxbox on my xubuntu 10.10. I'm just trying to set up the key file and the keys i enter will randomly not bind. Like for example:

# open a terminal
Mod1 F1 :Exec x-terminal-emulator
# open a dialog to run programs
Mod1 F2 :Exec fbrun
# filhanterare
Mod1 F3 :Exec thunar
# textredigerare
Mod1 F4 :Exec notepad

terminal, fbrun and notepad works fine but not thunar. i've tried a million different combos of keys and modifiers and it seems totally random weather it works or not. sometimes what works one minute don't after next reconfigure.

When i run the original keys-file i get this log output:

Keys: Invalid key/modifier on line 66):

I get similar outputs when i change the keys-file for other numbers too but it doesn't seem to happen for every key that doesn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Creating An Extremely Minimal Version Of Xubuntu Using XFCE - Go With Mini.iso Or The Xubuntu Alternate Install CD ?

Jan 12, 2010

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:

HTML Code:

http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:

xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Networking :: Generic Way To Block Specific Port?

Jul 9, 2011

Recently I discovered that we were accidentally running a POP server (port 110), when we only should have been running the encrypted version thereof (port 995). This wouldn't have been a problem if the port was blocked in the first place. I had wrongly assumed that any port NOT specifically listed in one's firewall rules (CentOS 5 with default iptables installation) would be blocked. I thought you had to add a rule to /etc/sysconfig/iptables in order to open up a port. Apparently this is NOT the case. So is it true that if I install some random software that starts listening on any number of ports that I have not specifically mentioned in /etc/sysconfig/iptables that it will not be blocked - it will work right away?

Anyway, I guess two questions:
1) What's a generic way to block a specific port? I use rules like this to "open" ports (although is this not needed if they're open anyway?)
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 995 -j ACCEPT
What's the analog of this kind of rule to *block* a port?
2) Is there a better way to configure iptables to block all ports that are not mentioned in its configuration? Is that dangerous? (will it block things that I don't want to block?)

Ubuntu Networking :: Xubuntu/Lubuntu: Wireless Works On One But Not The Others

May 13, 2010

So, I tried reviving my old windows laptop by installing Ubuntu on it, but it turned out to be too heavy for it, so i turned towards Lubuntu and Xubuntu.

Now, for the couple of days I used Ubuntu, until i decided it's moving too slow and I should go for a lighter version, my USB wireless adapter (and the touchpad, but that's a subject for another subforum) worked fine.
When I installed Lubuntu and Xubuntu, it stopped working. I tried using network-manager and wicd to make my adapter scan for wireless networks, but it's like the USB isn't even there. When I pulled it out and stuck it on my main PC (that is running Ubuntu), it was discovered immediately and connected to my router. But I can't do it on either Xubuntu or Lubuntu.

PS: If anyone has a quick hint about why my touchpad is working during the installation of Xubuntu, but not after it's complete and loads the desktop, I'll make a new post in the relevent section. A USB mouse works fine everywhere, but a touchpad isn't moving the pointer.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Samba Server With Xubuntu?

I am trying to use fusesmb and have been following these instructions:

and these

[URL]

the top ones say to use Applications - System - shared folders to setup smb client. Xubuntu maverick doesn't seem to have that menu point. So I copied the smb.conf from my desktop machine. libsmbclient is installed.

fuse as such seems to run since teh folder that i designated as mount point (~/Network) changes owner to root when i run fusesmb Network. But apart from that nothing happens.

Ubuntu Networking :: Install AE1000 Rt2870 On Xubuntu?

Mar 6, 2011

Alright yall, I just got my wireless usb device to work on ubuntu 10.10. I did alot of searching and I finally figured it out. this is what I did.

1.Download the linux drivers from this post, its called Ralink_RT3572USB_drv2400.zip

2.Extract them to a directory.

3.Make sure you have build-essential installed on your computer. you can do this by opening a terminal
and typing
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
4.Now install linux headers so that you can compile the drivers.
Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
5.Now in your terminal goto where you extracted the Ralink_RT3572USB_drv2400 files.
once in that directory type

Right clicking on a folder produces no sharing options. The smb.conf file seems to have destroyed itself out of spite.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot See Network Icon - Nm-applet Running - Notification Area Running

Dec 25, 2010

Hi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?

I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.

When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable

It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.

I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"

It says:

What can I do to connect to the internet? I have a flash stick if its possible to download a .deb package on this mac and transfer it over to my other laptop to fix the problem. If its possible.
