Networking :: Lucent WavLAN Card, Xubuntu / Dongle For The Wired Card?
Jun 15, 2010
I recently installed Xubuntu on my old P3 laptop (Compaq Armada E500 if anyone is familiar). The laptop is a bit old, so both wired and wireless networking is done via PCMCIA cards. I have 2 cards installed, one for each purpose. I can't find the dongle for the wired card right now, so I am trying to use the wireless card. I am able to find the network I want to connect to, and type in the password since the network is secured. It tries to connect but then pops up again asking for the password (I know it is correct). Is this card supported by linux/compatible? I tried finding drivers online but the sites that had drivers were down.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Server. I can't get my Wireless Card & Wired Card to work at the same time. My interfaces file is incorrect, when I comment out 1 of the interfaces the other works. I have attached my interfaces file.

Just installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.

I have no internet connection. I am running dual boot windows XP and ubuntu. The card works fine in windows, but doesn't work at all in Ubuntu. This is the card I am using Realtek rtl8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. I am using Ubuntu 8.10, codename intrepid. I hate windows because of the viruses I contract everyday, so I decided to use Ubuntu, but this does no good without networking. so I can get online. What I do now? It is an onboard LAN card, cable is plugged in a green light is on, ubuntu just doesn't recognize it.

I have a 64 bit install of Ubuntu 10.04, I was surfing up to 11:30pm EST last night, shut down for the night, upon reboot am unable to connect to the internet or my local network. Ubuntu seems to think that I have no ethernet cables connected. My networking is controlled by my motherboard (Gigabyte P55A-UD4P) and the problem is not on my cable modems side. The modem has multiple wired jacks, all of them are unresponsive with my Ubuntu PC while my roommate can connect to all of them with his Windows 7 PC. Both network cables (the one connecting to his box and the one connecting to mine) are interchangeable: They both work on his and neither on mine, so there is no broken cable.I've followed the troubleshooting in other posts, here are some commonly requested diagnostics:
ifconfig -a
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 6c:f0:49:53:1f:c0
[code]...

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

Ok, so I upgraded my acer aspire one to the new Ubuntu 10, and at first everything was working fine, except the audio. Now, for some reason, my wireless and ethernet ports have died. I can't get online by either method. I can do ifconfig <device> up and it will show up if i do iwconfig or ifconfig, but the wireless isn't associated with the AP. Currently I'm trying to load some drivers for my atheros card, and we'll see how that works outReally I was wondering, how come the modules don't load at boot time, and how can I fix this? I've been a Linux user for quite sometime, however I've been more of end user

I just installed Lucid Lynx on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. The problem I'm having is that my wired network card has died on me prior to installation. I'm having the hardest time finding the required files to make my Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card work without being able to download any packages from the web. If anyone knows which files I need and which order I should use to install them that would be great.

I have a LAN (2 PC !) wire connected and I use a Huawei e182e to join the internet (If you have problem to install the Huawei on Linux, don't install drivers proposed on forums or don't try to unlock it. It's not necessary, simply install a kernel > 2.6.34 and it will install itself as a perfect plug and play). On the unconnected machine, the Internet is accessible normally from the broadband dongle, but the connection stops when I plug the LAN cable. It's normal since the PC cannot use both network connections simultaneously without a previous configuration, and the question is precisely there !
Bridging could be a solution but mobile broadband uses ppp protocol that is not on the same layer as wired LAN. brctl refuses to add the key into the bridge configuration. Vtun seems a better approach since it works more independently from the protocols, but it must be installed on both sides and the broadband dongles does not accept software installation in it. Documentation from Huawei is quite inexistent. Actually the story could be the same for a computer connected to a wired LAN and using a wireless dongle, but here bridging is feasible (not tested by me) because they work on the same layer. I tried to deactivate LAN switching in the BIOS: no result static address with gateway pointing on the other device (I tried everything) no result. How to bridge a ppp dongle with a wired LAN?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an older PC and I'm having problems with the network card built into the motherboard. When I connect an ethernet cable into the ethernet port I get a solid amber light, and I can't connect to my router, (which is being directly connected). Nothing is shown in Network Connections, but on another PC with the same version of Ubuntu it shows "Auto eth0", and it works just fine connecting with the router. How do I fix this? I'm an Ubuntu noob so I'm not really sure what to do here.
The network card is an Intel 82547EI Gigabit LAN controller, and Intel's website offered a driver available for my kernel version of Linux. However I was typing everything it told me to do in terminal, (which half the time I have no clue what I'm typing actually means), but I ended up getting some errors towards the end of the install process. I'm not sure if I messed something up or the driver just isn't going to work.
I'm hoping there is an easier fix for this, I've been searching the net all night trying to find someone with a similar problem and I haven't found any. I think I have another ethernet card which I might pop in and see if that works....but I figure I'll most likely run into the same problem because I know for sure the motherboards network card works - has on Windows, I just can't get it working in Ubuntu.

I am trying to install my Linksys Wireless-B WPM11v4 card on Xubuntu. I think my main problem is stemming from ndiswrapper not cooperating. It won't install, and something to do with ndiswrapper errors up when I install ndisgtk, which makes it work incorrectly. I think I have the proper driver (I downloaded it from the linksys site. I have the one from the cd, but most of what I said suggested against using it). I have gcc installed and updated (so it tells me). There's a possibility I have not blacklisted something I need too... But I gave myself root access, and edited the blacklist file to block out wireless drivers (I think? I believe that's what the walkthrough I was reading told me to do. It's on WifiDocs? I can't link to it yet.)
I have tried to do it all myself, and I have managed a couple things so far, but I only ever began touching Linux about... 4 days ago? Tops. I would really appreciate anyone's help.
XD
So what I am specifically asking is, can someone identify where I am going wrong, and tell/point me something to fix it? My goal is to install the wireless driver.

Unfortunately, due to the layout of my new apartment I'm going to have to run my desktop PC with a wireless card instead of a wired connection.
Googling turns up a lot of out-of-date information on hardware compatibility for Linux and PC wireless cards. Could anyone provide a suggestion or two for known-good, 2.6-kernel compatible PC wireless cards?

I'm running slackware 12.2 and I have yet to get the b44 kernel driver working with 2.6.27.31 (custom build, b44 compiled in). Does it require a firmware cutter (ex. b43-fwcutter)? Does it work in later kernel versions out-of-the-box?
On a second note, if it is better supported in later kernels, would it be problematic to upgrade kernels (for instance, anything other than just building the new kernel via instructions in the Slackbook)?
I have searched many times but just have come across "it should work" which it doesn't, at least here...

I have a dell mp1210 xps laptop. I just recently installed installed Ubuntu 9.10 and am very green. With difficulty I managed to install the drivers for the wireless card and now have wireless on the laptop. In order to get the wireless working I had to restart my computer, and once it booted up again the wireless works, but there is no trace of eth0-my wired network device (Broadcom BCM4401-B0) which was working fine before I got the wireless adapter working. Lspci still shows the device as it did when it was functioning, but ifconfig only shows my local loopback and wlan0 (my wireless device). I am not sure how eth0 got deleted, I am wondering if maybe I have to set up some sort of switching between the wired and wireless adapters so they are not both active at the same time. Any suggestions would be really nice, I have been digging through the forums, but I am unsure of what went wrong or what to do about it.

I have searched and have not found anything specific to my issue. I am currently using NDISWrapper to load the bcmwl15 driver and when it's active it works beautifully.Problem is sometimes at boot, the card doesn't "turn on" and I don't know how else to describe it. The OS does not even detect that the hardware is present. I have disabled wireless hotkey in BIOS. The only way to make the wireless card "active" is to reboot with the wiredconnection to the router. After doing that the wireless card "wakes up" and works awesome. Is there anything I can do to make sure the driver load at boot?mes I get the error that NDISWrapper is not modprobbed when I go to network configuration and if I wish to do i now? I don't know if that has anything to do with the boot sequence. Using the <modprobe ndiswrapper> command as root does nothing permanant

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.
i know no linux is or opsys is perfect. im just looking for one that is stable and works the pc correctly. i know its a big thing to ask. i know no one can tell me that. but just looking for suggestions. im thinking of downloading suse and does all the downloads support live sessions.

My video card developed problems, so I followed the suggestion in this thread:
Quote: Boot into recovery mode, then choose root, for a command prompt and enter
Code: dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
but my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit system still won't boot. Shortly after the ubuntu logo comes up, before the login, my screen goes black and there is no more video signal. What else can I do to reset the video configuration? The card only has this info on it: I could put the card back in the system, reboot, and then pre-configure the system to drop to the intel 865G on-board video, but the msi card has intermittent problems and will spontaneously re-boot several times during the first ten minutes of turning on the system.

I recently installed a startech PCI usb expansion card...All went well and all external devices connected show up without a hitch. However a day ago The card/devices just STOPPED. I rebooted and no avail. Rebooted a second time got a IRQ 19 failure error. Then on a third try It showed up and worked fine... This has happened twice. Here's my IRQ print after running cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0 CPU1
0: 132 3 IO-APIC-edge timer
1: 0 146 IO-APIC-edge i8042
7: 1 0 IO-APIC-edge
I am assuming that the second to the last entry is the pci usb card. Is there a way to home in more deriectly to find and troubleshot the problem and see if its module or IRQ?

Looking for a card reader/writer that will support most current card types. I am running Fedora 12 x86_64 on a home-grown desktop. Are there any gotchas, that I need to watch for? Also, Internal vs. external, any benefits of one over the other, or is it just personal preference?
