I have a computer with xubuntu 9.10 and a pc with kubuntu 9.10, and I need to operate on the xubuntu desktop from kubuntu. On KDE there are Krfb/krdc for the desktop, but what can i install on xubuntu to do this?
View 5 Repliesi just got my xubuntu , and i'm pretty satisfied with it , i mean : it works ok for my very old system (512mb ram , integrated video card , pentium4 procesor 478 2.8 ghz) forced to use it , because i had to take my motherboard to warranty .... anyway , i just wanted to know how can i connect my pc ( xubuntu ) with another laptop ( i would like to have file transfer , and why not control over the desktop from my laptop , or control my laptop from my pc , i think it is called remote desktop ) . My network connection is through a modem , that is connected to a router from which goes a lan cable to my pc (xubuntu ) and my laptop is wireless connected to the router . My laptop is using windows 7.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI usually use Ubuntu, but installed Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Fedora (xfce). However, none of these three will boot into the desktop! Xubuntu and Fedora-xfce seem to boot, but before it loads the desktop the screen stays black and nothing happends. With Kubuntu, it loads the login screen but every time I try to log in the screen goes black, then it returns to the login screen again. It will just keep doing this until you reboot or shutdown.
I cant see any type of error messages come up and my current install of Ubuntu (11.04) seems unaffected.Does anybody know what is happening here? is it a common bug/problem or something no one has really heard of before? Im just really stumped and cant seem to get anywhere with it,
I am using the universal usb installer from [URL] and i have tried putting kubuntu on my usb flash drive and when i plug it in my netbook and boot from usb it comes up kubuntu and it gives me options and i select install to harddrive and when i press enter is comes to a grey screen and nothing happens? am i supposed to type something in? after i formated my usb flash drive and tried xubuntu and the same thing happend...?

I have won my fight and my father in law accepted to give gnu/linux a try as his server and to run on the computer of the new company he is starting. One feature he would like is to be able to access his work desktop (graphicaly) from home. On my side, I would like to be able to control his desktop from home if I need to show him things. I already can SSH in terminal to install and maintain stuff but, to move the mouse around and point him where to click or what to use would be invaluable.

While in Debian, i could control the volume of laptop speakers and headphone in separate channels. So, i could, for example, play a music in laptop speakers and in headphone, at same time.
In April, I've migrate to Kubuntu 10.04. I cannot do it any longer! There are no two separate channels in KMix. Everytime I plug headphone, it redirect the audio output from speakers to heaphone, and when i take the headphone out, it puts taudio output back to speakers. How can I control volume of each channel manually in Kubuntu 10.04?
Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.

Ubuntu doesn't load. While booting, it displays an error message saying some of the lists in ipblock couldn't be loaded, followed by a red-coloured "[fail]". Then, the screen goes black and shows nothing more. So, how do I stop ipblock from starting at startup (from the command line)?

I have installed Xubuntu on an old laptop which has a floppy disk.
On the desktop where mounted drives will normally appear, it constantly shows the floppy disk on the desktop even though there is not floppy inside, so I have disabled the desktop from showing mounted drives, however now anything else like a CD or USB drive will not show up on the desktop. Is there a way to choose what types of devices are shown on the desktop?
I have considered disabling the floppy from the BIOS(assuming that is possible), but I would rather not go down that road just yet.

Added the restricted driver module that I needed Nvidia, added the Compiz settings manager, but I cant seem to find a way to enable desktop effects. I realize that Xubuntu uses the XFCE window manger which is sort of light weight compared to Gnome or KDE, so I am asking if anyone has managed to get the desktop effects running in a similar environment. I checked and observed that the nvidia module has been loaded.

I was wondering if it would be secure to add xubuntu-desktop to my server and then open RDP so my colleuges can jump in and out as they need to. Would it bring any major security risks to my server to do this?I have heard there are ways to put a chroot around an RDP session, so it is like logging into a virtual machine, how would I go about that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Xubuntu 10.10, fresh i don't configure or installed another program, i only installed nvidia drivers (I have a Geforce 9600 GT video card). The entire operating system, and xfce 4.6 was working fine. After, I make an upgrade to xfce 4.8, and when i loged on, everything loaded ok: xfce 4.8 version is working fine, the panels loaded and i can add items.
But there is a problem: My wallpaper image doesn't appear on desktop (only brown solid color), it doesn't show icons, i can't change wallaper in configuration panel (i can add an image but it does not appear in desktop), when I plug in a pendrive usb icon does no appear. And when I right click on the deadspace on the background the right click menu does not come up.
When i open desktop folder in thunar there is information, but icon files does not appear in desktop I thing that maybe is a setting that i can solve typing something in terminal, but i don't know what, i searched in google and in this forum and i found only one post but not related to xfce 4.8 and it was not useful[URL]...
I have installed Xubuntu 11.04 to dual boot with older LTS version. When booting 11.04 it auto shows LTS root & home volumes on desktop. I wish to hide them (home encrypted anyway.)

There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was running kubuntu 7.10 from 2007 till two days back. Thought it quite old, so wanted to upgrade from 7.10 to 9.10, and if I like the latest kde 4 (since I've not used it yet), the plan was to use the lucid lynx. The two phase upgrade from 7.10 -> 8.04 -> 9.10 went seamlessly without any hitch.
But now the problem started to occur, and I will point them one by one:
1. While booting, the startup splash screen falls into a console which read "checking battery state ... DONE" and it stays there forever. So, I opened another terminal by ctrl-alt-F1, gave my login id, password, type startx to go into the graphical mode.
I checked the /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc file and made the Code:
I Also tried the other suggestions like restarting the kdm and dpkg-reconfigure. But the problem still exist.
Now I see, that the console is not stucking at check battery state message , rather its going to the tty1 and asking for the login/password.

2. I want to stop the notification/system sound for application, e.g. while closing a button in griffith or closing a window in pidgin the system emits a sound, I want to stop all these sounds, how to do that?
3. In kde3, I can search file under the present directory using konqueror, now I see konqueror has a search bar, but that is for web, not in the local file system. I am missing this very helpful feature of konqueror, can I somehow brought it back?
4. This issue is not 9.10 specific but faced in 7.10 .. Whenever I try to play an audio cd the system just freezes. The only in error dmesg is
