Ubuntu Networking :: Xubuntu Doesn't Like To Share With Windows?

I have a folder on my windows xp machine that I am trying to share with my xubuntu machine (10.04) and I have been searching all night, and have found several resources for accomplishing this, but nothing that seems to work with this version of xubuntu. I've downloaded Samba and tried the smb://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/Shared Command and it says "No such file or directory". There is no "Shared Folders" under System, Network, or any directory. Right clicking on a folder produces no sharing options. The smb.conf file seems to have destroyed itself out of spite.
I'm running Lucid and and trying to get Samba set up to allow sharing files on my network. My problem is that my Windows laptop (Win7) can't see the Linux PC when I click on Network. It only shows my own laptop and my roommate's Vista laptop. However, if I manually connect to the computer (\serenity) it works just fine.
Right now I'm simply using the smb.conf that comes with the package and adding my share info.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.
I have a desktop pc running Windows 7 and a netbook running xubuntu 9.10. What I am trying to do is to access the shared folders on my windows 7 pc on my xubuntu netbook.
i just got my xubuntu , and i'm pretty satisfied with it , i mean : it works ok for my very old system (512mb ram , integrated video card , pentium4 procesor 478 2.8 ghz) forced to use it , because i had to take my motherboard to warranty .... anyway , i just wanted to know how can i connect my pc ( xubuntu ) with another laptop ( i would like to have file transfer , and why not control over the desktop from my laptop , or control my laptop from my pc , i think it is called remote desktop ) . My network connection is through a modem , that is connected to a router from which goes a lan cable to my pc (xubuntu ) and my laptop is wireless connected to the router . My laptop is using windows 7.
I have 2 laptops, one is a Acer travelmate (running xubuntu) and another one is a Dell studio (Running Windows 7). I also have an iMac..2 external hard drive and a BSNL 3G usb data card. I want to setup a network so i can share my files and internet connection between the 3 systems. I don't know what i want to do is possible or not. what i want to do:
1) connect the usb data card to Acer and share the internet connection using the inbuilt wireless card in the laptop so that the dell and imac can access it.
2) connecting the 2 ext. hard drive to Acer and sharing the files over the same connection( wireless connection used to share internet with other systems) so that i can access the files from my dell and imac. I want to mention that i don't have a router.
if yes..how? and if not why? i'm a newbie..so plz help me..earlier also this forum helped me a lot in learning linux..hope this time also i will have some good experiences.
I have been looking in the forums but I found no solution for my problem.I already configured Samba and I am sharing folders, printers, etc. (Samba, authentification mode = user, guest account = nobody, share the folder give access to them, enable the permission to access, write, etc.) and seems to be working well.I am trying to connect a Windows to my shared folder in Ubuntu. The only problem is that Samba rejects it and doesn't ask for the password. It just drop the users (from Windows and Ubuntu systems) that try to access to my folders.So when it do in a Terminal sudo smbpasswd -a USERNAMEand I type no password, then it works they everybody can access to those shared but when I type any password then it comes back to the same problem that Samba never asks for passwords and rejects the users.
So the solution would be just give no password to share the files, but the other problem is that every time I restart the user session (restarting the computer, logging out, etc.) it just comes back to the same problem that Samba drops the users and doesn't ask for the password. Seems that every time I restart the system just forgets that I set no password.Another thing is that when I set authentication mode = shareThen nothing works. No password, no access just is possible to see it.
I have a usb 1tb drive that I want to share over my netowork, but when i share it through nautilus, it doesn't mount right on other computers, ect. Is there a way to mount it. The location of the drive is /media/FreeAgent Drive___
I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.
I have a Ubuntu box (10.10 x64) that i use for XBMC (a media center), everything works fine when i boot up and start adding network shares (the shares are on a Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Server). it doesn't matter if i use NFS or SAMBA to mount the shares, both work. BUT when i reboot i get problems The share mounts come up but to late, XBMC doesn't see the share when it starts.
The thing i see is : When i boot up the lights of my NIC (realtek 8111) are on and flickering, but just a few seconds before the login prompt comes up the lights are off. And then after 15 to 20 seconds everything comes up again, and the shares are mounted, but to late for XBMC (my mediacenter software) i've installed new drivers for my network card (removed r8169 and installed r8168 ) but the problem is still there.
If I go to system - preferences - personal file sharing, I cannot select "share files over the network." The panel is greyed out and the message "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your computer" is shown
It ever so usefully doesn't tell me what those packages are though! - It'd be nice to have more useful error messages or the ability to click to install them...
Anyway, what do I have to do to get this going again?! I've installed everything to do with samba, webdav that I can find but still no cigar...
Since I have 3 Network cards in my Desktop PC I've configured it to act as a Router using GNU/Linux Ubuntu Lucid in combination with Samba so I could share my internet connection. It works on any laptop a connect to it using any of the network cards ports [regardless of the operating system installed on the Laptops], but when I plug that same network cable to any Desktop PC [regardless of the operating System installed] it doesn't even light the LED in the netcards. From the Client PC seems like nothing is plugged in the the netcards.
I have recently installed ubuntu on my old pc. i wanted to share my PC with my laptop running windows 7. i have a wireless connection and the file sharing in windows is managed by network magic, but till now i m not able to share folder with windows 7, my Ubuntu pc can see the laptop folder but is not able to mount it and my windows 7 cannot detect ubuntu at all, i recently saw a post about windows live id assistant(and to uninstall it) but i think that its not installed on my laptop.
I can use smbclient -U name //ip.adresss/"My Place" to connect with no errors, but nautilus will not open the folder. nautilus discovers the computer but not the folder. maybe I need some debugging info from nautilus...
I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.
My laptop has Ubuntu 9.10. It can connect to shares on my XP and Vista computers without issue, but cannot connect to a share on my Windows 7 system. I'm using "Connect to Server" and have tried by both Computer name and IP address. When I click connect, it prompts me for User ID, workgroup and password, however when I enter them, the same prompt comes back a few seconds later and is blank. I don't receive any errors, it just won't connect.My XP and Vista systems can connect to the Windows 7 share, just not the Ubuntu system
I have a Windows XP box with an HP5610 connected to a USB port. I have a Dell notebook computer loaded with Ubuntu 9.10. I have the two networked via a wireless connection and can share folders/files between the two with no problem. Unfortunately, I cannot share the Windows printer with the Ubuntu box. I can go through the printer setup with Samba on the notebook and the HP is detected however, whenever I go to verify I get an invalid argument error.
In reading one of the posts it suggested pinging the ubuntu box from the Windows box. Since I already have viable file sharing connection does that come in play at all?
Ive been trying for a week now to connect my ubuntu laptop to my windows xp desktop so that I can copy my pics on the desktop over to the laptop. Im using a crossover cable and ubuntu 10.04
I have tried too many things to bother explaining... including reinstalling ubuntu.
I have managed to get ubuntu to ping to xp. I had to set the ip address and netmask (?) manually.
From here i cannot get to my shared file on the windows computer.
Ive tried using nautilus and clicking on network.... I get an icon called "Windows Network" but cant browse further. Ive also tried clicking "file", "connect to netowrk" and typing in the ip address with/out share name. Ive tried using the desktop's computer name etc. Ive enabled the Guest account on windows. I have run sudo apt-get install smbfs and installed samba from the software centre. There are lots of "sambas" in the software centre... i installed the one simply called "samba"
Explain to me what I have to do to move my pics from xp to ubuntu.
Recently, I've again been trying to get file sharing working on my home network. I made some progress last night, getting so far as having all the shares on my Windows XP desktop visible to a netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 & connected wirelessly. But I ran into some snags.
Here's what I'm working with:
-a desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate -a desktop which dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3 -a netbook which dual boots Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu 10.04.
Everything connects wired except the netbook, which connects wirelessly. The router assigns each a specific internal IP address, so in effect all have static internal IP addresses, tied to the MAC addresses of their network adapters.
I have Samba Server Configuration Tool installed on both the desktop (Ubuntu 9.10) and netbook (Ubuntu 10.04). Versions are 1.2.63 in both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04.
Here's as far as I got last night:
-Shares on the Windows XP machine were accessible from both the Windows 7 machine and Ubuntu 10.04 on the netbook, with no password required.
-I configured Samba on both machines to be part of the same workgroup (named PENGUIN) as the Windows 7 machine and the desktop when it's running Windows XP.
-I set up a share in Samba on the netbook while running Ubuntu 10.04. The share is visible on the network from the Windows 7 machine, but I couldn't access it. I was asked for a username and login. I had no idea which one to use, but no combination I tried worked. Windows kept saying it couldn't find a "path" to the share.
-In the Nautilus "network" item on the netbook, I can see the shares on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. But I can't access them. Again, I get asked for a username and password, and I have no idea what to enter, or where the username and password can be set.
-I set up a share on the Windows 7 machine, allowing read-only access to everyone. But it doesn't show up on either of the Ubuntu machines, at all, in the "Penguin" workgroup. So I'm not sure how to proceed.
Do I need to explicitly configure the IPv4 settings on each machine to a static internal IP? As I stated, each machine gets a predictable address assigned by the router, so in effect the machines do have static IP addresses. However, I'm not sure that's all the same to Samba.
I'm configuring Ubuntu 10.04 x86 to work with a windows domain with multiple users.
All users need a specific network share mapped.
I am using Likewise Open to join the domain at the moment.

This works fine so long as I specify the username and password statically. Is there a way I can get it to mount using the currently logged in users credentials so that it mounts automatically?
The other issue then is how to I specify that user is allowed read and write access?
I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 in dual boot with Windows XP on my computer at work. I have a printer (HP LaserJet 3020) and I've shared it with all my coworkers, and everything's working like a charm. When a coworker wants to print here, first he has to select my shared printer on his computer and then print it. Cool! The point is... On his computer there are two network printers pointing to my PC: one for Windows and another one for Ubuntu. Now, here's the problem. Sometimes I'm logged in Windows, sometimes in Ubuntu, here. But my coworkers don't know when I'm in Windows or Ubuntu. So, if they select my Windows shared printer and I'm logged in Ubuntu, it doesn't work.
So, I'd like to know if there is a way to share my printer on Ubuntu as if it were Windows, I mean, I don't know if it's possible - that's what I want to know - but I thought maybe there could be a way to use a "single network printer link" on my coworkers' computers (instead of two distinct ones for each OS I use), so that they would select it and send their printing job to my printer, independently on which OS I'm using at the moment.
Summarizing... A coworker chooses my shared printer on his computer and send the job. Then it would be printed here anyway. It doesn't matter if I'm logged in Windows or Ubuntu.Is that possible? If so, how?
From the command shell, how do I get to a network connected drive?I do a "Connect to Server" -> "Windows share" and connect to one of my Windows XP systems. Everything is fine. But how do I get to that drive from the command line prompt so I can do terminal commands or open files programmatically (hmmm is that spelled right?) Thus far, I see no way to do it.
I'm currently using ubuntu on my laptop, and I want to access my windows 7 folders via network and file sharing...but there's this problem...
Everytime I want to connect to my Windows 7 pc, it will just prompt me a "password required for xx pc"...and keep looping on every username/password [afaik from the windows account], and I'm unable to login to it.
Even tho I've set "LmCompatibilityLevel" dword key, 1 or 2 [restarted every set] under LSA..it's still the same thing happens...
I'm able to connect to a networked Windows machine and its shares using the Places -> Network -> Windows network interface, but unable to do so using smbclient at terminal command line. I can see the shares using:
smbclient -L //server -U username
But when issuing the command:
smbclient //server/service -U username
I get:

The share name has spaces, like
lab raid root share
I use 40 to fill in the spaces. This problem must be something fairly simple if I can connect via the Places GUI but not through the command line.
I'm wondering if I can get an answer to this oneI'm pretty new to Ubuntu, been using it off and on for a few months now. Right now I'm using Lucid and I have no problem connecting to the other PC's in my house that run Windows 7, however when I try to access them it asks for a password. I disabled the password on the Windows PC, so is it possible to get into them without a pass? If so, how
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and would like to share this computer on my windows network. I understand that Samba is the way to go, but how do I configure linux with Samba so I can share files and printers? I am able to see my windows computers (vista and xp) but I am not able to see the linux computer with those machines plus I would like to change the network name of the linux machine if possible. Please any help and information will be much appreciated. Eventually I would like to server a printer from this linux machine to the other windows machines.
I cannot mount my windows share automatically with fstab and have the files be R/W. They are only mounted as read-only.I have tried several dozen commands in the fstab file with many mount points and different users. The share is on a Windows 2000 server, but NOT a domain controller.Thing is, using the Places|Connect To Server|Windows Server menu selection, it works fine. And when I use that, the share shows up on the desktop. However, in some programs I cannot see the share in the open/close dialog boxes. I can however go to /mnt/server to see them if I mount them in fstab. The files just open as "read only" that way however.Have tried... on last line of fstab mount command.....rw option, +777 option, using IP address of server, using server name.
Same result (as fstab) if I do a manual mount command, then a mount -a. Mounts Ok, just as "Read only". ex: sudo mount -t smbfs //192.168.1.xxx/sharename /media/server -o username=xxxxxx,password=xxxxxxxxThis has been the case with Ubuntu 8.04 until my current one, 9.10. Ubuntu (if you are listening) really needs to make this easier. It truly is basic network stuff that for some reason is rather difficult to do. Read only access is not actual network access and my other option (having to manually connect via the drop-down menu) each time I boot up is a pain.What is different about that "connect to server" option on the menu that makes it work? It'd be great if there was a check box there that said "remember this connection". Then all would work fine.
After latest updates on Ubuntu 9.10 desktop today - network connection to Samba share on a network drive have stopped working. I'm getting following error in Nautilus Error: Failed to mount Windows share Please select another viewer and try again.
I have had folder sharing under Samba working for several past versions of Ubuntu. I recently upgraded to 10.04 and my old shares are still working, but any new folders I attempt to share I cannot get to work, despite attempting multiple workarounds.
The Windows 7 error I get is:"Windows can't find "\MYSERVERshared_folder". The name might be misspelled."
