Networking :: Samba Setup - Windows 7 Host - CentOS Machine Using VirtualBox?

Jun 23, 2010

I am trying to set up samba in my CentOS virtual machine that is running on a Windows 7 host. I have found a tutorial in the How-Tos on this site but I'm not sure if they are exact and I'm paranoid about messing something up. The link to the tutorial is below. Is there anything that I should do different or anything that I should be aware of? Also, once this is set up, how do I transfer files between the two machines? Please note: I am very inexperienced in the IT field. [URL]...

General :: Using Samba To Share A Folder From A Guest With A Windows Host In VirtualBox

Mar 15, 2011

I would like to share a folder from a Linux Guest with a Windows host (with read and write access if possible) in VirtualBox. I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and need more information on how to proceed.

So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Samba Share Not Accessible From Windows Machine?

Feb 13, 2010

I have Linux installed on one machine with samba running and a second machine running XP. They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

I thought of firewall settings but iptables -L on Ubuntu returns an empty list even.

Networking :: Samba Shared Printer: Install The Driver In A Windows Host?

Oct 20, 2010

I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!

Networking :: Can't Ping CentOS 5.3 Machine To XP SP2 Windows Machine

Oct 31, 2009

I have two machines, one has XP service pack2, second one has CentOS 5.3 (Linux), they are connected through crossover cable. I have configured everything fine but don't know why till now can't ping!

A. Windows machine settings as follows:

IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gatway: 192.168.1.1
+ Firewall is turned OFF.

B. For Linux machine, I will list everything stored in network files, logged as [root@localhost ~]# :

1. /etc/sysconfig/network:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0
NETWORKING = yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain

2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

DEVICE="eth0"
IPADDR="192.168.1.4"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ONBOOT="yes"
BOOTPROTO="yes"

3. /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 192.168.1.4
search locadomain

4. I restarted network service using this command:

/etc/init.d/network start

everything is fine. When checking using ifconfig command. I get the following:

eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:0D:EE:19:66
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr:........

[code]....

I mean I assigned the IP: 192.168.1.4 to Linux machine (Eth0). I did everything above and can't ping till now, when pinging from windows or Linux I get a message "destination host unreachable" restarted Linux many times but same result. NETWORK CABLE is working fine I tested it.

Fedora Networking :: Setup A LAN With An FC14 Laptop - FC15 PC And A Windows Machine Running XP?

Jun 27, 2011

Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.

When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.

Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:

rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64
samba-winbind-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64
samba-swat-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64

Installation :: Use XEN Or VirtualBox To Host Windows 7 On It Or It On Windows 7?

May 17, 2010

Should I use XEN or VirtualBox to host linux on windows 7 or windows 7 on linux? Since I've read about the problems of reading/writing NTFS disks with linux usnig the Linux NTFS driver, I thought it would be better to host windows on linux. I think the problem is that you never can be sure if the linux NTFS driver is going to corrupt your disk because Microsoft does not publish the format for linux developers.

By running windows on linux, I could read and write EXT3 from windows. I think there are EXT3 drivers for windows. Then I got to thinking: If I am running Linux on Windows, am I going to be using SAMBA or the linux NTFS driver? I think I'm going to be using SAMBA to read and write the linux partitions -- correct? Are there other considerations when deciding to host linux on windows or windows on linux? I'm going to using both the linux and windows partitions for software development with java/eclipse and various databases including oracle.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Windows Permissions On Samba Share?

Apr 30, 2009

I have set up a Samba share via my CentOS 5 server (the samba share is actually a mounted filesystem, not local machine space). I have been successful in adding permissions for my windows users within the smb.conf, but have an additional need that I cannot figure out. I would like for my Windows administrators to be able to create folders and assign permissions from their machines (and their Windows GUI). Ultimately I need the folders on the Samba share to behave correctly when Windows group permissions are applied by these administrators.

When the folders are created, the "Everyone" identity cannot be deleted and sometimes "Creator Owner" or "Creater Group" show up. I have seen several threads start down this path, but haven't seen a definite answer (I may have just missed it!).

CentOS 5 Networking :: Samba Password Infinate Loop From Windows

Nov 12, 2009

I have just started a job as an IT tech, and have inherited a linux server running CEntOS 5.3 -- I have some experiance with linux, but am a little at sea. I'm using Webmin 1.490.The main use of the server is to samba share file space to windows clients, running XP.Everyone can happily connect to their home share, however the other shares have problems. One of the shares "staff" fails intermittently (to some staff members) and some of the other shares fail always.

The failure is that when a user tries to connect to the share, it pops up a username and password dialog (even if they just successfully viewed their home dir) then on entering correct details and clicking ok, the box refreshes with <domain><user name> (where braced values are replaced by literal values). If a user is connecting from outside via vpn (hosted though a different department's server) the domain is replaced by their computer name.If the password is re-entered, the same happens, in an infinite loop, and no access is ever given.When I say the staff share is intermittent, there likely is some pattern, but I haven't been able to work it out yet -- I think it may have something to do with how recently the account was set up, or physical location.

Fedora :: Installed CentOS 5 In Virtualbox But Can't Ping The Virtual Machine?

Mar 10, 2009

Running Fedora 10, I installed CentOS 5 in Virtualbox, but I can't ping the Virtual Machine...

From within CentOS, I can ping my laptop [known as the host?] but from the laptop I can't ping the CentOS Virtual Machine. I tried turning off the firewall on both too... CentOS was able to access the internet through my laptop right away without any configurations too.

Unless someone has an idea to resolve the above, I am also wondering about something else VirtualBox-related:

To see if it was possible to get around the above issue, I was going to install another CentOS virtual machine to see if I can get them to communicate both ways [if at all], but to do so, I think I have to install CentOS AGAIN on another allocated amount of hard disk space. This will take some time, so I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to just create a quick duplicate of the previous installation, if you wanted 2 different virtual installations of the same OS.

The virtual machine 'Windows 7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908). The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. i have installed the DKMS package, but when i try to run the command stated in the error message, i get another error message in the terminal:

i have to install the driver that is specified (vboxdrv) but i do not know where to find it.
